SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE… Just about everywhere I go these days here at Airport Community Schools I see the word “PRIDE”. I walk into the high school cafeteria and see “Airport Pride”, I walk into the elementary schools and see “Jet Pride”, even when some of the employees send an email their signature has “Jet Pride” printed underneath it. Pride is a simple word but it has a huge impact on our school and community. The powerful thing about pride, or being proud, is that it can be applied to just about any aspect of our lives. Pride can be exhibited by our staff, our students, and how we treat our community and visitors. Our community exhibits pride by supporting our school with their presence at our events, financial support, and speaking highly of our schools. Here are some examples that I see every single day that demonstrates all of our pride at Airport. Airport Staff When our employees work hard so our students can be as successful as possible When our buildings, hallways, and grounds are safe and neatly kept When workers show up to work on time and with a good attitude When people are smiling, happy, and welcome visitors When our staff welcomes parents and visitors no matter what the situation

Airport Students When students report to school on time ready to learn When students dress appropriately for school and success When students treat adults and other students respectfully When students speak and use language that is appropriate in school

Airport Community Support at our school events like parent/teacher conferences, concerts, and athletics Working with school staff in motivating students to do their best Understanding the mission of our schools

Next time you’re at school take a look around. Take notice of all the pride that our staff, students, and community exhibit each day. Not just the printed words on the walls or emails, but the proud way that the people at school carry themselves. It is a great time to be proud to be an Airport Jet. Sincerely, John J. Krimmel, IV

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A STORY! Mrs. Dyl's second grade class at Ritter Elementary is looking for community members to share a good story with the class. If you are interested in story tell-ing or reading one of your favorite books to some 7-8 year old students, we would love to have you visit. Please remember to choose a short story (10 minutes long).

The second graders will be learning about our local community in Social Studies, so it would be great to have people come in from the area. Our story time is at 12:45 daily. We can't wait to hear your story!

Contact Mrs. Dyl at 379-5335 to schedule your visit.

AIRPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL BE “NO PLACE FOR HATE” SCHOOLS

Sterling Elementary students and staff are proud to announce that they are working towards becoming a “No Place for Hate” school! No Place for Hate is an initiative from the Anti-Defamation League that is taking place throughout Michigan and other cities across the nation. The goal is to reduce bullying and name calling, while creating safer learning environments that promote inclusion, appreciation of diversity and respect for others.

On Friday, September 9, 2011 students attended a “Kick Off” assembly. Harry Weaver from ADL came and spoke to the students about “No Place for Hate”. Deputy Francisco talked about different types of bullying, and Krista Bree, School Principal, told the students what will be expected of them. Students then watched an awesome video, created by Kindergarten teacher, Laura Shingle. The video highlighted bullying situations and then went to acts of kindness and friendship.

In order to be a “No Place for Hate” school, Sterling students and staff signed a Resolution of Respect. This resolution states:

*I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly. *I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone – even if they are not like me. *If I see someone being hurt or bullied I will report it to an adult. *Everyone should be able to feel safe and happy at school. *I want our school to be No Place for Hate.

Students have signed their resolution and they are hanging in the Sterling lobby to serve as a reminder. They also recite this every morning after the Pledge of Allegiance. Throughout the school year, Sterling students and staff will participate in activities that celebrate diversity and /or address bias, bullying, and name calling. CONGRATULATIONS TO EYLER SUMMER READING WINNERS

We want to congratulate the students who participated in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge at Eyler. The top readers from each class are Ava Dupuie, Emma Ford, Molly Lambrix, Tim Jorgen-sen, Rachel Reifsnider, Delaney Ratliff, Jade Hill, Kylee Escue, and Max Jorgensen. On September 23, they each got a chance to throw a cream pie at Mr. Roberts. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Mr. Roberts for being a good sport.

ELEMENTARY LIBRARIES Exciting things are happening at the Airport Community Schools elementary libraries. New books have been processed over the summer for all three buildings and are on display. Students in grades 2-5 should begin bringing home books this month. K-1 students will have a bit more time to get used to the library and how to check books out before they check items out. Books will check out for one week and students will need to bring books back to the library on their library day (yet to be determined as of this print-ing). Students will be allowed to renew books.

The library at Ritter has had a wonderful face lift thanks to a generous donation from the Ritter PTO. Ritter students were greeted this school year with bright new carpets, new books and signage that will help us all locate books in the library. Thank you Ritter PTO!

