Objective1

• Hands-on Understanding of the Compass School Concept & Methods

The Compass Schools program translates the four cardinal compass directions

into the specific working areas of school life, including management,

integration, governance, finances and fundraising, resource management and

consumption, working and learning environment, personal health,

environmental and cultural awareness and action, networking and

participation, and curriculum design and pedagogical development. The ATA

workshop will clearly explain what a Compass School is, and then you will

have the opportunity to experiment with the tools and approaches to see how

they work, as well as provide feedback on improving our idea.

Objective2

• Applying Systems Thinking to School Transformation Whether the school is public or private, urban or rural, large or small, there are three nested systems at play – the classroom, the school and the community; all of which interact in ways that are sometimes hard to see but that shape the priorities and needs of people at all levels. In these workshops, we will explore how to apply systems theory and systems thinking approaches to efforts that foster schools to learn and transform at all three levels.

• Understanding the latest news and trends affecting our profession’s ability to sustain us

SCHOOL-WIDE ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE

• Teachers must establish an individual classroom management procedure, inform students and parents, and enforce the procedures prior to writing a referral on a student. These management procedures should include strategies and consequences for inattentive behavior, a lack of classroom participation, and/or academic focus that interferes with the learning environment.

Page 11: AFRICAN TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION ATA New Perspectives in Education africanteachersassociation

• Teachers should cooperatively develop strategies that effectively curtail inappropriate behavior and classroom distraction, provide a structure to promote communication between teacher, parent and student, that allows the teacher to

• retain their authority over their class.

TEACHER DISCIPLINE PROTOCAL

• Teachers are asked to adhere to the following protocol when considering disciplinary action.

• Minor classroom disruptions and classroom management problems should be handled by the teacher following their five step “Behavior Management Plan”. When the teachers five step Behavior Management System has been exhausted do not send students to the office instead complete an online discipline referral and the students(s) will be dealt with by an administrator as soon as possible. Check with administration if you have not received a copy of the completed referral within three days.

• If a serious classroom problem arises (fighting, refusing to follow teachers instructions or disrespect to a teacher) call the office or securities and ask for an administrator who will come to your classroom for the student(s). Do not send students to the office.
