Voorwoord
Voorwoord afstudeerbundel Civil Engineering en
Applied Earth Sciences
februari 2006
MSc-opleiding Applied Earth Sciences loopt hier-
bij voorop. Deze opleiding biedt samen met een
aantal Europese universiteiten de ‘European Mineral
Engineering Course’ en de ‘European Mining Course’
aan als varianten binnen de Delftse opleiding. Deze
vorm van internationalisering wordt verder ontwik-
keld op het gebied van Applied Geophysics. Met
ingang van september 2006 bieden drie Europese
technische topuniversiteiten: ETH Zurich, RWTH
Aachen en TU Delft een gezamenlijke MSc-opleiding
Applied Geophysics aan.
Voorwoord 9
Ook de drie Nederlandse technische universiteiten
hebben vergevorderde plannen voor gezamenlijke
MSc-opleidingen. Op het terrein van civiele techniek
kan hier de MSc-opleiding Construction Management
and Engineering worden genoemd, die in 2007 van
start gaat. Van Delftse zijde is naast de faculteit
Civiele Techniek en Geowetenschappen ook de
faculteit Technische Bestuurskunde en Management
bij dit initiatief betrokken.
De universiteit, de faculteit, onderhoudt veel rela-
ties.

brugdek berekend.
De dynamische analyses zijn in eerste instantie
uitgevoerd met de dynamische voetgangersbelasting
uit Eurocode 5. Aangezien hiermee waarschijnlijk
onrealistisch hoge versnellingen worden berekend,
is een alternatieve methode ontwikkeld, waarmee
de versnellingen lager uitvallen. Nader onderzocht

mingen, waardoor relatief grote mo-menten optre-
den.

Bouw - Voorgespannen Spoorbrug in Hogere Sterkte Beton
toegepast. Dit, omdat stalen bruggen over het alge-
meen een kleinere constructiehoogte bezitten dan
bruggen uitgevoerd in conventioneel beton.
tiehoogte. Dit maakt hogere sterkte beton wellicht
tot een goed alternatief voor stalen bruggen.
Een betonnen brug is, mits goed ontworpen, zeer
duurzaam.
In
constructie gecontroleerd.
Voor het genoemde referentieproject zijn 4 oplos-
singen aangedragen: in B65, in B115 zonder staalve-

In één
van deze modellen wordt de wapeningscorrosie
– één van de belangrijkste aantastingmechanis-
men van beton – beschreven.
method).
(CEM I).
meters noodzakelijk.

During the last decade, major changes have taken
place in the offshore industry. New oil and gas
fields have been discovered in ever increasing water
depths (even more than 3000 m) and in more severe
environments. Risers (vertical pipelines which trans-
port oil and gas to offshore platforms) may vibrate
due to the vortices, which occur due to flows around
the risers. These riser vibrations, which are called
Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) may damage the
riser and limit its fatigue life.
Existing tools can predict VIV for short risers, based
on modal analysis and the mode superposition
method. These tools can only predict single-mode
vibrations.
To study the possible occurrence of multi-mode
vibrations in long risers, VIV can best be modelled
in the time domain. In order to analyze the VIV-
behaviour of deep-water risers a phenomenological
model is used in which a ‘van der Pol’-type wake
oscillator for the lift force is coupled to the structure
motion. This resulted in a system of two coupled
partial differential equations, which is analysed in
the time domain, using a central explicit finite diffe-
rence method. A program, written in FORTRAN,
is used to predict the riser behaviour for different
current profiles. The riser behaviour is analyzed for
constant current profiles (current velocity does not
vary along the riser) and for sheared current profiles
(current velocity varies along the riser).
In case of a constant current profile at nearly all
cross-sections the wake oscillation synchronizes
with the riser oscillation at a frequency close to one
of the natural frequencies of the riser.
In case of sheared current profiles the spectra of
oscillations contain several different frequencies:
the local Strouhal frequency and the frequencies
of incoming waves. These multi-mode vibrations
will make the riser response look either chaotic (for
profiles with significant variation in flow velocity)
or quasi-periodic (for profiles with little variation in
flow velocity this multi-mode behaviour can be very
Phenomenological Modelling of Vortex-Induced Vibrations of Deep-Water Risers
much like the single-mode behaviour for constant
current profiles).
The results outlined above were obtained employ-
ing a wake oscillator model that contains empirical
parameters well suited for single-mode vibrations.
Numerical simulations in the time domain with this
model indicated the existence of multi-mode oscil-
lations of the deep-water risers. This means that the
wake oscillator model should be improved to make
it suitable for modelling the multi-frequency oscil-
lations. To enable this improvement experimental
research focused on multi-frequency oscillations is
strongly needed.

BOUW - Minimum wapening in gewapend betonnen platen
In de hedendaagse utiliteits- en woningbouw
speelt de constructieve functie van de schei-
dende elementen vaak een ondergeschikte rol en
worden de dimensies bepaald volgens de geldende
geluidseisen. De betonnen elementen waarbij de
maatvoering op deze wijze is vastgelegd, worden
in de praktijk doorgaans van praktische wapening
voorzien. Voor vloeren is dat minimumwapening.
De interpretatie van minimumwapening zoals in de
verschillende nationale normen opgenomen, is niet
eenduidig.
doorsnede.
matisch in Figuur 2 weergegeven.
men.

Bouw - IJmeerverbinding
Alternatief staalbeton-dek in tuibrug
IJburg.
brug.

Joint behaviour in microtunnelling processes
Theoretical analysis of the elastic joint behaviour of
curved jacked concrete pipeline in homogeneous soil
The jacking force transmission from one pipe to
another trough joint zone between the pipes is
related to the angle of curvature and the compres-
sive zone of the joint between pipe elements. If the
opening exceeds the maximum permissible joint gap
width, leakage occurs and the structure will fail. The
emphasis in this paper is on the joint zone of the
concrete pipeline in horizontal position
(h-constant) during curved jacking process. To
examine joint behavior it develops a two-dimen-
sional model based on the static equilibrium state
incorporating the affecting forces i.e. jacking force,
front resistance force against TBM, soil reaction
force, friction force between the soil and pipeline
and joint compressive stress and strain.

Conclusion
1. Rubber is a good joint material.
2. Soil reaction force depends directly on curvature
angle and joint deflection.
3. Z increases due to increasing of Pj, Fs, joint
deflection is constant and decreases due to
regular increasing of joint deflection.
4. Gap width decreases due to constant joint
deflection or increasing of the pipe length.
5. Gap width is varying due to irregular increasing
of joint deflection and increases due to regular
increasing of joint deflection

Innovation of stress and damage reduction in bored tunnels during construction, based on a shield equilibrium model
lay-out te bestuderen. Een gunstige combinatie van
lay-out veranderingen levert een reductie van de
vijzelkracht van maar liefst 34%. Minder schade zal
dus optreden.
wand.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for elastoplasticity
Commercial finite element packages using the
traditional continuous Galerkin (cG) finite element
method are capable of predicting the elastoplastic
behaviour of structures. However, there are certain
cases where traditional methods face difficulties.
For consistent implementation of thin Poisson-
Kirchhoff plates, the shape functions require C1
continuity. This is however met by few, if any, plate
elements and the results obtained for these are not
completely satisfactory.
An alternative is to use continuous C0 elements
and impose the continuity of slope weakly. This
procedure is known as the discontinuous Galerkin
(dG) finite element method. Unlike the traditional
cG method, dG methods do not require continuity
of the approximate functions across the interele-
ment boundary. Instead, in this case, C1 continuity
is enforced weakly by adding a term that penali-
zes the jump in the normal derivative. This weakly
enforcement of continuity in displacement or normal
derivative makes it possible to use spaces of discon-
tinuous piecewise polynomials to solve numerous
problems. This makes dG methods ideally suitable
for h- and p-adaptivity, as well as for dealing with
non-matching grids.
In this master’s thesis two different discontinuous
Galerkin methods for elastoplastic problems are
analyzed. These are the interior penalty (IP) method
and the non-symmetric (NS) discontinuous Galerkin
method. However the existing literature is based
exclusively in a linear-elastic behaviour. Little has
been done assuming plastic behavior for the diffe-
rent dG methods, making it difficult to exploit the
explained beneficial properties of the more general
elastoplastic case.
The work is therefore divided in mainly two parts.
First, following the existing literature, an analysis
of the behavior and properties in the elastic case
of the two above-mentioned dG methods is done.
In the second part of this thesis the formulation for
the elastoplastic case is done for both the interior
penalty method and the non-symmetric method.
Due to a simpler formulation of the non-symmetric
method the extension to the elastoplastic case is
straightforward, resulting in a method with similar
properties if compared to the elastic case. However,
the extension of the interior penalty method beco-
mes ambiguous, and can only be carried out if some
simplifications are assumed.

keerd.

bestuurlijke centrum
van de gemeente
Gouda in de histo-
rische binnenstad
belast. Hierdoor zullen ankers of stempels nodig
In plaats

wijken
Omdat op dit moment de na-oorlogse
wijken voor een groot deel gesloopt
worden om de uiteenlopende proble-
men in deze wijken aan te pakken,
dreigt karakteristieke woningbouw
verloren te gaan: het erfgoed uit de
Wederopbouwperiode.
Bouwbesluit.
Door de gevelopbouw zonder spouw of isolatie
wordt de vereiste warmteweerstand (Rc) van 2,5
m2•K/W niet gehaald. Daarnaast treedt er al bij een
lage relatieve luchtvochtigheid, wanneer de buiten-
temperaturen in de winter richting vriespunt gaan,
condensatie op (voornamelijk langs de
dakranden op de bovenste etages).
Door middel van een computerbere-
kening (Trisco) kan de invloed van
verschillende aanpassingen aan de
constructie onderzocht worden. Hieruit
blijkt ook de negatieve invloed van
de betonnen dakrand, die koud op de
dakplaat rust. Door middel van een
gevelisolatie, waarin steenstrips in

Koelkast of broeikas?
Glasoverkapte
ruimten worden
al vele eeuwen
toegepast. Al in
de eerste eeuw
na Christus maak-
ten de Romeinen
gebruik van
dunne, gesne-
den lagen talk
om daarmee
primitieve plan-
tenkassen te
maken. Vanaf de
16e eeuw werden in Nederland en Italië de eerste
(eenvoudige) plantenkassen ontwikkeld. Vanaf 1820
stratificatie/temperatuurgradiënt in natuurlijk geven-
tileerde glasoverkapte ruimten nader onderzocht.
natuurlijk geventileerde grote glasoverkapte ruim-
ten.

Deployable Structures based on Mechanisms in NatureA geometrical and structural analysis of technical folding patterns based on natural folding patterns.
In the world of architectural design there is a
tendency to implement movable parts in buildings
and structures. Motion adds the fourth dimension,
time, to a structure. Designers are conscious of
the fact that motion in general and deployability
in particular, can intensify the use of a building or
structure, because it can be adapted to changing
circumstances.
Traditionally, structural engineers are not used
to working with deployable structures. This gap
between the wishes of the architect and the capabi-
lities of the engineer has to be bridged.
A historical overview of man-made deployable struc-
tures is provided. Amongst others, the work of Da
Vinci, Otto, Hoberman and Calatrava is discussed.
Nature provides many examples of optimized struc-
tures and can serve as a starting point for structural
design and engineering. To place the natural deploy-
able structures in their context, a study at natural
structures in general has been worked out.
Natural deployable structures, like the muscular
systems of the human hand and the unrolling prob-
oscis of the butterfly, can function as a source of
inspiration for structural engineers.
The natural folding mechanisms, which can be found
in unfolding beetle wings and budding beech leaves
are investigated. A mathematical model is developed
which describes the relation between the geometry
and the kinematical behaviour of a folding pattern.
With this model three quantities are investigated;
Speed of Deployment; Compactness of the Folded
Structure and the Required Energy for the Folding
Process. A paradoxical relation between the first
two quantities has been derived. Further more the
structural behaviour of symmetrical and asymme-
trical folding patterns which unfold into a pyramid
shape has been discussed.
With an associative, parametric design tool,
GenerativeComponents, a folding module has been
developed. In this module the derived geometric
relations are embedded. With this module, or so
called `feature’, multiple-knots systems can be
generated. A model has been developed to deter-
mine the possible configurations of the two fold-
types (concave and convex) for three knots folding
systems. These multiple-knots systems are coupled
mechanisms. The kinematical behaviour of the indi-
vidual modules interacts with each other. In order
to realize a multiple-knots system which can fold
without deformation the kinematical behaviour of
the interacting modules needs to coincide. Or in
other words; in a three knots folding system, the
kinematical behaviour of two of the knots determine
the behaviour, and thus the geometry of the third
knot. This relation is solved numeric. Geometries
which deviate from the calculated geometry, needs
to deform in order to (un)fold. This required defor-
mation could serve as a stabilizing element in
technical folding patterns. In natural wing folding
systems this effect can be observed.

opgedeeld in verschillende onderdelen, namelijk
de overspanning, de overdrachtsconstructie en de
steunpunten. Voor elke onderdeel is een alternatie-
venstudie uitgevoerd. Daarnaast is een gevel en het
vloersysteem gekozen. Ten behoeve van de bouw
moet de constructie worden opgedeeld in stukken.
Het resultaat is een stalen draagconstructie, die
met tijdelijke ondersteuningen en het gebruik van
mobiele kranen gebouwd kan worden en daarmee
voldoet aan de randvoorwaarden vanuit de locatie.