PTO NEWS

RITTER PTO On Wednesday, August 31st, the Ritter school year kicked off with a welcome back breakfast for all Ritter teachers sponsored by the Ritter PTO. Ritter is so privileged to have such a wonder-ful staff! Thank you to the new Ritter PTO Treasurer, Michelle Frey for shopping and setting up this special event! The fabulous day continued with the annual Open House picnic. Ritter families contributed side dishes and desserts to go along with the hot dogs provided by NNPS. If attendance was an indicator of howa community comes together, then Ritter has set the bar high! Parents, grandparents, kids and staff enjoyed a welcoming in the gym by Principal Mrs. Terry Brown who also organized this fun filled evening. Then everyone was invited to tour the school. Students were thrilled to find out who their teachers were, see friends and staff and check out the new building improvements. Thank you to Amy Cote, Ritter Librarian for utilizing the $12,000 that the Ritter PTO donated to have the library ready to go.

September 12th thru the 16th Ritter was a sea of Patriotism. In remembrance of 09/11 and to honor all of our troops, Deb Miller, Ritter 4th grade teacher, organized a Patriotic Spirit Week. Throughout the week all Ritter students and staff were encour-aged to wear Red, White and Blue, create cards for the troops and donate items to the troops. On Friday, September 16th the 3 most patriotic classes were rewarded with red, white & blue popsicles! Donations for the troops and names of servicemen and woman are being collected at Ritter. Friday, September 16th was also Ritter's' Popcorn Friday kick off. Thank you to the parent volunteers. This wouldn't be a success without you. The Ritter children always enjoy this treat! The NED show came to Ritter on Wednesday, September 14th. What a spectacular assembly and message! Never give up! Encourage Others! And Do your best!!! It has been an awesome first month of school! STERLING PTO School year 2011-2012 is here and Sterling PTO welcomes all families and staff! PTO met students and families at Open House where each received a Sterling calendar magnet. We welcomed staff back with a yummy breakfast and goodie bags. Sterling's first assembly of the year was on the topic of bullying and featured a magician who relayed Sterling's theme as 'No Place for Hate' to the students. Over the summer PTO watched the wall murals being painted, a new basketball hoop going up, and several other projects take shape. What we are looking forward to this fall:

EYLER PTO The Eyler PTO kicked off the 2011-2012 school year at Open House on September 8, 2011. With new officers President Jill Gifford (former secretary), Vice President Robyn Pitock, Treasurer Jessica Kull, and Secretary Michelle McCoy, the PTO was ready to begin a great school year. We introduced new Airport Spirit Wear during Open House and held our first meeting immediately following. We had a great turn out and many parents signed up to volunteer for future PTO activities.

The fall calendar is quickly filling up at Eyler. First up was Spirit Week to celebrate Airport’s Homecoming that was held on September 23rd. The kids had a great time mix matching their clothes, wearing animal prints, being a “twin”, wearing pajamas to school, and of course wearing their blue and gold! Once again Eyler’s PTO walked in the Homecoming Parade. We were so proud of all our students and parents who came out to show their support. The children enjoyed being involved in the parade and throwing candy into the crowd. Go Jets!!

The fall Fundraiser will kick off in October this year. We will once again be selling products from the Frankenmuth Company. Please help support the PTO by purchasing from our Fundraiser. The money we raise from this allows the Eyler student’s to participate in numerous fun activities and assemblies. The 2nd annual Eyler Trunk or Treat will take place on Thursday October 27th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Eyler families are invited to wear their Halloween costumes and come and trick or treat with the Eyler PTO and Staff.

This year the PTO will be hosting three book fairs. The money raised from book fairs help teachers build their classroom libraries. Our first book fair will be the week of November 2nd. The book fair will be open during school hours for students to shop and again after school for parents to stop by. Please come and check out all of the great offerings at the book fair.

This year the PTO, with the help of teacher Gina Russell, will be hosting Movie Nights. Our first Movie Night will be held on November 18th. We are looking forward to a fun night with students and their families.

