Mr. Nourse

FROM THE PRINCIPALFROM THE PRINCIPAL

When the British withdrew from the Arabian Gulf many thought that the vacuum left would be filled by an aggressive hostile power. The London TIMES wrote “As a hugely wealthy country that possessed no real self defence capabilities, it is bound to attract the coveting ambitions of its

The great thing about the 1970’s in the UK apart from flared trousers, decimalisation and ‘Bony M’ was that usually you had about 3 choices for everything. On television you had BB1, BBC2 and ITV - for breakfast you had toast, boiled egg, or porridge - and for holidays you could a) Stay at home, b) Go to the Grandparents c) Camp in a wet field for a week. These days choice has become an industry in its own right. If you order a chicken sandwich in certain places you can choose from organic, free range, corn fed, wheat free, well educated, speaks three languages and reduces your cholesterol! You get the point. I’m all for diversity but let’s please keep things simple. Options in life have become just as terrifying as a menu in a Covent Garden Bistro.

This week we have launched the Year 9 iGCSE Options where pupils are choosing which subjects they will be examined on in May 2017. Students can expect to take around 10 subjects which can lead them onto Year 12 and Year 13 studies of the IB Diploma Program or ‘A’ Level exams. The choice at first seems daunting but they are guided through the process by experienced teachers who have travelled this path many times before. They ask students to consider their strengths and keep a fairly broad base of subjects because experience tells them students change their minds about future goals and career paths - which is totally normal. The most important factor is to really stay focused and apply yourselves to the subjects and courses offered. After all employers are really after the following:

TOO MUCH CHOICE?

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

NEWS FROM FS2This month in FS2 we were visited by a DINOSAUR!!! The children were very excited and followed dinosaur footprints through our classroom and outside. The dinosaur made a big mess and we have decided to set a trap to catch him.

We have set up an exciting learning opportunity for the children and we would appreciate your help in supporting this. We are learning about instructions for the next few weeks and as a way of making the learning purposeful and exciting we set up a dinosaur trail. The children have learnt to orally retell instructions on ‘How to Catch a Dinosaur’. The children will be making traps, sequencing instructions, making fossils and writing instructions. We are really looking forward to the next few weeks and cannot wait to see what the dinosaur will do next.

NEWS FROM FS1

A HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!

What a very wet start to 2015 – hope you have enjoyed it as much as the children have! As you know our Topic this term is “Tell Me a Story”. The children will be listening to many stories over the next few weeks. So far we have read “Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. We have thought about the days of the week and what we do on those days – the children were very excited to use Mr. Hill’s photograph twice! The children have also listened with interest to the Life Cycle of the caterpillar and know that it starts with an egg, then a caterpillar, then a cocoon and finally a beautiful butterfly.

As you know we have begun to learn more English letter sounds (not names!) and we are in lots of different groups. Each week we will learn new letters and we hope that you will practice this at home with the children to. They will have great fun singing the letter songs to you as well as showing you the actions. We are still improving our Listening Skills too and have fun rhyming and listening to words that begin with the same sound.

In Mathematics we are beginning to think about ‘how many altogether’ i.e. the first stages of adding 2 small groups. One way we did this was to count altogether the number of caterpillars on 2 leaves.

Just a few dates for your diary – we are running our very successful Parents to Play sessions again this term.

Al Foah – Wednesday 28th January

Al Salamat – Wednesday 4th February

Sarooj – Wednesday 4th March

We understand that for working parents this can be hard to attend but we try and give as much notice as possible so that you might be able to book the time off work. If not, ANY member of the family can come – grandparents, aunties, older sisters, nannies – we love to see everyone.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We have been looking at shapes and estimating in Maths and a working very hard on some scary Shape Dinosaurs. The children have really loved our story “Harry and the Dinosaurs have a very busy day” and liked searching for shapes with their shape finder cards.

We are looking forward to our Dino Disco (Date TBC) and using the cooking room to make some special prehistoric treats.

FS2 love our new topic we think dinosaurs are roar-some!

Look at what the dinosaur did!

We learnt actions to help us retell our instructions on how to catch a dinosaur.

NEWS FROM YEAR 2

After the winter holidays, Year 2 have come back to school raring to go, ready to learn and FIGHTING FIT! Our topic this term is ‘Fighting Fit,’ so we have been spending the first few weeks testing our fitness, learning about a balanced diet and how we can keep ourselves and our bodies healthy.