Constructief glazen element
Tevens zullen
microscheuren in het glas worden
dichtgedrukt, waardoor de duur-
zaamheid van het constructieve
glazen element wordt vergroot.
Het afstudeeronderzoek bestaat uit een theoreti-
sche studie naar glas, het toepassingsgebied en
de mogelijke vormen van voorgespannen glazen
elementen. De nadruk van het onderzoek ligt bij
de bezwijkveiligheid van de glazen constructieve
elementen en de inleiding van de voorspanning.
Om een voorgespannen glazen element te maken
dient de voor-
spanning in
het element te
kunnen worden
geleid. Aangezien
onderzocht.
Dit onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat een veilig
bezwijktraject is toegevoegd aan het constructief
glazen element door het toepassen van voorspan-
ning middels stalen kabels. Het bezwijktraject
bestaat uit een waarschuwingsmoment en een rest-
draagvermogen, waardoor het draagvermogen van
het element wordt verhoogd.

Constructief Ontwerp ‘VandenEnde Musicaltheater’
In samenwerking
stabiliteitsconstructie. Door deze ingreep kunnen
ondersteunende kolommen in de entreeruimte van
het theater achterwege blijven en ontstaat een
grote kolomvrije entree, wat algemeen als positief
wordt ervaren. Voorwaarde voor dit concept is de
aanwezigheid van zware wanden (a.g.v. akoestische
eisen) die de, voornamelijk permanente belasting,
kunnen opvangen.

“Bridge to China”
How can Dutch principals collaborate with Chinese contractors in the realization of a construction project?
Research in the management decision-making
process between Dutch commercial principals and
Chinese contractors in the realization of an indu-
strial construction project
“A big and very hungry dragon”, “Controlling the
beast”, “China, the world’s 4th largest economy?”
these slogans are just a few of the many articles
appearing daily. The last few years, enormous chan-
ges have taken place in the Chinese economy. Not
only today, but in the coming years, or even decen-
nia, China will be one of the fastest growing econo-
mies in the world. A lot of companies are trying to
establish themselves in this country. In connection
with China’s joining of the WTO, it has become one
of the largest and most powerful economic areas.
More and more often Dutch commercial companies
are looking for opportunities to move or expand
their production plants into China.
Each industrial construction project can be charac-
terised by a certain building contract form, such as:
Turnkey or Design & Build. Within each form, one of
the major aspects described are the relationships
between the involved parties. What is the case,
when a project is to be realised in China?
In other words: how can Dutch commercial princi-
pals logically and structurally establish a building
contract form with a Chinese contractor? An
answer to this question is also the objective of this
thesis:
“To develop a systematic and logical decision-
support tool for a Dutch commercial principal in
order to arrive at a collaborative group and building
contract form concerning business, cultural and
project related issues”
To be able to realize this objective, three fundamen-
tal survey areas have to be considered in parallel.
First of all, a detailed survey in relation to building
contract forms is taken into account, both existing
forms as well as developments in the construction
sector. Second, a general understanding of Chinese
cultural issues is a necessity. in the third place,
important management decision-making criteria,
business related as well as project related, have to
be defined. All three of them combined, result in
two conceptual approaches which can be transla-
ted into two practical support tools. The first tool
concerns the project related aspects, while the
second one considers the business and cultural
issues.
Both supporting tools, Quick TEB Toolkit and Quick
TEB ROAT, are literally tools to support Dutch prin-
cipals in order to arrive at a collaborative form
with their future Chinese partners or contractors.
Personal and business relationships are issues which
can not be strictly modelled, a certain common
sense is a must in these kinds of management deci-
sion-making.

Lightness in glass constructions
afwezig. Tegelijkertijd is
het een sterk materiaal:
onder laboratoriumomstan-
digheden hebben perfecte
glasvezels zelfs een hogere
treksterkte dan het heden-
daagse constructiestaal.
Frans Kooijman. In dit afstudeeron-
derzoek is een constructief ontwerp
hiervoor gemaakt, waarbij tevens de
bouwfysische aspecten zijn bekeken.
De geometrie is bepaald
aan de hand van een parametrisch
model, dat gevormd is naar een klei-
model.
Om de beoogde transparantie van
het ontwerp te kunnen behalen is
er een draagconstructie bedacht
van glazen voorgespannen buizen.
Met behulp van een nieuw ontwik-
keld knooppunt kunnen deze staven
met een bepaalde vrijheidsgraad
aan elkaar worden gekoppeld, zodat
een schaalconstructie gevormd
wordt. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om de BLOB-vorm
te volgen met één standaard gefabriceerd knoop-
punt.
buis bezwijkt.

van het kantoorgebouw De Haagsche Zwaan
van start. Dit kantoorgebouw ligt vlak naast
de Utrechtse Baan in de gemeente Den Haag.
Aangezien het kantoorgebouw in binnenstedelijk
gebied is gesitueerd, zal de omgeving beslissende
randvoorwaarden stellen aan het ontwerp en de
uitvoering, zoals:
bruikers
draagconstructie blijkt
vooral de horizontale
stabiliteit van belang. De
langwerpige plattegrond
van het gebouw en een
relatieve slappe kern in
de richting van de groot-
ste windbelasting zorgen
voor te weinig horizontale
stijfheid. Toepassing van
een vakwerk in de twee
kopgevels blijkt de meest
efficiënte en stijve stabi-
liteitsconstructie op te
leveren.

Openluchttheater Birkhoven in Amersfoort kampt
weer.

Mijnbouwkunde. Dit gebouw is
gelegen aan de Mijnbouwstraat
en is sinds 1912 in gebruik als
faculteitsgebouw.
Voor het gebouw is een bouw-
technisch en een bouwhisto-
risch onderzoek gedaan.
uitvoeren.

Large-scale coherent structures in turbulent shallow fl ows
Coherent structures, or eddies, are an often occur-
ring phenomenon in civil engineering practice.
Coherent structures in shallow flows are generated
by topographical forcing, internal transverse shear
instabilities, or secondary instabilities of the base
flow, and are therefore often seen in rivers, seas
and oceans.
This thesis particularly focused on the third cate-
gory: the interaction between, on the one hand,
the bottom and, on the other hand, the formation
and physical behaviour of coherent structures. To
that end, numerical simulations are carried out on
shallow flows. The subject is divided into three
parts: firstly, spectral analysis of a shallow channel
flow by means of Large Eddy Simulations. The thus
obtained information gives insight in the structure
of the eddies and can be used in two-dimensional
models. Secondly, investigation of the influence
of disturbances (on different length-scales) on a
(quasi-2D-flow in general, and investigation of the
role of the bottom within this context. Thirdly, appli-
cation of the obtained information in a 2D-model.
A well performing 2D-model would be a significant
improvement, as 3D-models are much more compu-
tationally expensive.
In order to resolve the properties of the flow,
a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used: a finite
difference model that resolves the full 3D Navier-
Stokes equations with a subgrid-scale model for the
small-scale motions. Furthermore, a 2D Transient
Reynolds Averaged Numerical Simulation (TRANS)
is used and adapted with a kinematic simulation to
represent the large-scale motions in the flow, using
the energy-density spectra of a channel flow. Full
3D-LES computations have been carried out on a
channel flow at three different Reynolds-numbers. A
huge database has been obtained that can be used
to represent the large-scale motions in two-dimensi-
onal simulations.
Furthermore, several similarities in the shape of the
energy-density spectra have been observed in the
large-scale part of the spectra, for each Reynolds-
number. 2D-LES and 3D-LES computations are
used to investigate the influence of disturbances on
several length-scales. To that end, the development
of the eddies has been measured in time (using a
vorticity checkerboard) and in space (using a chan-
nel flow with obstacles at the inflow boundary).
It has been found that disturbances on a supra-
depth length-scale are most efficient with regard to
the, for two-dimensional turbulence characteristic,
shift to the larger length-scales and therefore most
important for the conservation of turbulent kinetic
energy. The large-scale motions have been repre-
sented in a 2D-TRANS model by means of a kine-
matic simulation. The data from this 2D-model have
been compared with a full 3D-LES computation,
both applied on a grid-flow. It has been observed
that the addition of spectral information make the
2D-model perform reasonably well.

The evaluation of piping at existing fl ood defence constructions
Constructions in the primary flood defence in the
Netherlands have to be checked each five years
under a statutory obligation. The problem here-
with is that some structures cannot be checked
very well because there is a lack of information. An
important subject for which a proper and full set of
information is often lacking, is the failure mecha-
nism piping. Piping is the mechanism by which a
continuing erosion channel originates under or next
to a construction, as a result of a groundwater flow.
This erosion can lead to improper functioning of the
flood defence construction in particular and with
that of the whole defence in general.
For a proper evaluation of piping more and better
information is needed, which can be obtained by
measurement. In the Msc thesis, which is carried
out by ‘the Bouwdienst van Rijkswaterstaat (RWS)’
(governmental engineering agency), possible
measuring methods are evaluated. In a case study
the methods gauge tube and radar/tracer have been
employed at the ‘Zuidersluis’, a lock close to the
city of Almere in the Netherlands. The safety on the
failure mechanism piping is analysed with help of
the measuring results.
At first instance the ‘Zuidersluis’ did not pass the
piping test. With the results of the investigation the
lock could be approved of. The followed procedure
is settled in a testing model, which can be used as a
basis for future (practical) tests on piping at flood
defence constructions in general. The emphasis at
this test should be on a three-dimensional approach
of the failure mechanism piping.

Erosion resistance of a grass top layer against wave overtopping

streerd in 2003. De oorzaak van de extreem hoge
en lage waterstanden wordt gelegd bij klimaat-
verandering.
baarheid.
perioden incidenteel volcontinue varen, informatie-
management, aanpassen van de karakteristieken
van schepen, kanaliseren van de waterweg, reten-
tiegebieden aanleggen, kribben aanpassen, bagge-
ren, debiet reguleren en gebruik van bestaande
opslagruimte.
over actuele waterstanden, meerdaagse voorspel-
lingen van waterstanden en goederenvervoer, zodat
beter geanticipeerd kan worden op extreem lage
waterstanden.

Admittance policy tidal bound ships
Design of a probabilistic computer model for determination of channel transit risks to a seaport.
Ships that can only reach the seaport during high
tide and acceptable conditions are named tidal
bound ships. The conditions are acceptable if the
risk of a bottom touch during the entrance channel
transit is lower than the allowed risk. The proba-
bility that a ship touches the bottom depends on:
the ship characteristics, wave climate, bathymetry,
meteorological conditions and tidal data. To take the
uncertainties around the predicted conditions into
account, an existing model uses numerical integra-
tion. For runtime reduction, relatively large integra-
tion steps are chosen. Numerical inaccuracy is the
consequence. In this master thesis it is investigated
if the Monte Carlo method could be used as
alternative to calculate the inaccessibility percen-
tage. This is the percentage of tides during which
no period is available for a tidal bound ship to sail to
the port.
A schematisation of the probabilistic computer
model is given below.

