Now we are finding most of our time is spent trying to track the funding from the Red Cross for individual businesses. They contact us because they have not received the money and I am happy to say that so far we have been able to reach out, find out why, and in some cases speed up the time it takes. We are also trying, using the information we have collected from businesses along with your feedback from your calls, to push for additional support. We understand that a Phase 2 may be coming. We are also going to launch a survey so that businesses can self-apply for us to get back to them. The survey is what we will now advertise in order to help our work load. BCEDA is also working to get the funding and the approvals from the Province to send in Economic Disaster Recovery Teams to communities. These are essential pieces of the recovery process. Community of Momentum Abbotsford Community has been successful in bringing two large events for 2019. September 2019 the National Student Leadership Conference will be touching down and in November 2019 & 2020 the Canadian Cross Country Championships will be running our way! Abbotsford events are seeing a trend in increased attendance. Community events are getting more and more folks out to enjoy and to connect – especially the free family events. As of September, there is a 20% increase in attendees/participants over 2016 numbers. I’m sure our wonderful summer weather helped but also the need for community connections! Red, White and YOU! An exciting Symphony Under the Stars performance with Calvin Dyck and the Vancouver Island Symphony followed by an epic Light Show took over Mill Lake park on August 10. Thousands came to enjoy a show - first time in Abbotsford - and what an impression was left! The live orchestra music along with the light show exceeded expectations. A memorable evening for folks to remember back on to where they were when celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday! We value partnerships! The community partners involved in bringing Canada’s special birthday to life are Prospera Credit Union, Government of Canada, Telus, Fraser Valley Food Truck Association, The Reach, FVRL, Twisters Gymnastics, Calvin Dyck and the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, Skipping Sensations, Agrifair, Castle Fun Park, Tourism Abbotsford, Columbia Cabinets, Early Years, Heritage Canada, 4Cats Studio, BCAA, Community Services, Abbotsford Mission Recycling, FraserWay RV, Abbotsford Arts Council and Celebration Fireworks.

Roving Exhibit The Abby Can 150 Roving Exhibit told the stories of nine historic locations in Abbotsford including Trethewey House, Clayburn Village, Mill Lake, Abbotsford Airport, Gur Sikh Temple and more. Residents were taken through a time machine to experience Abbotsford “Then and Now” featuring photos from the past and present to highlight how our community has changed from 1867-2017. As planned, the exhibit was launched in February and traveled to various locations throughout the city including The Reach, Trethewey House, Recreation centres, the airport, libraries, and local events. The exhibit was on display at more than 20 locations, and was seen by more than 50,000 people.

Relevant Notes from EDAC Conference Sessions:

BDC Chief Economist – Pierre Cleroux:

The 4th Industrial revolution is here – Are Canadian entrepreneurs ready? Digital technologies are revolutionizing the way manufacturers are operating and doing business. Industry 4.0 is the latest revolution. This is more transformational than ever before. This revolution will level the playing field globally and production costs around the world. Early Canadian adopters are seeing dramatic improvement in productivity, growth, consistent quality and customer satisfaction due to real time data and digital technologies. On average nationally, 39% of SMEs have already adopted digital technologies. BC’s average is slightly higher.

Early adopters are most positive about the future of their business. They are more profitable and are paying their workers higher salaries. This will lead to two classes of businesses and workers. The gap between adopters and non is growing. Adopters will survive.

Challenges:

#1 challenge going forward will be getting technology talent.

There will be more people working in technology outside the tech sector than in it!

#2 Obtaining financing for the latest technologies.

Traditional financing has being for equipment – tangible assets. A change of thinking from lenders will be needed to support technology advancements to support non-tangible assets.

#3 Employee resistance to change and re-skilling.

