  • Kingspan Wind, our history

    KW3 & KW6 Small Wind Turbines • Stand Alone Installations • Micro-Grid Applications • Hybrid Solutions

Kingspan Wind has been a market leader in Off-Grid energy solutions since 1989 We have many world firsts when it comes to innovation in Off-Grid developments • A worlds first in Antarctica (Cold climate option) • Worlds largest Off-Grid Fleet (Falkland Islands) • Oil & Gas Platforms (First Small Turbine ATEX approval) • Specialists in Telecoms (Bespoke voltage generation) • Rural Electrification of remote access areas

    Kingspan Wind Pioneers in Off-Grid

  • Rotor Design

    Normal Operation Extreme Winds

Blades are held in pre set start position

  • OFF-GRID SOLUTIONS – LETS KEEP IT SIMPLE!

    • Downwind Design • Unique passive speed and power control • No active yaw control required - wind turbines automatically turn with the wind • Maintenance free generator (no moving electrical parts) • Use of direct-drive generator and thus no gearbox • 54-70 m/s survival wind speeds - designed to Class 1 • No requirement to brake in high winds!

    KEY FEATURES

  • +5,000 Global Installations

INNOVATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS POWERED BY KINGSPAN WIND

  • Hybrid Power Solutions

IDEAL FOR OFFGRID APPLICATIONS By combining wind and solar energy with battery storage and a back up diesel generator a very robust energy source is created. APPLICATIONS • Telecommunications • Military • Industrial/Railways • International Aid • Desalination

BENEFITS • On-site energy generation. • Low service and maintenance requirements. • Provide independence of national grid. • Cost reduction in diesel transportation logistics FEATURES • Can be designed as battery charge, mini and micro-grids, energy storage or to provide hot water to a whole host of applications. • Available in several voltage configurations.

EX & Marine Wind Turbines for Oil & Gas Offshore Environments

BASED ON THE KW3 & KW6 optimised for the harsh environment experienced off-shore

KW3 EX TURBINE • First ATEX certified small turbine in the world • ATEX rating achieved using an innovative slip-ring enclosure to encapsulate any potential sparks • Developed for use in the North Sea • Installed for several years on un-manned gas platforms • Additional specification designed to ensure maximum environmental protection

KINGSPAN MARINE TURBINE • Enhanced Environmental Performance - without ATEX approvals • Options to tailor battery charging systems

Cutter Platform - North Sea (KW3 EX)

  • Antarctica

Princess Elisabeth Research Station - Antarctica

SOLUTION: 9 Kingspan KW6 Turbines installed to generate electricity to power station researching climate change The first Zero Emission polar research station, was officially inaugurated on the 15th of February 2009. 9 x Kingspan KW6 wind turbines help to provide renewable off-grid power to the station, demonstrating the durability and robustness of the Kingspan Wind turbines and the unique public / private partnership that made it possible for the station to become an international reference point, both in terms of environmental management and support of polar science.

“The turbines have been designed for the extreme weather we get. They have been working spectacularly well!”

  • Case Study Falkland Islands

INNOVATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS POWERED BY KINGSPAN WIND

    THE CHALLENGE

100% of ALL RURAL PROPERTIES POWERED BY DIESEL GENERATORS The Falkland Islands has over 140 remote homes and farms and had no access to the electrical grid. In the mid 90’s, a renewable energy programme was launched by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation to research alternative energy sources. LOCAL GOVERNMENT NEEDED A SOLUTION TO HELP PRESERVE THE RURAL WAY OF LIFE AND TO SUPPORT DIVERSIFICATION IN AGRICULTURE

    Rural Energy was 100%

    Diesel Powered

  • Case Study Falkland Islands

INNOVATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS POWERED BY KINGSPAN WIND

Following a 12 month field trial. FIDC opted for the Kingspan turbine range due to it’s low servicing requirement and high wind capability A 50% GRANT WAS MADE AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT THE UPTAKE OF SMALL WIND • Now 90% of Rural Power is provided from Kingspan Small Scale Wind Turbines • Population has increased in rural areas

    • 130 Kingspan turbines operating on the islands

    • 21 Years of Successful Rural Energy Scheme

    • Stand Alone & Mini-Grid Applications deployed across the islands

    THE SOLUTION

  • ISLE OF EIGG – SCOTLAND

  • THE ISLE OF EIGG – ISLAND LIFE

UNDERSTANDING EIGG The Isle of Eigg is a Scottish Island within the Inner Hebrides. A remote Island with no interconnection to the mainland of Scotland.

    • 16km to the nearest mainland coast

    • 9km from North to South

    • 5km from East to West

    • 90 residents

    • 6 Community Buildings

    • 45 Households

    • 26 Businesses

    .

  • THE CHALLENGE

THE ENERGY CHALLENGE The Isle of Eigg had no mains electric or mains gas and was completely isolated from the modern way of life

    • Homes powered with Diesel Generators

    • No Power at Night

    • No infrastructure for business

    • Homes often lit by Candles

  • THE CONSIDERATIONS

    DESIGNING A MICRO-GRID

The Isle of Eigg power demand can fluctuate and will require a power source that can function day and night throughout the seasons.

The design of the micro-grid must take the following into consideration:

    • Medium Voltage Capacity

    • Store Surplus Energy

    • Operate 24 Hour’s a Day

    • Provide Cost Effective Energy

    • Reduce Diesel Reliance

    • Ease of Maintenance

    .

  • THE COMPLETE GRID

    THE EIGG ELECTRIC GRID

    CHOSEN SYSTEM • Hydro (110 kW) • Wind (24 kW) • Solar (55 kWp)

These power sources are distributed and coupled by a medium voltage grid over 11 kilometres

  • THE SYSTEM

    • Small Scale Wind Kingspan Wind KW6 x 4

    • Hydro Power 110kW Capability

    • Solar Power 55kWp Capability

  • Isle of Eigg – A Community Success

    SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

    • 95% Electricity from Renewables

    • Proven ‘Off-Grid’ Concept

    • No problems with critical loads

    • Populations is now Growing

    • Domestic Power available at 5kW

    • Business Power available at 10kW

    • Significant Diesel cost reduction

    • Environmentally Friendly Electricity