Side channels to improve navigability on the river Waal
The project concerned the possibility of reducing
the point bar in the inner bend of a river by a well-
designed side channel, so as to increase the effec-
tive navigable width. The study was performed for
two bends in the river Waal, just downstream of
the Pannerdensche Kop bifurcation. Via theoretical
analysis and numerical modelling with Delft3D, it
led to the conclusion that under normal conditions
the point bar can be reduced, indeed, but that the
effect is more than annihilated during periods of
high water.

Design of a cooling water outfall system
In 1998 the World Bank Group issued a guideline
on thermal effluents that was stricter than previous
legislation and changed the design of cooling water
outfall systems. Before issue of the guideline cooling
water would be discharged at the shore in most
cases, after issue the cooling water is discharged
off-shore at the sea bottom to increase mixing
with the receiving water to be able to meet with
the guideline. An additional function of the cooling
water outfall system is to keep a minimum required
back pressure level (BPL) on the upstream cooling
water system, to prevent low pressures in the plant
cooling water system (CWS).
At Delta Marine Consultants (DMC) two cases of
outfall systems that were designed and built after
the issue of the guideline are known. They consist
of an onshore weir box, an off-shore diffuser and a
pipeline connecting both. Both outfall systems expe-
rience problems with dynamic response of the flow
in the outfall system to changes in discharge in the
CWS and experience large amounts of air entrain-
ment in the weir box.
The objective of this research is to develop an opti-
mal design for an outfall system of a once-through
cooling water system that handles possible air
entrainment adequately and accounts for dynamic
flow situations. The design will be applied on one of
the cases, referred to as Case 1.
A literature study was conducted. It was found that
accurate scaling of hydraulic structures with air-
water flow is not possible. It was also found that
the rise velocity of air bubbles in seawater is signifi-
cantly lower than in fresh water. Also air in pipelines
can accumulate in large air pockets that cause an
extra energy loss. In addition large air pocket can
blow back or blow out and cause large pressure
fluctuations and structural damage.
The air entrainment in the weir box of Case 1
has been calculated at 10% of the maximum CW
discharge. A dynamic flow model was made to simu-
late an overflow of the weir box that occurred at
start-up. No overflow occurred in the simulations, it
is concluded that the entrained air affects the dyna-
mic flow and the dynamic flow model is therefore
not valid.
Several concept designs for outfall systems were
generated. A comparison on cost and feasibility was
done, the concept with a vortex flow drop shaft
came out as most favorable.
A design based on the vortex flow drop shaft
concept was made for Case 1. The design consists
of an onshore vortex drop shaft, an onshore buffer,
an outfall pipeline and a diffuser. The vortex drop
shaft maintains the BPL and effectively detrains
entrained air before it can be transported down-
stream. It consists of an inlet pipe, a circular inlet,
a vortex flow drop shaft and a supporting struc-
ture. The second onshore structure is a buffer that
prevents air suction into the outfall pipeline in case
of an abrupt stop of the discharge in the CWS.
The construction of the onshore structures has been
assessed. It was concluded that construction is
feasible.

Nourishment Behaviour Delray Beach
Possible mechanisms for local anomalous behaviour
Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Delray Beach is located
in the Southeast of Florida in the United States
of America. Ever since 1973 the beach is perio-
dically nourished to restore the eroded shoreline
and create an enjoyable beach for tourists and
Floridians. Sediment used for these nourishments
was dredged just offshore of Delray Beach creating
borrow pits of various size. These man-induced
bathymetric features influence the nourishment
behaviour of Delray Beach, contrary to natural
features as the reef. The nourishment behaviour
is furthermore subject to the event-driven wave
climate and the altering shoreline orientation. This
altering is caused by three phenomena. (1) The
influence of the borrow pits on the nearshore wave
climate. (2) The event-driven wave climate common
in Southeast Florida. And (3) the alongshore shape
of the placed fill, which causes different adjust-
ments of the nourishment.
The data analysis confirmed the existence and
location of these erosional hot spot. Delft3D was
used to further analyze the behaviour of Delray
Beach in three phases: (1) a wave analysis, (2) a
hydrodynamic flow analysis and (3) a morphologic
analysis. The wave analysis showed that especially
the oldest borrow pits (dredged in 1973 and 1978)
are of large influence on the nearshore wave climate
causing refraction, while the effect of the local
depression in offshore reef was negligible. In fact
the complete reef had no noticeable influence. The
hydrodynamic flow analysis showed that the diffe-
rences in wave height cause variation in alongshore
current velocity. These variations are directly rela-
ted to differences in wave set-up and the local wave
angle. Other alongshore variations of the currents
were attributed to a varying shoreline orientation.
The morphologic analysis showed that the effect of
borrow pits is large (although probably over esti-
mated as diffraction was not taken into account)
and may cause bar forming at the leeward side of
the borrow pits. The shoreline orientation proved
to be a cause of variation in sediment transport not
only near the erosional hot spot, but over the entire
length of the fill.
The central hypothesis that bathymetric features
control the locations of erosional hot spots was not
disproved. But it was recommended that a serious
effort should be made to better understand the
effects of the borrow pits.

Probabilistic analysis of typhoon induced hydraulic boundary conditions for Suo-nada Bay, JapanIntroduction and objective
The 18th typhoon in the year 1999 resulted in the
flooding of a number of areas and was the motive
to review the current design of the Japanese coas-
tal defence system. The current design of the
coastal defence system is based on a deterministic
approach. The objective of the research is to obtain
the marginal and joint probability distributions of
the hydraulic variables based on the joint occur-
rence of the tidal water level, the typhoon induced
storm surge level and the typhoon induced wave
characteristics.
Approach
Extrapolating the observed data and their correla-
tions into regions of low probability of occurrence
is done based on a method that combines physics
and statistics. A Monte Carlo simulation is used in
this research and therefore relevant physical pheno-
mena are described with simple analytical formulae
instead of numerical models because of the increase
in calculation time.
Relevant physical phenomena and their models
High water levels are the result of pressure set-
up, wind set-up and the tidal water level. The
locally wind-generated waves are important during
a typhoon event. Swell is not taken into account
separately. Models for these physical phenomena
are combined in a total model and applied in deter-
ministic and probabilistic analyses of typhoons. The
maximum computed values of the storm surge, the
wave height and the wave period models are cali-
brated with observations for a case site in Suo-nada
Bay. Validation of the models to obtain an objective
insight in the uncertainties has not been done due
to the small amount of data available.
Probabilistic analysis of hydraulic boundary
conditions
The probabilistic analysis is done with the same
model as derived for the deterministic calibration,
only now statistical input distributions for typhoon
characteristics and the distribution of the tidal
water level are used as input variables instead of
deterministic values. The deterministic geometry
and bathymetry of the bay are also used in the
probabilistic analysis. Over 6000 typhoons and their
induced hydraulic variables are the result of simula-
ting a period of 10000 years. The marginal and joint
probability density functions of the hydraulic vari-
ables are derived from the simulated dataset and
implemented in the design of a flood defence.
Conclusions
The analysis of the probability density functions of
the hydraulic variables with a limited amount of data
available is possible with a method that combines
statistics and physical relations. The deterministic
model seems to hindcast the maxima of hydraulic
variables induced by historical typhoons reasonably.
The probability density functions have been statis-
tically validated and seem to be in line with obser-
vations. The dependence structure of the hydraulic
variables should be included in the assessment
of failure probability of failure modes in the flood
defence design.

Compensation Grouting Experiments in Sand

meters long metro line tunnel bored underground
through the historical city centre of Amsterdam.
The Tunnel Bore Machine (TBM) will initiate unac-

grouting is a technique where from a vertical shaft
horizontal injection pipes will be brought into the

ding. A pump will inject the soil with grout (water
cement mixture) through injection points.

geometry and the propagation of a grout fracture
in sand can be examined. An analytical model has
been made in a previous research to describe the
propagation and stagnation of a fracture. The expe-
riments can validate this model.
A set-up of an experiment was made, where by
means of grout injection the geometry and the
propagation of a grout fracture in sand can be
examined. Adjustments to the grout mixture were
made to improve the behavior of the grout injection
to create more of an actual fracture. The geometri-
cal outline of the fracture was examined by exca-
vation, which increased the understanding of the
compensation grouting technique.
The compensation grouting laboratory experiments
in sand have not given the expected outcomes as
predicted by the model. Fortunately, a lot of experi-
mental data is generated which can support further
research.

Humplike nourishing of the shoreface
A study on more effi cient nourishing of the shoreface
Evaluations of shoreface nourishments executed
in the past show that the feeding function of bar
nourishing at the shoreface could be improved by
applying smart designs of the nourishment. This
study analyses a method of humplike nourishing of
the shoreface. Nourishment of the shoreface causes
waves breaking further offshore. Earlier dissipation
of energy is compensated by set-up of the water
level and variations forming horizontal circulations
leading to an increased onshore sediment transport
at the tips of the artificial bar. On more humplike
nourishments this effect of horizontal circulation
cells at the crest of the bar is expected to be used
more efficiently as more sediment is expected to
move onshore per nourished amount of sand
(Figure 1).
Figure 1: Processes causing more efficient transport on
humplike shoreface nourishments
The simulation suite Delft3D is applied to model the
different processes. The model applied is a simpli-
fied schematisation for the Dutch coast without
the complexity of natural bars. Only the effects of
the nourishment iFtself are analysed. The various
scenarios are modelled under exposure to constant
wave fields with constant water levels. The hydro-
dynamic conditions represent a moderate storm and
show behaviour of humplike nourishing in a realistic
way. All modelling has been executed with a depth
averaged area model (2DH).
Humplike nourishing indeed results in more onshore
transport per nourished amount of sand, a clear
optimum is found for a hump length of 200 meter
with gap width of 300-500 meter. For moderate
storm conditions with incident wave angle of 45
degrees with the shoreline, humplike nourishing
shows to be 1,75 times more efficient. For more
perpendicular waves this value increases to 3 times
the efficiency of the original bar nourishing.
For further study it is recommended to apply an
existing bottom schematisation and boundary
conditions. In this way transport processes can be
described more precise and the true efficiency on
the longer term can be determined together with a
more detailed analysis on the onshore processes,
sedimentation and
erosion. Together
with this follow-up
study, execution
of a pilot project is
recommended in
combination with
high resolution
monitoring of its
behaviour.

The Irrigation System as an Open System; Proyecto Rio Dulce and the Rio Dulce Basin
To solve the growing gap in water supplies occurring
in the world today water managers and planners
apply non-structural measures such as increasing
the efficiency of needs and allocation in order to
improve the productivity of the available water.
This mode of thinking extends itself to the irriga-
tion system, which is regarded as the largest water
user in the basin. Increasing the efficiency of an
irrigation system, however, may not have the inten-
ded effect namely making more water available for
other users in the river basin. Allen, Willardson and
Frederiksen explain in the article “Water use defini-
tion and their use for assessing the impacts of water
conservation”, that taking measures to increase
the efficiency comes from thinking of the irrigation
system as a closed system, thus isolated from its
surroundings when in fact it is not. The subject
of this rapport is the irrigation system as an open
system, thus understanding the irrigation system as
a part of its surrounding. A great emphasis is put on
the interactions between the irrigation system and
the river basin and an attempt is made to quantify
the flows between them. To this end a waterba-
lance is used. The processes of the waterbalance
were organized into fractions according to their
destiny, thus atmosphere, surface or subsurface.
This approach was applied to an irrigation system
in Santiago del Estero, Argentina: the Proyecto Rio
Dulce.

