A very detailed well-illustrated history of the structural design evolution of the round-shaped airship hangar at Dresden designed by Ernst Meier and originally constructed in 1913 which, with its double-curvature revolving clamshell door, was to become an archetypal design for all subsequent streamlined airship hangars, including at Liegnitz and Poznan/Posen. Meier’s design was later adapted by Karl Arnstein for the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation Airdock at Akron, OH, the largest airship hangar ever constructed which was originally built in under seven months in 1929 for the ZRS-4 (USS Akron) and ZRS-5 (USS Macon) airships and was at the time the world’s largest structure without internal support. The book concludes with an architectural survey history of other airship hangars around the world, concluding with the CargoLifter project and a summary compilation of concise biographies of key personalities involved.