Please make sure to go through your child’s Friday folder every week. The PTO is always looking for volunteers to help in the many activities we do for the students. We encourage you to come to the PTO meetings. They are held the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm. Future meetings: Oct. 4, Nov. 8, and Dec. 6. We are looking forward to an exciting 2011-2012 school year! Submitted by Michelle McCoy, Secretary

AHS YEARBOOK STAFF IS HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES

Many of the yearbook staff members attended the Herff Jones FUNd’mentals camp at Michigan State University to further their education and start creating their 2012 yearbook. The six students that attended the camp worked diligently in their classes including, Yearbook 101, Complete Yearbook, and Photography where they were taught the guidelines and rules to produce another great book. This year’s theme for the yearbook is The Time of Our Lives. This theme was taken from an end of the year exam in the 2011 class by a returning staff member, Junior Savannah Joslin. The theme is meant to be bold with a little touch of elegance and the staff members look forward to expanding their theme throughout the book. While having a blast getting to know each other and making a mock-up of their new yearbook, this incredible staff along with their advisor, Mrs. Laurie Rousse, was given the Bronze Medal for their theme packet. Caitlin Taylor and Jon Kelly also won individual awards for their excellence. The Yearbook Staff is looking forward to a successful year, with Editors, Ian Holtz and Samantha Villarreal, and staff members including Seniors Shelby Angilley, Samantha Bromley, Brianna Joslin, and Jon Kelly; Juniors Savannah Joslin, Ian Leach, and Caitlin Taylor, Sophomores Bethany Corne, Emily Preadmore, Madison Tallerico, and Chloe Wickenheiser.

YEARBOOK INFORMATION: Yearbooks will be sold a little differently but much more conveniently this upcoming year. They will be sold for $60.00. Year-books will only be sold at school during Parent-Teacher Conferences and the week of conferences. During those times cash, checks, and credit will be accepted. After the week of parent-teacher conferences the yearbook price will increase to $65.00 and will only be available to purchase online until the December holiday break. There will only be a few extra yearbooks ordered, so to ensure you get a book you must order early. Those extra books will be sold as

cash and carry for $75.00.

Yearbooks will be sold online September thru December – prices starting at $60, but will increase after the week following Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you do not have a computer feel free to come to the school library and order there. Information will be provided at orientation and in the mail.

If you have any questions or would like to support the yearbook by buying a business ad please contact Laurie Rousse at [email protected].

THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS EXCITING HAPPENINGS TO WAGAR All Wagar students were given a school planner at the beginning of the school year. The planner has the school code of conduct, daily planning guide to help students stay on top of their studies, important facts and formulas for different subjects, and other sections that just make students’ lives a little better.

The 8th grade students had their scavenger hunt on Oct. 6th and 7th. This activity is a team building activity . Kevin Hileman, Wagar Counselor, organizes this with the help of the 8th grade staff. This activity took place outdoors.

The National Honor Society is once again collecting pop can tops to benefit Ronald McDonald House, Box tops for Education, and Campbell soup labels.

The Wagar Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country teams are off to a great start. Wagar will once again be competing in the County-Wide Quiz Bowl for grades 7th and 8th. We will also be conducting a Spelling Bee in which our winners will compete with the rest of the county schools. Information on these competitions will come available soon.

NIEDERMEIER CENTER FOR EDUCATION History teacher, Adam Sakel, brought a hands-on experience to the study of history.

As part of Mr. Sakel’s Foundations Unit in US History, students are acting as the jury that has to decide the fate of British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre. Students have examined original trial documents, historic maps, and participated in a hands-on seminar in British infantry tactics. This case was the celebrity trial of its time and highlights America’s long tradition of basic rights and liberties. At the time of publication, the jury had yet to render its decision. EQUESTRIAN TEAM WINS DISTRICT TITLE On September 25th, Airport’s Equestrian Team won the District Title for the second year in a row. Competing in Division C, against seven other teams, Airport’s team consisting of two sophomores, Darrien Young and Nicole Huntsman and Senior Samantha Bromley pulled ahead during the final meet to take first place from Grosse Ile with an incredible 110 points! To add to the excitement they were awarded the Sportsman-ship Trophy. This trophy is voted on by all 24 teams and awarded to the team demonstrating strong sportsmanship throughout the meets. The team competed at Regionals on September 30th at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds. (At the time of publication, we do not know their standings.) Coached by Judi Pershing and Assistant Coach Ryan Ely, a past team member, the team hopes to make it all the way to States. Submitted by Coach Judi Pershing