Jetgrouten
kleigronden. Uit de literatuur bleek dat erosie het
maatgevende bezwijkproces is bij zandgronden,
terwijl bij kleigronden de grond bezwijkt door
wegdrukken. Een eenvoudige modellering van
een groutstraal spuitend in deze grondsoorten is
gemaakt. De uitkomsten van deze modellering zijn
vergeleken met de werkelijk bereikte reikwijdtes in
Amsterdam. Het blijkt dat de gemodelleerde reik-
wijdtes in zandgronden groter en in kleigronden
kleiner zijn dan in werkelijkheid. Oorzaak hiervan is
Amsterdam Centraal geanalyseerd. Het bleek niet
mogelijk algemeen geldende verbanden te vinden
tussen uitvoeringsparameters, grondparameters
en gemeten diameters van de jetgroutkolom aan
de hand van deze case. Belangrijkste oorzaak is
de gelaagdheid en heterogeniteit van bodem in
Amsterdam.
voordat definitieve jetgroutkolommen gemaakt
meten. Zo kunnen voor een gewenste kolomdia-
meter bij bekende grondparameters de benodigde
uitvoeringsparameters bepaald worden.

Theoretical and Experimental study on the placement of Xbloc
Single layer armouring is a state-of-the-art protec-
tion for rubble mound breakwaters. The quality of
placement affects interlocking of the armour units,
which is essential for the hydraulic stability of the
entire armour layer.
The main objective of this study is to make a
detailed design of an Xbloc placement, this includes
grid design, placement accuracy and quality control.
The study is based on a theoretical placement
analysis which is verified by large scale model tests.
Single layer armour units are placed on a prede-
fined staggered grid in order to achieve good
interlocking, this creates a stable armour layer.
The distance between armour units is essential for
proper functioning of the armour layer. Therefore,
single layer armour units shall be placed if possible
with a constant horizontal and upslope placement
distance, which results in a diamond-shaped place-
ment pattern. However, the placement pattern will
be distorted if the seabed level varies or if a section
of breakwater is curved (bended trunk sections or
roundhead).
To design a placement grid for a head a theoretical
model has been built, which is capable to design a
grid on irregular breakwater profiles. This model is
been tested in an experimental study. The proposed
placement model proved to predict stable unit posi-
tions even for breakwater heads.
The placement model has been recently applied for
the design of a breakwater, which is currently under
construction in Ireland.

Itapocú Inlet, Brazil
A study of the hydrodynamics and morphology
Despite the abundant appearance of coastal inlets
in Brazil, there are not many studies carried out
involving them. UNIVALI (Universidade do Vale do
Itajaí) has set up an investigation program to gain
more insight into the hydrodynamic and morphologic
behaviour of inlets along the Brazilian coast.
The main goal of this study is to investigate the
hydrodynamic behaviour and morpho- logy for
Itapocú inlet, situated in the south of Brazil. As a
sub-objective this study aims to give answer to the
question what happens with the hydrodynamic and
morphologic processes in case the inlet throat is
stabilized with breakwaters.
The hydrodynamic behaviour of Itapocú inlet is diffi-
cult to characterise. For that reason the changing
inlet characteristics were obtained from a Delft3D
model. The influence of the ocean is large during
spring tide and periods of minor river discharge.
However when the river discharge is large, or during
neap tide, the basin is mainly regulated by the river.
The reason for this continuing changing characteris-
tic is that tidal prism and river discharge (during half
a tidal cycle) have the same order of magnitude.
The changing equilibrium between these two most
important processes drives the morphology and
hydrodynamic of the whole basin.
The mouth of Itapocú inlet is very unstable. In the
last 10 years, strong wave induced, northern direc-
ted, longshore sediment transport has shifted the
entrance about 100 m per year to the north.

Planning and technical feasibility study deepwater port ‘Zona Portuaria Simon Bolivar’, Venezuela
Venezuela does not have a main port in the region
of Lake Maracaibo while the expectations
of the government of Venezuela for Lake Maracaibo
are high. In the current situation, there
are many small ports that are positioned at different
locations.
The government of Venezuela would like to
construct one main port in the region between
The Gulf of Venezuela and Lake Maracaibo, as
presented with the white dot in the figure

The future port has to contribute to the necessary
economic growth and at the
same time, the environmental conditions of Lake
Maracaibo have to be improved. To gain more
cargo throughputs and reduce the contamination
of salinity in Lake Maracaibo, this deep water port
needs to be created and the channel between Lake
Maracaibo and the Gulf of Venezuela need
to be closed for sea going vessels. By creating a
deep water port, cargo such as
oil, coal, iron ore, petrochemicals, cement
grain, other dry bulk and containers is converged
and can be transported in larger
consignments.

Transverse slope effects on widely graded sediment
Experimental and computational research
The floods of the River Rhine and the River Meuse
in 1993 and 1995 pointed out the importance of
river intervention works to maintain safety for
surrounding inhabitants. To predict the consequen-
ces of such engineering measures on river morpho-
logy, numerical computer models are used. Due to
the high socio-economic value of the Dutch river
system and the importance of continuous navigabi-
lity, possible disturbances in this system have to be
carefully analysed. To gain a higher accuracy, the
gradation of sediment has recently been implemen-
ted in these models. An important factor in river
bed morphology is the gravitational influence on the
direction of sediment transport e.g. in river bends
and on side banks. This influence is modelled using
deterministic formulae for uniform sediment.
The main objective of this study is to review the
applicability to widely graded sediment of the
present formulae for transverse slope effects.
This is done by comparing the measurements of a
laboratory experiment to an analytical model and to
the output of numerical simulations. The laboratory
research that was conducted at the Fluid Mechanics
Laboratory of Delft University of Technology, consi-
sted of four levelling experiments at different flow
velocities and with different sediment composi-
tions. Three experiments were done using a tri-
modal sediment mixture and one experiment with a
uniform mixture. A transversely sloping profile that
is derived from the analytical model, was construc-
ted from the sand mixture in a laboratory flume. A
uniform flow was then created and the movement of
the bed was measured as it slowly levelled towards
a cross-sectional horizontal equilibrium (see Figure
1). The analytical model is a first order approxima-
tion of a small transverse distortion, derived from
the continuity and transport equations using the
deterministic formula of Talmon for the transverse
slope effect. As this model is representing only
uniform sediment, a numerical simulation in Delft3D,
using graded sediment calculations, is added using
the formulae of Koch and Flokstra and of Parker and
Andrews for transverse slope effects.
When comparing the development of the measured
transverse profiles to the models, a good agreement
is found for the experiment with uniform sediment,
but a constant underestimation of the involved
timescales is found for the tri-modal mixture. In
order to find a better agreement of the numerical
model, the parameters of the Koch and Flokstra
formula for transverse slope effect were varied to fit
the timescales of the simulations for the tri-modal
mixture to that of the experiments. A more accurate
numerical approximation of the transverse slope
effect was found using the following formula:
Considering the design and the execution of the
levelling experiments it can be concluded from
this study that the method used is adequate.
Considering the morphological modelling of trans-
verse slope effects it can be concluded that none of
the tested formulae for transverse slope effect can
accurately predict the transverse deviation of sedi-
ment transport within their default parameter range.

Drifting Sea Ice
Natural reserves present in the Arctic play an
important role in meeting the future world energy
demand, as this demand is growing and other
reserves are depleting. Exploration and production
of these reserves is a challenging job, as one has
to consider additional parameters in the design of
offshore structures and pipelines and in operations.
One of them is the presence of sea ice, which is in
constant motion.
The objective of this study is to enlarge the under-
standing of the relationship between the movement
of sea ice and its influencing forces. A literature
study is performed to identify the key processes,
indicating that currents and wind are the main
driving forces of the ice. For thick ice, other factors
such as the Coriolis Force and internal ice stress
become important as well. The results of the litera-
ture study are used to analyze an extensive dataset
on ice movement, gathered within the scope of the
Sakhalin II-project in the Sea of Okhotsk.
The relationship between ice and its driving forces
was examined using a linear regression analysis.
The results indicate that the current is dominant in
the ice movement in the Sakhalin region, and wind
is of significant influence. Together these forces
explain the majority of the ice movement, which can
be described by the local current and a percentage
of the local wind velocity.
Wind-induced ice drift proved to be dependent of
the wind direction and velocity. For low velocities,
the linear relationship between the ice movement
and the wind does not hold. Local depth showed to
be of no influence. Thick, deformed ice significantly
responds less to wind forcing than smooth thin ice.
This is due to the extra drag exerted under the
water line.
The results of this study can be used in statistical
and numerical forecasting of sea ice movement, but
also provide insight in the movement of icebergs
in the vicinity of offshore platforms. Subsequently,
it hands valuable input for probalistic design of
offshore structures in the Arctic region.
Further research should focus on the effects of
internal ice stress on the ice drift and the deve-
lopment of sea ice load calculations methods that
include velocity-effects. Also, the results of this
study should be verified with full-scale spatial
measurements and measurements from other Arctic
regions.

A probabilistic fl ood risk assessment and the impact of compartmentation
In this thesis a probabilistic flood risk assessment
has been applied at dike ring area IJsselmonde.
Flood scenario probabilities have been determined
and their corresponding flood simulations have been
carried out. This resulted in the here presented
FN-curve. The second objective was to study the
impact of compartmentation. Compartmentation
can be defined as the division of the overall system
in compartments resulting in isolation per compart-
ment and therefore providing protection to the over-
all system by reducing the consequences of initial
failure. In many areas in the Netherlands secondary
defences are present in the landscape and will influ-
ence the flood progress. Also natural differences in
terrain level and artificial earth embankments (rail-
roads) will affect the development of a flood. The
flood progress determines the expected economical
damage and the expected number of casualties.
To describe the impact of compartmentation the
following characteristics are identified: The distribu-
tion of flood scenario probabilities over the primary
defences, the hydraulic loads on a functioning
secondary defence, the reliability of the secondary
defences and the spatial distribution of value over
the compartments. The quantity of these characte-
ristics together with their variety in nature implies
the impact of compartmentation is highly dependent
on local characteristics. In this thesis it is shown
secondary defences can have a significant impact
on the flooded area, the water depths, the flooding
velocities, the expected economical damage and the
expected number of casualties of a flood scenario.
Simulations show a reduction of both the expec-
ted economical damage and the expected number
of casualties due to the presence of a secondary
defence in a flood scenario is possible. In this case
the additional economical damage and casualties
in the flooded compartment are outweighed by the
prevention of greater economical damage and more
casualties in neighbouring compartments.
The simulations show it is also possible the presence
of a secondary defence results in a reduction of the
expected economical damage while simultaneously
resulting in an increase of the expected
number of casualties. In this case the higher floo-
ding velocities and greater water depths in the
flooded compartment result in an increase of the
expected number of casualties in the flooded
compartment, which outweighs the prevention of
casualties in neighbouring compartments

Saturation in the New York City Watershed
A new method to determine the extent of the saturated areas
Most people don’t like to drink water that is polluted
with pathogens and nutrients. The drinking water of
New York City originates in the Catskill Mountains,
a rural area, characterized by dairy farming and
forests. The relatively clean water from this waters-
hed is not purified, but due to recent water quality
regulations the pollutant load should be minimized.
Pathogens and nutrients originate in dairy manure
that is applied on the fields. Pollutants on satura-
ted areas are easily transported to the reservoirs.
Saturated areas can be found around the streams,
and become larger when the area becomes wetter.
If the extent of the saturated areas is known, the
farmer can apply manure on fields that not saturate,
thereby considerably decreasing the pollutant load
to reservoirs.
In this research a new method was developed to
determine the extent of the saturated areas. Only
precipitation and streamflow data are required
as input. The method is based on the concepts
of ‘saturation excess’, while existing methods use
outdated concepts.
The new method is in agreement with available
field measurements of the saturated areas in the
Townbrook watershed. However, a more thorough
verification should be done in follow-up research.