In Science, we began by designing a fitness test in small groups and then tested this with our partners. We had some very interesting fitness levels across the year group! This will be revisited at the end of the topic to see if we have got any more fitter by living more healthily as our topic homework asks you to show. We have also investigated the effects of some of our favourite drinks on our teeth (or egg shells!), using other substances to protect our teeth so that we can compare the effects.

In our topic lessons, we have been learning about the different food groups and their function in helping our bodies. We also know that we need to have a balanced diet, involving some of all food groups…but the right amount of each! We then used our knowledge to design and make a ‘healthy food plate.’

Our Literacy work has been linked with our topic. We have read the story of ‘Oliver’s vegetables’ and completed many related tasks, including using the IPads to create mood boards for the story. We have had some fantastic ideas about what being healthy is. Here are some of our mood boards.

NEWS FROM YEAR 1

The beginning of a new term brings new challenges and more opportunities for amazing learning in Year 1. The children have been excited with the introduction of our new topic this term, ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. Children will visit the zoo and take part in a ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ theme art day.

In Literacy we have been exploring stories from a range of cultures based around our new topic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. Children will read stories from different cultures and begin to write their own stories developing their writing skills.

In Maths we have been focussing on counting, partitioning, calculating and number work. Children have enjoyed exploring number patterns and are beginning to develop their number skills.

NEWS FROM YEAR 4NEWS FROM YEAR 3

What a fantastic start to 2015 the Year 3 children have had! We’ve certainly hit the ground running and have gotten straight into our new topic of ‘Trash to Treasure’. The children are fascinated with the content and are doing everything they can to help with recycling. The teachers were proud that the children came up with the idea of having a toy sale, to not only help with the charity ‘Operations Smile’, but to also secure their knowledge of money. Remember to bring any used toys, games or books to Miss Bold’s classroom before Tuesday 3rd February.

There was more fun and practical activities taking place in maths lessons last week. A Treasure Map game was set up in the flag courtyard, where the children had to use their knowledge of coordinates to find the ancient treasure map under one of the tiles. It was great to see the children being so enthused about their maths lesson.

More practical learning has been taking place in the science lessons. Our topic of ‘Characteristics of Materials’ lends itself to lots of great experiments, with the first one kicking off to the children answering the question: Which floor surface in school is the bounciest? The children successfully planned and carried out an experiment to try and find the answer to the question. They then looked at the properties of those floor materials to see what it is that makes it bouncy or not bouncy.

A fantastic first month back Year 3! Who said learning can’t be fun eh?!

The term has started very well for all of us in Year 4. The children have responded well to the many and varied challenges that have been put in front of them. In Literacy we have been looking at writing historical stories. Children have been encouraged to write descriptive pieces with exciting story openers. This term’s first topic, Trading Places, has provided children with inspiration for their story writing. We have looked at the stories of explorers, such as Eric the Red and William Gooch. The children have been fascinated to learn about some of the exploits of Eric the Red and indeed his son Leif. We have had some fascinating conversations about who really discovered America first. The children have also been learning how to analyse different historical sources of information.

The children have enjoyed beginning to find out more about the world around us. During their Science lessons they have been introduced to different types of rocks and their characteristics. They have also begun to look at the different layers of the Earth and how these influence our local and global environments. We also used eggs to represent the different layers of the Earth especially thinking about the crust and how small it is in relation to the core.

We hope to organize a week of drama later this term where the children will focus on speaking and listening activities, using our computing skills to produce short films, along with spending time in the kitchen cooking up delights.

We are looking forward to our upcoming residential to Umm Al Quwaim, if you are interested in coming along then please complete and return the permission slip along with the deposit.

As part of the ‘Trash to Treasure’ topic, the children are designing and making something completely out of recycled materials. This will then be showcased in a fashion show for parents to come and enjoy. Watch this space for the upcoming date! Please remember to bring in your recycled materials to ensure you can start the fun process of making your items in your art lessons.

NEWS FROM YEAR 6

This month in Science Year 6 have started looking at how we separate soluble and insoluble materials. We have started with filters for cleaning up the insoluble parts of dirty water. Students were given some resources: cotton wool, sand and small stones. They then had to construct their own filter and try to clean the insoluble parts of the dirty water. Some students really engaged with the learning thinking about how best to use the cotton wool and what other materials they could add to the filter.

Year 4 are looking at famous explorers and then specializing by looking at exploration in the gulf. They are learning about the Arabic dhow and the pearl trade. We will be studying local Artists’ including Martin Giesen and Judi Barrett. Pupils will be sketching sailing boats from around the world and developing these into more detailed illustrations using ink and dip pen. Pupils will design and develop their own dhow and sunset composition using water colours and oil pastels.