Blue collar jobs are gone. All workers will need to have skills in the new world. Employers need to do a better job of re-training/skilling of their workforce to avoid not being left behind

Recent survey of businesses completed by BDC shows that private sector has heard this message loud and clear and in the allocation of expenditures training, has increased from #22 a few years ago. Top three below:

#1 Technology

#2 Training

#3 Equipment

Economic Developers need to advocate and raise awareness of the benefits of adopting technology. Use other companies as examples of successful adopters. Remember robots are a tool; they’re designed by and operated by humans! In the future, as all householders have a hammer – all will have a robot.

Other notes of interest:

Globalization of the world and free trade will continue. Brexit and NAFTA issues are short term referred to as a ‘temporary bump’

NAFTA:

USA does have a huge trade deficit BUT trade with Canada is NOT the problem. Trade with Canada is balanced export/imports $400 vs $390 Bn

What will happen is unknown however; if NAFTA falls apart Canada and the USA will revert back to the original FTA which has never been change. This would not result in a major change to the Canadian economy; yes there will be some impacts however not hugely significant.

IF the FTA fall apart WTO tariffs will apply. This will really hurt the Canadian economy. BDC’s Chief Economist feels this would be extremely unlikely happen.

Ontario Investment Office presentation:

New provincial focused investment office has recently opened. With a mandate to be customer-focused, best in class and attract to Ontario. They consider their priorities to be as follows:

1. Keep the businesses that they already have 2. How can they help companies to go global 3. FDI

They recognize the importance of agriculture to the Ontario economy and are aware it is consistently their first or second GDP.

Canada:

We are all facing an issue with obtaining skilled labour.

Question: Amazon RFP

They are looking at this RFP; trying to get an understanding of what Amazon wants and is looking for. Their criteria are global. They will look for ‘matches’ province wide and discuss provincially what incentives they would be willing to offer. Amazon will be shortlisting their options by Oct 19th.

FDI by Numbers – Making Data Work; Research on Investment (ROI):

ROI has 6 Offices throughout North America (Montreal is Canadian HQ). Now more than ever, communities of all sizes need to be increasingly resourceful and innovative in generating opportunities for investment and diversification. By understanding the driving motivations for overseas expansions as well as key barriers and challenges, communities can be more targeted in articulating their value proposition and better position themselves to attract investment.

Need to be specific, targeted and focused. Last census is too old – not relevant. Need to understand the signals that can be read that a business is ready to expand some of which may include:

Change in c-level staffing

Recruitment of senior resources in non-traditional markets

Expansion trends over the past 5-years

Spike in job posting intensity

Web site translation

Spike in social web activity

Increased energy loads

Patent applications

New/changed addresses

ROI have developed GAZELLE.AI software platform that data crawls from 2000 factors of growth and publications to identify growth, using millions of data points and advanced algorithms. They also interview thousands of C-suite professionals annually to specifically curate the opportunities. Gazelle.ai is a one-stop business intelligence and lead generation

Go Forth Institute: Leslie McGeough, President and Founder (the first female to obtain a Ph.d in Entrepreneurship)

Dr McGeough shared her insight into what it takes to build economic and community capacity in Canada – one small business at a time. Leslie highlighted that with 2.5 million entrepreneurs in Canada; 50% are lost in the first five years. By studying success factors and condensing these into the top 100 factors, Go Forth Institute seeks to solve this problem by providing entrepreneurs with business skillset development as a key to start and grow a successful small business, create sustainable jobs, social innovation and net economic capacity; improving the odds of success.

Go Forth Institute has become a leading provider of online small business training; 90% of entrepreneurs’ embarking upon the training is completing the course. 150 Organizations across Canada are now partnered with Go Forth to deliver their online business training within their communities. These have included enterprise centres and some community future organizations.

EDAC has become the 150th partner organization with Go Forth and will slowly start rolling this out across the membership. As a board member early access has been provided to me. This access will allow our department to review all of their training materials, enabling us to share this knowledge source with Abbotsford. Once a review has been completed staff looks forward to sharing this with the committee.

Go Forth are now starting to work with building foundational level elements to enable these to be brought into elementary and Junior High schools and enable early skills development.