Waterfront Woudrichem gebruikt. Het betreft hier
een buitendijks opgehoogd
bedrijventerrein met een
jaarlijkse overstromings-
kans van 1:10 en is gelegen
aan de Afgedamde Maas bij
Woudrichem. Momenteel
wordt een mogelijk bedrijf-
verplaatsing onderzocht
waarna herinrichting van het
gebied aan de orde komt.

village is not far from achieving a long desired goal:
to be able to generate electricity with flowing water.
The village, named Palumeu, is located in the South
of Suriname and the people here are self-suffi-
cient in every aspect of their way of living, which is
mainly composed of fishing, hunting and practicing
agriculture. The village, like so many others in the
hinterland of Suriname, lacks besides electricity,
sanitation and drinking water facilities.
My research aims at determining whether a rainfall-
runoff relationship of the Panato catchment can be
established by calibrating a rainfall-runoff model
with other catchments in the vicinity of the Panato
catchment. With the insights in the runoff fluctua-
tions of the Panato creek an optimum management
of the hydro power generation at Panato can be
realized.
The question that arises during the long dry season
is: “How to maximize the hydro-power generation
with the available water resources? “.The catchment
of the Panato can be defined as an ungauged basin,
a basin which lacks adequate records of hydrological
observations to enable computations of hydrologi-
cal variables of interest. The method used in this
research to be able to predict the basin responses
is the extrapolation of response information from a
gauged to an ungauged basin (I.A.H.S., 2003). This
approach is found very appropriate for the interior
part of Suriname.
The great challenge during the research was the
calibration and validation of the Rainru model, a
rainfall-runoff model developed by Savenije (1997),
with the available hydrometric and meteorological
data. The model being used is especially useful for
ungauged basins like in Suriname, where there is a
minimum of hydrological and meteorological data
available. The input of the model is limited to one
parameter only, the rainfall. A visit to Suriname was
of importance to collect all relevant data and litera-
ture and to make an observational visit to the site
of the dam. With the simulated discharges for the
Panato catchment, scenarios have been analyzed
for the generation of hydro-power. Since there are
numerous villages like Palumeu in the hinterlands
of Suriname, this project can be seen as a pilot
project for other future mini hydro-power projects.
The results from this report will hopefully serve
as an example for future hydrological modelling in
Suriname.

Application of a semi-distributed hydrological model based on the REW approach to the Collie River Basin, Western Australia
The current generations of hydrological models
have their advantages and disadvantages. One
of the major shortcomings of the existing models
(physically-based distributed models) is that they
require detailed information about soil properties
and geometry and suffer from immense demands
on data, and time consuming. In order to overcome
these problems, a new approach has been develo-
ped, which is called the Representative Elementary
Watershed (REW) approach. This approach has
equations which have been derived at the scale
of REW. This is the scale at which predictions are
usually required. A catchment is divided into several
REW’s. Each REW includes an ensemble of five zero-
dimensional sub-regions in which water fluxes are
simulated, based on the coupling of mass conserva-
tion and momentum balance equations. In order to
close this set of equations, the exchange flux terms
must be parameterized using expressions in terms
of other resolved variables. In the last couple of
years much improvement has been made on these
closure relations by e.g. Lee and Zhang. This led to
two different models. REWASH, developed by Zhang
et al., and is mainly tested in a temperate climate,
while CREW (Lee) has been tested in both a tempe-
rate and an arid climate. These models were inves-
tigated during this research. Both models have the
same theoretical background although the outcome
is different. Differences have been recognised e.g.
in the way hydraulic conductivities for the unsatura-
ted and saturated zone have been defined, the defi-
nition of groundwater flow, mass exchange across
mantle segment and the description of the variable
source area.
For this research CREW has been applied to the
Collie River Basin, Western Australia. A top-down
approach has been applied to analyse the available
data.
While applying CREW, the river basin is divided into
a number of sub-catchments, also known as REW’s,
according to the Strahler order of the network. The
Collie River Basin is characterised by strong spatial
gradients in precipitation, potential evaporation
and vegetation cover. During the implementation of
CREW to the Collie River Basin a few issues were
encountered, for which a solution has been found.
Due to the high spatial variability of precipitation in
the catchment, a heterogeneous precipitation field
was applied in the model. The differences of the
results using a homogeneous and heterogeneous
precipitation field have been illustrated, and it has
been shown that the latter produced better results
for the streamflows. For the heterogeneous precipi-
tation field, inverse distance was used as an inter-
polation technique. Three cases have been tested
where the catchment is discretized into 1, 5 and 27
REWs. It is shown that using more REWs does not
necessarily improve the results. The results for 5
REWs are obviously an improvement comparing with
just 1 REW. Increasing the number of REWs further
to 27 REWs does not bring out significant improve-
ment. Based on the results and the modifications
made to CREW, it can be said that the model still
requires further improvement; however the peaks
in the Collie River are reasonably well simulated. So
CREW can be applied to a catchment like the Collie
River Basin. By using a top-down analysis and the
CREW model, a better understanding about the
hydrological system and hydrological processes has
been obtained.

Model Predictive Control on Irrigation Canals; application of various internal models
Over the last decade the section Operational Water
Management of the Delft University of Technology
has done research on the improvement of effi-
ciency of irrigation systems by applying control,
based on system and control theory. Feedback and
feed forward controllers have been designed to
control water levels in irrigation canals with multi-
ple reaches in series. This thesis is done within the
framework of current research on the potential of
more advanced model based controllers.
The applied control technique is known as Model
Predictive Control (MPC). All MPC controllers have
four components in common:
A simplified internal model is used to predict both
the future free and forced response of a water
system;
The control action is the result of an optimiza-
tion: all future system states and control actions
are predicted and weighted into a specified future
prediction horizon;
The optimization can be subject to constraints: limi-
tations on structure capacities and allowed system
states are taken into account. All violations of cons-
traints within the prediction horizon are avoided (if
physically possible);
Only the first control action in the optimization is
executed by the actuators. Hereafter, measure-
ments update the system state and a new optimiza-
tion is started.
In this research, three different internal models
have been designed to control water levels in an irri-
gation canal. The controller makes use of a simpli-
fied internal model in order to save on computation
time. The first two internal models are based on the
Integrator Delay Model, which represents an irriga-
tion canal as a number of pools with delay times in
series. The internal model is written in State Space
Notation. Both controllers have been tested on a
hydrodynamic model and meet the requirements on
maintaining water levels within 15 centimeters from
set point. The controller with gate control shows
both tighter and smoother control than the control-
ler with flow control.
The controller with flow control has also been tested
on an actual irrigation canal, namely the WM-canal
near Phoenix, Arizona. MPC has been successfully
applied on a real-world irrigation canal for the first
time in history. The controller has successfully
controlled a scheduled flow change in the canal,
but is sensitive to flow conditions and thus the
discrepancy between actual and fixed rounded delay
times. The used control time step is 240 seconds.
Research has also been done on the applicability of
an internal model based on the full de Saint-Venant
equations. The advantage of using these equations
is that change in delay times is no longer relevant
and the size of the internal model is only determined
by the spatial discretization. Kalman filtering has
been applied to better estimate the actual water
surface within a reach. Tests show that the imple-
mentation of the equations works but that this
type of internal model is useless for the considered
WM-canal, because the internal model cannot cope
with drying. A refinement of the internal model is at
present infeasible, due to the required extra compu-
tation time.

termijn is noodzakelijk. Dit komt door de gevolgen
van energie-uitwisseling met de omgeving en door
het toenemende aantal systemen, waardoor potenti-
ele problemen groeien. Bovendien wordt het steeds
drukker in de ondergrond, waardoor tussen syste-
men onderling problemen kunnen ontstaan. Beide
punten zijn van belang voor vergunningverleners en
beleid.
KWO-systemen momenteel warmte lozen.
geling.

Use of culverts in dikes in the fl oodplain
In 1993 and 1995 the Netherlands were
started by two flood waves. They did not
cause much damage in the floodplains,
but they made clear that it should not be
taken for granted that the Netherlands are
protected for floodings. Therefore in 1996
the policy ‘Ruimte voor de rivier’ came to
effect. In this policy measures are sought to protect
the Netherlands during flood waves. One of the
measures is the lowering of the hydraulic rough-
ness in the floodplains, so the fall is decreased. The
hydraulic roughness of the dikes in the floodplains
can be decreased, for example by letting water flow
through the dikes (through culverts). These dikes
are elevations, which connect the summer dike
and the winter dike, they lay perpendicular to the
current.
The problem of many measures is the uncertainty of
the effect during a flood wave, this applies for this
measure as well.
It is important to know how much the water level
lowers if culverts are used in the dikes in the flood-
plains. After this effect is studied, the measure can
be applied in the floodplains.
The objective of this report is to get insight in
the flow of water around a dike with a culvert.
Important are the fall caused by the construction
and the distribution of the flow over the construc-
tion and through the culvert. Three research questi-
ons are posed:
• What is the effect of the use of culverts in dikes in
the floodplain?
• Is the fall caused by the construction as a whole
equal to the addition of the separate fall caused
by the current through the culvert and the current
over the crest?
• Is there a relation between (hcrest/hculvert) and
(ucrest/uculvert) or (qcrest/qculvert)?
The first step is literature research for the hydrau-
lic roughness of dikes and the occurrence and
efficiency of culverts. These were found and the
constructions can occur in different flow regimes:
free flow and fully submerged flow. Each regime has
different discharge coefficients.
To get more insight in the effect of the
measure, with the WAQUA-model of
Rijkswaterstaat (a 2D-flowmodel) the remo-
val of two dikes in the floodplain is simulated
in the project area, the Beuningse Waard
near Nijmegen. During a flooding the water
level decreased 0,0085 meter. This small lowering
is caused by the situation in the floodplain; present
obstacles have a negative influence on the effect of
the measure. The complete removal of the two dikes
is a useful measure for ‘Ruimte voor de rivier’ due
to low costs. The use of culverts in the dikes in the
floodplain is not useful; the effect decreases and
the costs increase.
Subsequently fall and flow are measured for diffe-
rent scale models in a flume in the fluid mechanics
laboratory of the faculty of Civil Engineering of the
Delft University of Technology. Constructions with
different culvert heights are used to determine
the discharge coefficients. Only the culvert height,
water level and discharge are varied in the experi-
ments. The scale models had a slope of 1:3 and a
fixed crest height, 0,20 meters above the bottom.
The bottom of the model is removed in steps of
0,05 meters, to simulate the effect of a culvert. The
experiments are per unit of width and 3D-effects
are ignored.
With the results of the experiments the research
questions can be answered:
• The use of culverts in dikes in the floodplain has
effect. With a constant discharge this effect decre-
ased when the water level downstream increases.
The effect of the measure can be calculated for
the different flow regimes with de discharge coef-
ficients which are determined.
• The addition of the fall of the separate currents is
allowed. The effective height of flow through of
different construction elements can be added.
• The relation between flow through the culvert and
over the crest is: 1,2 uculvert = ucrest

Estimating the infl uence of on-farm Conservation Practices on the Water Balance, Case of the Mzinyathini Catchment in Zimbabwe
The Sub-Saharan region can be
characterised by erratic rainfall and
high population growth. Nevertheless,
95% (FAO, 2004) of the cultivated
land is solely dependant on rainfall.
Food security can only be reached
when more crops per drop is achieved
instead of increasing the stress on the available
Blue water resources. Given the limiting soil and
climatic conditions, there exists a yield gap between
what is (0.5-1 t/ha) and what can (1.5-2 t/ha) be
produced on a farm. This gap can be minimized
when farmers alter their management practices
and realize that their socio-economic conditions are
amenable to changes. Conservation farming groups
water, soil and crop management practices, which
focus on sustainable farming. Conservation farming
contributes to yield stability and dry spell mitigation
in drought prone regions. Tillage is an important
aspect of conservation farming, because it chan-
ges the surface conditions such as pore space and
roughness, affecting the potential for infiltration and
runoff. However, the key to successful conservation
farming is the integration of tillage within the total
production system. This means that besides apply-
ing, for example, zero tillage, mulching or ridging, it
is also important to focus on measures that incre-
ase the water uptake capacity of the plants, such
as, pest management, crop rotations, weeding,
etc. Research from several countries show signifi-
cant improvements in crop yields and reduced soil
erosion after the introduction of alternative tillage
practices for conventional mouldboard ploughing.
Thus, the risk of crop failure as a result of water
stress can be decreased significantly, moreover the
willingness to invest more in their crops in terms of
fertilization eventually leads to even higher yields.
However, with equipment and know-how available
adoption of conservation practices is still very low
due to lack of adequate labour, insecure land tenure
systems, limited access to credit and
markets, and failing technology trans-
fer. Proper socio-economic conditions
and land management increase the
resilience against calamities, so that,
for example, droughts not always lead
to social disaster. The catchment water
balance consists of physically based equations for
interception, transpiration and surface runoff, the
base flow component is calculated using a statistical
multiple linear regression model. The rainfall parti-
tioning on farm scale is linked to the input variables
from the multiple linear regression model. The input
variables can be adjusted to represent the effects
of different farm management implementations on
rainfall partitioning. This way farm management
innovations that work on a farm scale can be used
for the water balance on a catchment scale. There
is considerable more Green than Blue water availa-
ble in the catchment, so there is a lot of potential
for optimising rainfed agriculture. The goal of the
farm management practices is to maximize the tran-
spiration. It appeared to be effective to increase
the plant available soil moisture, but this reduces
the river recharge through base flow. Tied ridging
stop surface runoff from the plots, when applied
on a larger scale this has similar effects on the
river recharge. Decreasing the interception losses
through minimum tillage or mulching provides more
water for transpiration and runoff. The water is
transformed from interception loss to usable water
for plants, besides that, the effects for river water
users downstream are minimized.