Mangahigh Mathematicians!

Our Secondary mathematicians have started the new term with a high level of enthusiasm for their studies. Last term our mathematics department purchaseed a new resource that adds a new ‘game-based learning’ dimension to our students studies in mathematics - Mangahigh (https://www.mangahigh.com). This online learning platform enables teachers to incorporate maths-based games into both lessons and home learning activities. Another beneficial aspect of the platform is the creation of regional (MENA), school and class level leaderboards that lets the student compete to realise their true potential in mathematics. AAIS has made staggering progress in terms of its position in MENA and at the time of writing we are currently 5th in the area.

The students have responded very positively to this new resource, and if you would like anymore information on its use in our pedagogy please do not hesitate to contact Mr Turner ([email protected]) who would be happy to organise a demonstration of the software’s main features.

NEWS FROM SECONDARY

The Whittaker family has been a part of Al Ain society for around five and a half years, having arrived here from Saudi Arabia and, prior to living in Saudi Arabia, the family lived in Thailand. Having arrived here, the whole family set about finding somewhere where they could enjoy their favourite pastime: golf.

Daniel, in Year 7 at Al Ain International School, comments: “For me, golf is a very easy game – it’s like I am made to play golf. My dad helps me with my game and although he is a good player, sometimes I can beat him. My dad is passionate about the game of golf and it is he who has always told me to keep on going with my golf and not give up. He is one of my inspirations – and Seve Ballesteros is my other inspiration. My parents have always taught me that, to be the best at something, you have to keep working at it and keep going, even when it is hard. Whether or not my parents are with me, I try to think of them and what they might say to me wherever I am.

As for golf, I love it because it is a challenging and hard game. I want to be as good as Seve because whenever I watch him play I feel inspired to do something with my golf and my life.

At school I enjoy PE, Science, ICT and English. Without school you wouldn’t be able to be good at golf. It requires a lot of thinking and maths. I think that I would like to be a professional golfer when I am older – and this may well be possible if I keep playing well. I am very grateful to my parents for all they do for me. I am also happy to play golf for the school team and I find it good that I can play with other good golfers from Al Ain International School – like Lewis, Leia, Peter and Sakura.”

As for Peter, his role was pivotal in last week’s inter-school golf tournament. Al Ain International School won First Place – again – securing victory easily against Al Ain English Speaking School and Brighton College’s teams.

Congratulations therefore to Daniel in Year 7 and Peter in Year 5 for their recent golfing successes. We follow their golfing journeys with interest, certain that they are golfing stars in the making!

For those who know a little something about golf, this is a phenomenal score – and saw Daniel breaking the previous Club record for the Par 3 Course – and this at the age of twelve! As for his brother, Peter, he came Second in the competition – making this a double victory for the brothers.

Thankfully, the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club was perfect (according to Daniel) and they have been a regular feature on the golfing scene since their arrival here.

For the Whittakers, January began with two victories on the golfing green. On the second weekend of the New Year Daniel came First Place in the GROSS Competition at the Al Ain Golf Club with an amazing score of 26 (that’s 1 under par).

Peter & Daniel with their trophies!

Wonderful Whittakers Win Again!

NEWS FROM SECONDARY

In partnership with Mubadalla, Aldar set a challenge to us as part of Sustainability Week in our schools. This challenge actually linked with several of our curriculum topics for the term and so there was much excitement as the students set about responding to the task.

The Task: each student or teams of 3-5 students were challenged to:

• build a model of a sustainable home,

• present a 2 minute verbal presentation,

• and have to create a poster board to support and highlight their reasoning and decision-making process.

Key Issues and Concepts to be considered : sustainability, an overview of various biomes, renewable energy, the importance of conservation, the features of a sustainable house.

Objectives: at the end of the project students developed: an understanding of the concept of sustainability; enhanced their vocabulary on sustainability issues; a greater understanding around the topic of energy; their learning about their local environment (Abu Dhabi); their learning about other biomes around the world and were able to compare and contrast sustainability issues.

Needless to say, our students worked so hard on this project and managed to learn many new skills as part of achieving the objectives. We were so impressed with the results of their labours. Well done to all concerned!