Het onderzoek behelst de
ontwikkeling van een beslis-

Als eerste zijn er gevolgenbe-

weg- als scheepvaartverkeer
opgesteld om de interactie
tussen deze twee modalitei-

te beschrijven. Vervolgens zijn de relaties tussen de
invoervariabelen en de gevolgenbeschrijving onder-

zoals onderstaand weergegeven.

vastgoedontwikkeling zeer beperkt is.Er ontstaan

financieringstekort, vooralsnog 945 miljoen euro.
cieringstekort alsnog 896 miljoen euro.
gen.
De haalbaar-
heid van de
Zuiderzeelijn
is in financieel
opzicht dus
op zijn minst
onwaarschijnlijk
andere resultaten zullen leiden.

Optimal utilization of capacity
A practical judgement of quality based on an analytic model
An expected growth of the transportation on the
railway network with 50% in the next two deca-
des raises the question if the current capacity is
sufficient. Instead of increasing the capacity this
research focuses on the utilization of the existing
capacity. The goal is to obtain insight in the current
utilization of capacity and the possibilities to
improve this. Because of the occurrence of many
delays, the Gooilijn will be the subject of a case
study.
By means of a statistic data analysis of realized
train movements with the program TNV-Prepare, the
train routes and running times are determined. With
this, the speeds and delays are calculated at critical
points on the railway line. Together with a regres-
sion analysis, this gives an idea of the distribution of
the delays. It appears that there are differences in
the development of delay in both directions and also
for the different train series.
The program ANKE gives a judgement of the quality
on railway nodes by means of an analytic calculation
given the infrastructure, the timetable and the initial
delay per train series. This quality index also gives
an indication of the load of the railway nodes. In
order to determine these indexes ANKE also calcu-
lates the running times and the minimal time head-
way between the trains. Together with the analysis
with TNV-Prepare, a good indication of the bottle-
necks on the railway line is given. The whole part
of the railway line between Weesp and Hilversum
(double track) is overloaded with the maximum
score for the junction at Hilversum.
All the analysis is now performed again at the
bottleneck in Hilversum, but this time on the level of
the blocks between the signals. The running times
and blocking times are calculated and are compared
with the results from ANKE. By this, the opportunity
to determine the causes of large time headways
comes into
existence.
Proposals
to improve
the current
situation are
developed
based on
this informa-
tion and are
tested after-
wards.
Main conclusion is that decreasing the distance
between the block signals and reducing the speed
differences along the track, have a significant effect
on the quality indexes because of the shorter time
headways. This results in a better utilization of the
current capacity and there is no need for increasing
this capacity. Finally a proposal to improve the utili-
zation of capacity on the Gooilijn is made.

Development of a CFD model for a phosphorus producing submerged arc furnace
A computational fluid dynamics model representing
a submerged arc furnace used for the production
of phosphorus was developed. The furnace model-
led is part of the phosphorus production process
of Thermphos International in Vlissingen, The
Netherlands.
The submerged arc furnace (SAF) is fed through
gravity with cokes, pebbles and pellets contai-
ning apatite (calcium phosphate). In the furnace
the apatite reacts with the silica present to form
phosphorus oxide gas (P2O5). This is reduced with
solid carbon to form a predominantly elemental
phosphorus and carbon monoxide gas mix leaving
the furnace through two outlets on top. The energy
required for heating and melting of the bed and for
the reduction reaction supplied by means of three
carbon electrodes. The electrodes are submerged
in the packed bed and arcs are formed between the
electrode tips and the slag surface. The by-products
of the process are a calcium silicate slag and ferrop-
hosphorus, both leave from tap holes on the lower
side of the furnace. Due to the large volume of slag
produced relative to phosphorus, small percentages
of P2O5 result in substantial phosphorus losses.
This thesis is part of a project to create a Dynamic
- CFD hybrid model. The purpose of the CFD model
is to function as a tool with which data is created
for an off-line look up table. This will supply the
dynamic model with additional variables to improve
its predictive ability. The dynamic-CFD model can be
used to optimize the furnace and minimise losses.
The model was constructed using GAMBIT as pre-
processor and solved with the commercial CFD
package FLUENT. A mass balance based on the 2003
year figures from Thermphos was created to assist
modelling. The thermochemical database software
HSC Chemistry and feed/product temperatures were
used to calculate the energy needed to heat, melt
and convert the materials described in the mass
balance.
The packed bed solids are not physically present in
the model; a FLUENT porous media model is used.
This porous media model can be applied to a fluid
zone and is intended to simulate porosity by crea-
ting a negative momentum source. Because the
packed bed is not physically present the heating
and melting of the bed while moving down the
furnace is modelled using a user defined function.
The function defines an energy sink dependent on
the specific heat (Cp), bed velocity and temperature
gradient. To include the melting of the materials
in the model, the enthalpy of transformation was
applied over a temperature range and added to the
Cp. The change of the feed materials packed bed
to a carbon packed bed with molten slag trickling
through was also included in the Cp for the packed
bed.
Thermal radiation plays a large role in high tempe-
rature heat transfer, however FLUENT does not
account for it in the porous media model. Therefore
the effective thermal conductivity of the packed bed
was modelled using two approaches; a theoretical
and a CFD modelling approach. In the theoretical
approach a model from literature was used to simu-
late the radiative heat transfer in the bed. For the
second approach a FLUENT model was constructed
consisting of a representative volume of bed contai-
ning feed particles. The heat transfer through this
volume at different temperatures was modelled to
obtain the effective heat transfer coefficient.
To model the decrease of P2O5 in the packed bed a
User Defined Scalar was used representing kg/m3
P2O5, moving down with the burden flux velocity.
The decrease of the scalar was calculated using
temperature dependent reaction kinetics. The kg/
m3s P2O5 decrease is used to calculate the gaseous
product generation and the reaction energy sink.
Results show that the developed CFD model can
give a good representation of the temperature, flow
and reaction distributions in the furnace, at given
boundary conditions and material properties.

The effects of surfactants on the effi ciency of solution gas drive
Some heavy oil reservoirs show anomalous behavior
in primary production by solution gas drive mecha-
nism, with rates of production better than predicted.
Interpretation based on the high viscosity of liquid
which causes a slower diffusion rate have been
proposed. However the experiments with crude
oil and mineral oil with the same viscosity showed
that solution gas drive is more efficient in the crude
oil than the mineral oil. Crude oils usually contain
some natural surfactants like asphaltene which can
be accumulated at the interface of the gas and oil
phase. As a result a skin of the surfactant molecules
will be formed at the interface which can hamper
the mass transfer. In order to understand the real
mechanism, in this work the inhibition effects of
an adsorbed monolayer of surfactant molecules at
the interface of the gas and the liquid phases on
the diffusion process are experimentally investiga-
ted. There are many methods to measure the mass
transfer rate of a gas into a liquid, but in this work,
it is based on the fact that when a non equilibrium
gas is brought into contact with the liquid at rest
inside a glass tube, the diffusion into the liquid
phase will occur.
The effects of surfactants on the diffusion process
are analyzed by comparing the pressure decline of
carbon dioxide due to the diffusion into distilled
water and the diffusion into the surfactant soluti-
ons. The experimental data shows significant diffe-
rences for the pressure decline of carbon dioxide
due to diffusion into distilled water and surfactant
solutions. The pressure decline and consequently
the mass transfer rate into the surfactant solutions
is much slower in compared to that for distilled
water. Also the experiment shows that the diffusion
process depends on the surfactant concentration
and it is slower if the surfactant concentration is
above the critical micelle concentration. One reason
can be the much higher concentration of the micel-
les in the high concentration surfactant solutions.
In this work the mathematical analysis of the diffu-
sion process of a gas into a liquid is given. The
computed values of the gas pressure are matched
with the recorded values from the experiments to
obtain the diffusion coefficient.

An emf cell to measure thermodynamic properties of the magnesium – salt fl ux – impurity system
The light weight of magnesium combined with its
high strength makes it suitable for many applica-
tions. The demand for magnesium continuously
increased over the past decade, especially in the
automotive industry. The production was 570 000
tonnes in 2004. Primary production of magnesium
is done by electrolysis and metallothermic reduc-
tion, consuming around 20 kWh/kg magnesium. The
secondary production, done by remelting of scrap
either with a salt flux or without, requires only 3
kWh/kg.
For ecological reasons it is important that recycling
is improved and optimized. Recycling saves energy,
raw material resources and reduces the landfill of
waste products. The utilization cycle of magnesium
is not closed, one of the open ends in the cycle
is post consumer scrap containing coated scrap.
Solutions for recycling of coated scrap require a
good understanding of the remelting process.
The presence of pigments, impurities or alloying
elements can influence extensive thermodynamic
properties of the molten metal - salt flux system
and therefore the equilibrium between those two
phases. It is expected from literature that magne-
sium will reduce most oxides, leading to metal loss
and changes in alloy and salt composition. The loss
of magnesium and alloying elements in the salt flux,
or the collection of pigments and impurities in the
metal melt has to be determined.
The objective of this thesis is to build an electro-
chemical formation cell, suitable for measuring
extensive thermodynamic properties of the molten
magnesium - salt flux - impurity system. With this
cell it is possible to quantify and explain the influ-
ence of impurities on the remelting system.
EMF measurements are performed with the
constructed cell, for molten magnesium in equi-
librium with MgCl2 - NaCl - KCl electrolytes. First
experiments were carried out with a known elec-
trolyte from literature to calibrate the cell. This
was followed by an experiment with pure MgCl2 to
determine E0. Finally experiments with an approa-
ched Emgesal composition were carried out to esta-
blish an Emgesal base line. Unfortunately the last
experiments all failed, probably due to a leak in the
system or failure of the quartz sheathing around the
alloy electrode.
The results of each experiment are plotted in a
graph of Eemf versus T, and form a linear relation.
The two replicates were reproducible within 20 mV
which is 1% of the total measured E. Main inaccu-
racies are caused by the temperature profile in the
cell and evaporation of the electrolyte. Both, alloy
and electrolyte are chemically analyzed afterward,
but were difficult to interpret. It is essential for
further experiments that the reproducibility of the
Emgesal baseline is determined. Then, impurities
can be added to the electrolyte and their influence
on the system can be determined. A difference in
Eemf directly reflects the changes in the thermody-
namic properties of the system.
Besides that the cell is suited to measure the effect
of coating impurities in the remelting system, it is
also able to measure the effect of alloying elements.

Modelling of Recycling Systems - Applied to Car Recycling
This thesis explores the limits of recycling on a
fundamental basis. This fundamental basis suggests
that the high recycling quotas for end-of-life vehi-
cles (ELVs) as required by EU legislation could be
totally erroneous since it is based on poor first
principles argumentation. If this conjecture is true
then the monitoring of recycling quotas by legis-
lation could be the incorrect manner of controlling
environmental performance. Rather, it is suggested
that a market driven approach is required to ensure
optimal performance of the recycling system in
which each actor in the system optimises its activity
within the boundaries of its relevant environmental
legislation, physics, chemistry, which all dictate the
limits of recycling.
In order to illustrate this industry/market driven
approach, a system model was developed, conjec-
turing that the intrinsic property determining the
recyclability and recoverability of a product respec-
tively, is not just determined by the different mate-
rials and alloys used, but primarily by the mineral
or joint classes (combination of materials due to
design),particle size distribution and degree of libe-
ration (multi-material particles). These all affect
the physical separation efficiency, metallurgical
and energy recovery, which all in turn determine
the quality and economic value of the recycling
(intermediate) products in the recycling system.
The summation of these aspects determines the
economics and hence the recyclability and recovera-
bility of the product and therefore the recycling and
recoverability rate. Note that each system activity
as always run within the boundaries of normal envi-
ronmental legislation for process industries.
Based on these intrinsic properties, a fundamental
framework is developed as a common language
to harmonise recycling legislation with industrial
practice, separation physics and thermodynamics,
quality of recycling (intermediate) products, plant
statistics and if required, product design. This recy-
cling optimisation model, building on previous work
by the authors, not only describes physical separa-
tion and metallurgical processing, but also covers
the physical separation of shredder residue in close
connection to the thermal treatment of these mate-
rials. This model therefore adds significant detail
and novel aspects to previous models
In order to illustrate the mentioned conjecture, it is
shown how the optimisation model can be applied
by the recycling industry (for process optimisation
purposes) and legislator (for demonstrating the
arguments in favour of more flexibility and less
regulations) to build and evaluate recycling scena-
rios as a function of (future) car design, evaluate
future market directions (i.e., what effect EU legis-
lation has on the treatment of material in China),
find the balance between dismantling, post-shred-
ding technology (PST) and thermal processing, as a
function of the calorific input constraints of different
thermal treatment options, to name a few.
An important fundamental conclusion is that recy-
cling quotas of above 85% (plus standard deviation)
will probably be difficult to reach in future under
current EU legislation. The preferred process route
by the car industry with minimum dismantling (just
de-pollution), but including PST is feasible to reach
presently ca. 85% (plus a standard deviation).
However, new novel and innovative, light-weight
car designs, beneficial for less impact during use
phase, could encounter problems in future to reach
the required recycling quota of 85%, not to mention
and a recovery quota of 95% by 2015. This thesis
suggests that recycling should accommodate flexibi-
lity within its structure, i.e., feedstock, mechanical
recycling and energy recovery should together reach
as high as possible value within the constraints of
the market, technology and natural laws; matching
changing innovative new car designs. This would
help much to stimulate creative future design deve-
lopments and at the same time provide a basis to
run recycling and recovery technology at its funda-
mental maximum. A rigid quota driven legislation
is too inflexible to meet these requirements and
should be dropped for a market driven approach
that optimises the recycling system in its totality.

Dynamic Interaction between Slag and Coke in the Blast Furnace
In order to improve the blast furnace process it is
important to know more about the behavior of the
coke in the blast furnace. Coke degradation is a very
important aspect when considering the coke beha-
vior in the blast furnace. The interaction between
the liquids and the solid coke in the lower zone of
the blast furnace was still a blind spot in the inves-
tigations of coke degradation. This thesis has been
performed to investigate the interaction between
the liquid slag and the coke in the blast furnace. The
objective is to explain the interaction phenomena
between slag and coke by means of experimental
research, in order to determine to what extent this
influences the roles of the coke in the lower zone
of the blast furnace. The experimental research
has been performed with a hot trickle bed reactor.
This setup is able to perform slag-coke interaction
experiments at high temperatures (1550-1600 °C)
by means of a liquid slag trickling through a hot
packed coke bed. Two different slag-types (final and
primary) and two different coke-types (IJmuiden
and Chinese) have been used in the experiments.
Furthermore additional experiments with a FeO-
containing slag have been performed. The most
important conclusions and recommendations from
the experimental research are: 1) The impregnation
of both slag-types into both coke-types increases
with increasing reaction time. After 8 hours of
reaction time the experimental slags shows high
impregnation depths into both coke-types. 2) The
XRF-analysis of the experimental slags showed
that the SiO2-concentration of both slags rises with
increasing reaction time. This can be explained by
the assimilation of coke-ash into the slag during
the experiments. 3) The primary slag impregnates
faster into both coke-types than the final slag. The
reason for this is the lower initial SiO2-content of
the primary slag. The Chinese coke allows more
impregnation of both experimental slags than the
IJmuiden coke. Possibly the average pore radius
and tortuosity of the coke-pores are playing a role
in this observation. 4) The N2-flow in the trickle
bed reactor is enhancing the impregnation of slag
into coke. This is caused by the good drainage of
produced CO-gas. This stimulates the reduction
reactions between the slag and the coke that has
as result a good wetting and impregnating behavior
of the slag. 5) The FeO-containing slag experiments
showed a substantial higher static hold-up than
the other hot trickle bed reactor experiments. It is
expected that the interaction between slag and iron
is causing this. More research is needed to prove
this. The packed coke bed acts as a separator for
the liquid iron and slag. The iron and slag show a
distinct separation based on their density difference
within the packed coke bed. 6) An overall recom-
mendation is that the variables of the experimental
research should be varied more. This in order to
determine in more detail to what extend the coke
and slag composition and reaction time influence
the impregnation of slag into coke. Also the tempe-
rature should be used as a variable when investiga-
ting the coke-slag interaction. 7) It is recommended
to investigate to what extend the with slag impreg-
nated coke influences the blast furnace process,
as the impregnation may lead to a decrease in
reaction surface of the coke, in the lower zone of
the furnace. 8) Reaction times shorter than 2 hours
should be used in the performed FeO-containing
slag experiments, as all the FeO was already redu-
ced from the slag after the hot trickle bed reactor
experiments. 9) The carbon-content of the iron loca-
ted in the packed coke bed should be analysed after
the hot trickle bed reactor experiments, at different
reaction times. 10) In order to compare the inter-
action between different types of coke and slags it
is essential to perform the experimental research
under dynamic conditions.

The prediction of dross formation and the containment of dross on an Industrial Aluminium Recycling Plant
Any fresh aluminium or aluminium alloy surface,
solid or molten, will quickly form a protective oxide
layer when the surrounding medium contains even
a small amount of oxygen from any source (free
oxygen, moisture, or reducible oxides). After the
oxide layer has been formed the oxidised aluminium
is irretrievably lost. There is no economical way
to transform the aluminium oxide back into alumi-
nium. If molten aluminium or one of its alloys reacts
with air, a thin layer of aluminium oxide is formed
instantly. This layer transforms into an amorphous
oxide layer, which encapsulates a large amount
of liquid metal due to the capillary effects. This
mixture of oxides and liquid metal is referred to as
dross. Dross formation is a function of melt compo-
sition, temperature, exposed surface area, compo-
sition of atmospheric gasses, duration of exposure,
and flow regime in the melt. The dross layer, which
floats on top of the metal bath, is skimmed off and
cooled in custom made dross boxes. After cooling
this dross is stored and subsequently remelted to
recover the entrapped metal. Hot dross may contain
up to 80% metal, but the metal content will be
reduced dramatically if the dross is allowed to react
with air during cooling. The key to fast cooling of
dross and higher metal recovery of entrapped metal
is to cut off the air supply so that metal burn-off is
reduced to a minimum. The Konzelmann Aluminium
recycling plant in Hannover has therefore developed
and implemented a patented method to optimally
contain the internal dross by closed cooling in
custom made dross boxes.
The goal of this research project was to identify and
quantify the different sources of dross formation
at the recycling plant in Hannover by developing
a predicting model. The second objective was to
scientifically proof that the patented dross contain-
ment method results indeed in a higher recovery of
metal. During a period of seven months numerous
in-situ experiments have been done to collect the
required data at the Konzelmann plant in Hannover.
The experiments included the weighing of dross at
various locations during the process, melting and
analysis of dross samples and the measurement of
weightincrease, temperature and pressure during
cooling of different types of dross under various
conditions.
The results imply that modelling can shed a better
light on excessive dross generating sources, which
can be optimised in future. Besides this, the paten-
ted method for the containment of dross fundamen-
tally decreases the burn-off of aluminium inside the
dross down to less than 1% and results in higher
metal recovery during remelting of internal dross.
Closed cooling can easily be implemented in every
aluminium processing company against relative
low costs. Overall usage of closed cooling for the
annually generated amount of dross in Europe could
lead to 10% higher metal recovery with 15% less
production, resulting in fundamentally lower proces-
sing costs and higher profits. Additional environ-
mental benefits include lower energy consumption
and accompanied GHG emissions and lower amount
of generated dust, flue gas and salt slag.

Deposition of Colored Tracer Latex Particles in Sandstone
The re-injection of produced water is an impor-
tant prerequisite for maintaining pressure and for
flooding reservoirs. Unfortunately this may lead to
several severe problems. One particular source of
problems is the solids which are suspended in the
water. If they are deposited on or within the forma-
tion, the injectivity may be reduced dramatically.
This leads to wellbore damage.
Experimental work is presented to investigate the
filtration phenomenon that occurs during the injec-
tion of produced water and describe the transport
and capture of colloids in porous media. In particu-
lar the aim is to test the concept of transition time
when an external filter cake starts building on the
surface of porous medium.
To understand in detail the process of permeabi-
lity damage requires knowledge of the amount of
deposited particles along the core and at the outlet
of the core as a function of time. Therefore colored
tracer particles are used to investigate this pheno-
menon.
Latex particles with Blue, Red and Green color,
suspended in distilled water were injected into
Bentheim sandstone core samples, in order to
collect the effluents and quantify the amounts of
deposited particles in terms of colors and calcu-
late the effluent concentration of these samples.
Experiments were performed by varying parameters
like flow rate, concentration and order of injection.
The choice of different colors of latex particles is
to follow the tracking of particles and visualize the
deposition of colored particles using Image Analysis
with RGB system and Q win software.
The objective of this study is to investigate the
distribution of particles and the change in color,
testing the transition time and process of deposi-
tion: see which color comes out after the switching
time from one color to another one.
Experimental work was carried out with six experi-
ments consisting of pressure measurements along
the core and the measurement of effluent concen-
tration at the outlet using an RGB system.
Furthermore Image Analysis of the cores gives a
better idea about the internal and external filter
cake. This work is followed by visual analysis of the
experiments and an Interpretation and evaluation of
the data.

Sensitivity Study of Fracture Properties, Related to the Production of Hydrocarbons
The objective of this project is to study which and
how fracture parameters impact the accuracy of
hydrocarbon production forecasts using fluid flow
simulations. The work is based on surface and
subsurface data collected in the Tanqua-Karoo
basin, located in South Africa. This data served as
the base for discrete fracture network modeling
(DFN), performed with FracWorks XP*. Before DFN
modeling, a simple reservoir was built in Petrel**.
This model was gridded and used in FracWorks XP*.
The grid and the calculated fracture-matrix proper-
ties from FracWorks XP* were used to perform
fluid flow simulations with the commercial simulator
Eclipse**.
In the base case model, optimal flow parame-
ters are studied. The optimized base case model
serves to perform a sensitivity study of fracture
parameters. The fluid flow simulations that are
performed to obtain an optimized base case model
suggest that the presence of highly fractured zones
(swarms) do not influence the hydrocarbon produc-
tion. Furthermore, when well placement is paral-
lel to these highly fractured zones, hydrocarbon
production is longer at a constant rate and has a
higher oil recovery.
The sensitivity study shows that varying the matrix
permeability does not affect the fluid flow simu-
lations, while changing the fracture permeabilities
shows a significant influence on the production
behavior. For example, a decrease in fracture
permeabilities causes a delay in water break through
and a higher oil recovery. The influence of fracture
intensities only shows effects at a large decrease
in intensity with respect to the base case scenario.
At lower intensities the swarms start to influence
the hydrocarbon production. Fracture lengths do
not show any influence on the hydrocarbon produc-
tion when fracture swarms are present. The frac-
ture lengths only play a role when no swarms are
present. At both short as well as long fracture leng-
ths the favorable flow direction of the systematic set
decreases. Changing the fracture geometry has no
effect on the hydrocarbon production.

Numerical modelling of rock mass decay in road cuts
ollowing the initial stress release after excavation of
a road cut, weathering and erosion processes will
start acting upon the newly exposed slope material.
The resulting rock mass decay may have significant
effects on slope stability well before the envisaged
engineering lifetime of the slope. Therefore, it
would be a great advantage to be able to assess
the influence of rock mass decay in road cuts with
a suitable numerical model. Several models are
already available that quantify weathering or erosion
processes acting on a road cut, but what is not
readily available is a model describing the combined
effect of both processes. The integration of these
various processes into a working numerical model is
the topic of this research.
For the integration of the processes of weathering
and erosion into a numerical model, a conceptual
2D model for weathering and erosion (Huisman,
2006; to be published) is used as a basis. The main
part of the modelling is done using the 2D distinct
element computer code UDEC. The input parameters
as applied throughout this study were gathered for
two study slopes during a short fieldwork period in
the study area near Falset, Spain. For the creation
of the model, data derived for the Gavada slope,
is used. Furthermore, the developed model is vali-
dated through back-analysis of the observed slope
failure of the Masriudoms slope. For an assessment
of rock mass decay in road cuts, cross-sections of
both selected slopes are schematised together with
the rock material and discontinuity properties.
The results as determined by the different models
reveal that various factors, such as the elevation in
the slope, the slope retreat rate (Rs) or the expo-
sure time (t), have clear influences on the outcome
of the analysis and, thus, on the behaviour of the
slope. Displacements in the slope are increasing
with an increasing elevation and, for the greater
part, decreasing with an increasing rate of slope
retreat. Furthermore, a certain development of
displacements in time can be noticed; that is, a
decrease in displacements and subsequent stabi-
lisation of the slope during the first years after
excavation. This is followed by another peak incre-
ase in displacements, most probably caused by the
weakening of the rock mass through the process of
weathering. Finally, the displacements are slightly
decreasing, until a more or less constant value is
reached, leading to the assumption that after a
number of years the processes of weathering and
erosion reach equilibrium. Moreover, the
results as determined during the back-analysis
of the Masriudoms slope seem to be reasonable.
However, the observed slope failure could not
directly be modelled. This might be explained by the
fact that the influence of water, which has played a
significant role in the weakening processes of the
material and consequent failure, is not included in
this numerical model.

An analytical, numerical and experimental approach of parametric roll of a tophat in irregular seas
MSC developed a new kind of shallow draft spar
called Tophat. This spar has a very small draft
compared to conventional spars and has a very
large storage capacity. The roll response of this
Tophat is investigated as it might experience para-
metric roll in head seas. Parametric roll is better
known as Mathieu instability. It describes a large
amplitude response due to stability parameter varia-
tion in time at twice the natural frequency of roll.
An analytical expression for roll is derived in order
to predict this phenomenon in regular waves.
Additional numerical simulations have been done
with the AQWA program for calculations in regu-
lar as well as irregular sea conditions in the time
domain. The analytical expression showed the para-
metric roll instability very clearly, while the more
sophisticated AQWA calculations did not show any
unstable roll motion at all.
In order to investigate the problem experimen-
tally, model tests were performed in the towing
tank of Maritime Technology (Delft University of
Technology). Three different models were tested;
the original Tophat design (basic model), an inclined
wall design (inclined model) and a perforated skirt
design (perforated model). These models were
subjected to regular waves varying from one meter
to ten meter wave height. The behaviour in irregu-
lar waves was also investigated using the Pierson-
Moskowitch spectrum. The spectrum parameters
were selected to generate a pattern with a lot of
energy near the natural period of heave.
The models did not show parametric roll in regular
or irregular waves. However, the regular and irregu-
lar wave tests showed an unstable pitch response
for the basic and magnitude is modest and does not
endanger the viability of the design. inclined model.
In regular waves the unstable pitch response was
modest. Also in irregular waves modest unstable
pitch motions were observed. The perforated model
showed significant smaller pitch motions and no
instable behaviour whatsoever. The pitch response
is probably the result of the heave response at twice
the pitch natural frequency. Therefore, this unstable
behaviour is likely parametric pitching.
The study showed that the Tophat may exhibit para-
metric pitch in specific sea conditions. The resulting
magnitude is modest and does not endanger the
viability of the design.

Standardised wave data bases on power level
The thesis describes the
results of an effort to intro-
duce Standardised Wave
Data (SWD) for perfor-
mance calculations of Wave
Energy Converters (WEC’s).
A calculation method is
proposed to generate
representative scatter
diagrams from a number
indicating the available
power in the sea at certain
location (power level) and
a parameter related to that location. The SWD is
designed to be part of an overall WEC Performance
Standard (WPS). Such a standard should make
communication between engineers and investors
easier and provide a tool to compare the different
systems. The lack of such a standard hinders the
wave energy business to mature.
Scatter diagrams and power levels for 33 locations
in Western Europe provided by the European Wave
Energy Atlas (WERATLAS [8]) function as reference.
Ochi’s bivariate log-normal [12] model for the joint
probability of significant wave height (Hs) and a
significant wave period (Tp or Te) was used to
generate theoretical scatter diagrams. To generate
a scatter diagram one must know the probabilities
of occurrence for a range of sea states (characteri-
zed by Hs and Tp or Te). For a given sea state, the
Ochi model generates a certain probability occur-
rence. Five constants govern the model. The idea
is to find a relationship between these constants
and power level. Each Ochi-constant was written
as a linear function of power level. A single set of
functions applicable for all the reference locations
appeared to be too crude. A solution to this problem
is presented. Performance calculations of four
WEC’s were done using the SWD. Finally, the SWD
was compared to other scatter diagrams from other
sources.
This report also touches on
some remote but relevant
issues. The spectral form
commonly used for power
estimates in the wave energy
business is the Bretschneider
spectrum. To see if the choice
of the spectral form influen-
ces the results of power and
energy calculations, three
other standard spectral forms
were studied. Secondly, the
directional characteristics of
ocean waves and their effect on the performance
of a WEC are briefly discussed. Finally, only very
shortly, standardisation concerning the perfor-
mance estimations of a WEC per individual sea
state is discussed. The creation of a WEC power
matrix standard is beyond the scope of this report.
However, it is the other important building block of
a general WEC Performance Standard.

Deep water buoys – review study
Shallow water Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring
(CALM) buoys have been used for many years as an
(off)loading terminal for shuttle tankers near shore.
A shuttle tanker can be connected to the CALM buoy
and the crude oil can be (off)loaded. Hundreds of
these shallow water CALM buoys are used worldwide.
Nowadays oil- and gas reservoirs are found in
deeper waters of more than 1000 m. Floating,
Production, storage and Offloading vessels (FPSO’s)
are used to produce the oil and gas. West Africa
is one of the locations where these deep water
reservoirs are being produced. Many of the FPSO’s
offshore West Africa are spread moored. Operators
do not offload the FPSO in tandem configuration to
reduce the risk of collision. Therefore a Deep Water
Buoy (DWB) situated approximately 2 km from the
FPSO is used to offload the FPSO. This DWB is
similar to a shallow water CALM buoy, regarding its
shape and anchoring configuration. However the
DWB is much larger than a shallow water CALM
buoy. Furthermore this floating buoy is more subjec-
ted to fatigue loads. Worldwide only nine DWB’s
have been supplied or will be supplied in the near
future. They are all located offshore West Africa.
Eight out of these nine buoys are a Single Buoy
Moorings (SBM) product.
A review study has been performed to investigate
the possibilities of improving the existing DWB to
make it more competitive. First the existing DWB’s
have been investigated both technically and econo-
mically, which led to the requirements and objec-
tives for a new DWB. One of the objectives was to
avoid the wave zone to reduce the fatigue motions
of the buoy. Next concepts have been generated
and the submerged buoy concept has been selec-
ted. The submerged buoy consists of an octagonal
shaped ring buoy, which is located 50 m below Mean
Sea Level (MSL). It is anchored to the seabed by
four vertical tendons and one catenary anchor leg,
which opposes the pull from the Oil Offloading Lines
(OOL’s). The buoy has a large net buoyancy, which
– in combination with inclined tendons – generates
the horizontal restoring force of the system.
The hydrodynamic behavior of the submerged buoy
has been investigated. The following topics have
been investigated and compared to an existing
DWB, Kizomba A:
• First order responses to regular waves (buoy
motion responses en anchor leg tension respon-
ses)
• Extreme buoy excursions and anchor leg tensions
under operational and survival conditions
• Fatigue lives of the anchor legs
• Decay behavior of the system
The conclusions are that both the buoy motion
responses and the anchor leg tension responses are
reduced significantly. The extreme excursions and
tensions comply with the applicable regulations. The
fatigue lives of the anchor legs are increased by
at least a factor of 190. Finally the natural periods
of the system do not correspond to wave periods,
which can be encountered offshore West Africa at
50 m below MSL.
The costs of the submerged buoy have been compa-
red to the costs of an average existing DWB. The
costs of the submerged buoy concept are estimated
to be higher, because of the expensive anchoring
system. Therefore an alternative anchoring system
has been studied briefly. The four vertical tendons
have been replaced by six polyester ropes. This
system is estimated to be cheaper, while having the
same benefits as the system with four tendons.
It is recommended that this system is to be inves-
tigated in more detail to check its feasibility. If the
alternative with polyester ropes turns out to be
feasible a closer look should be given to the instal-
lation method, the design of the submerged swivel,
the structural design of the buoy and the design
of the submerged hose between the buoy and the
shuttle tanker.

Pipeline rotation during installation of inline structures
During installation of pipe-
lines, inline structures are
sometimes attached to
the pipeline. Inline struc-
tures have to be installed
within certain limits with
respect to rotation. Due to
a number of reasons, but
most importantly due to the
plastic deformation resul-
ting from bending on the
stinger, it is possible that
a pipeline rotates in between its departure point
from the laybarge and the seabed. This rotation is
calculated with the help of a spreadsheet model.
To prevent an inline structure from rotating during
installation, buoyancy modules attached to yokes
are connected to the pipeline. The buoyancy modu-
les minimize rotation by exerting a torsion moment
on the pipe if it tends to rotate.
In a sense, the pipeline
rotation problem asso-
ciated with installation
of inline structures is
academic, because it is
not hampering pipelay-
ing thanks to the use of
the buoyancy modules.
However, it was decided to
develop further insight in
the rotation phenomenon
since this may ultima-
tely lead to omitting the bulky buoyancy modules.
Therefore the spreadsheet model was exercised and
results of the spreadsheet model calculations were
compared with results in literature. Main conclusion
was that the model predicted good results, albeit
consistently lower than those in literature.
During this research it was discovered that there
is little public literature available on the subject.
Comparisons had to be based
on a single public source.
Earlier research within Allseas
appeared to be documented
poorly if at all, and in many
cases the present study had
to rely on interviews of the
engineers who had been
working on the subject in the
past.
Other factors which were
thought to be responsible for pipeline rotation have
been investigated also. Linear elastic theory was
used to create models in Excel and Visual Basic. The
most important conclusions are that current forces
on an inline structure can not cause an important
rotation. Misalignment of the tensioner tracks, on
the contrary, may introduce substantial rotation
under certain circumstances.

Development of a compliant cone for solid tubular expansion
Oil and gas wells generally comprise several concen-
tric tubulars, the well casings. Inserting and subse-
quently expanding tubulars offer the opportunity
to clad the existing tubes, for instance to increase
strength and corrosion resistance or to replace
concentric casing pipes by expanded casing extensi-
ons, while maximizing the conduit diameter.
To enable such expandion technology it is manda-
tory to develop a tool that is capable to perform the
expansion process as well as to decreasein diameter
to bypass obstacles (like connectors in the outer
tubing) in such a way that the outer tubulars’ inte-
grity is not compromised. Simultaneously the tool
should be capable to return to the desired diameter
after passing through the obstacle.
The study focused on existing technology, possible
new concepts and the selection of a promising novel
tool. This selected tool has been designed to have
the appropriate geometry and functioning principles
and has subsequently been checked for loads and
stress levels based on geometry and theoretical
loads and friction factors.
Finally various laboratorium tests have been carried
out on fixed and compliant tools to test the working
principles and load levels. The latter have been
compared with the theoretical levels as calculated.
Although further –verification– testing remains to be
carried out, the results of the study and the tests of
the new design are promising.