NEWS FROM SECONDARYTwenty Four Hours in the Life of

Maria Benhammouda

I was born in Abu Dhabi. My family lived there before moving to Al Ain. My father has a Doctorate in mathematics and teaches in one of the Higher Technology Colleges in Al Ain. My mother used to teach French and now works hard in keeping our family well looked after. I live with my parent, two brothers and two sisters and my ambition is to be a medical Doctor in the future. I have never really liked maths but, when I came to this school I enjoyed Mangahigh Maths with Mr Turner and now really want to do well in it. My father is very pleased with this!

I really enjoy being at Al Ain International School. It is so different from the other schools that I have attended. For example, in Science we do real experiments, in Art we work with so many different materials and learn about so many different artists and techniques, and in English we learn about different poetry and stories and get to write our own. My favourite subjects are Science, Maths, English, Art and Drama. I enjoy my Tutor Group too – they are so funny to be with but they work hard. I guess that what I like most here is that the secondary teachers make learning fun for us. My friends at school make me smile every day – this makes me really want to come to school every day. Our Tutor Group is like a family.

Usually, when I finish school on a Thursday, I arrive home and then I will eat with the family. My mother is a really good cook and I am so happy when she cooks couscous or pizza or strawberry cheesecake. It is very important for us to sit and eat together; we are a close family and we try to look after each other.

After we eat I make sure that I try to complete any homework that I need to do before ending the evening enjoying time with the family. My older brother comes over from Dubai most Thursdays and it’s good when he is home since he has a great sense of humour.

On Fridays I normally wake up, have a shower and then clean up my room before I go and help mum downstairs with whatever she needs to do. Our Fridays are special because it’s our day off from work – it’s our family day; we also read the Qura’an. Sometimes we go out as a family to a mall, usually Bawadi Mall; we like it there because it has the shops that we like visiting. Sometimes we spend Fridays at home – and when we do this I will make sure that I spend some of the day exercising; it’s important to stay healthy. In fact, my New Year Resolution is to exercise every day and to be careful about what I eat. I can still eat pizza and strawberry cheesecake – just one slice or each perhaps, instead of four! It’s all about eating sensibly.

I always try to spend time with my younger sister on Friday evenings. We will play games together or watch a movie together. One of my favourite films is Nanny McPhee because it is so funny. I also like The Maze Runner because it has loads of action in it and has a really interesting storyline. Before I go to sleep I will try to read. I am currently reading ‘The Twins at St Clare’s’ – a book written by Enid Blyton a long time ago; Mrs Roderick tells me that she read it when she was my age! I think that I need to read more English books to get a wider vocabulary in English. This is also a New Year Resolution of mine . . .

My mother’s friend is a medical Doctor – and this is why I am inspired to be a Doctor when I am older. Imagine that someone is very sick and you can help them get better . . . This would be such a good thing to do; making the most of the gifts that we are given is important and, if we can use our gifts to help others, then even better. At the forefront of my mind always are the following words: ‘life just goes on’. These words help me to have a positive attitude to life and situations that arise. It’s important to be positive; you should always enjoy the moments that become memories.

We should enjoy what we are given and not be seeking more for ourselves all the time.

As Mr Abioden says: “Think like a proton – always positive!”

NEWS FROM THE OASIS

Happy New Year & Welcome Back!

Why is it important to set goals for kids?

Goal setting is important to your children because it gives them:

• Purpose. Having a strong sense of purpose boosts self-belief and can improve your child’s confidence. It is something meaningful and worthwhile to aim for.

• Focus. Having a goal in life helps children make better decisions. Will a certain activity get them closer to a goal or detract from it?

• Motivation. It gives them inspiration in life. Because the goals are meaningful and personal to your child, they’ll want to achieve them. Having goals in life gives you them the drive and the energy to keep going.

Check out this link for chart ideas:

http://www.freeprintablebehaviorcharts.com/goal_setting_charts.htm#Goal_List_1

Thank you for your ongoing support and all the wonderful work you do with your child.

Joy Ashford.

Greetings from the AAIS Oasis! I hope you had a wonderful winter break. The students made great progress last term and I’m excited to see their growth in this upcoming term. If you have any questions regarding support that could help your child, please don’t hesitate to contact me:

[email protected]

January is great time for goal setting with your child. Sit down together and set new goals for reading, sports, chores, homework completion or other activities. Create a chart and use stickers or stamps to increase motivation and celebrate success.

NURSES CORNERHOW DO I CHECK FOR HEAD LICE?

It’s important to check the hair of each family member thoroughly, preferably in daylight. Use an anti-lice comb to check dry hair for head lice and treat all those with head lice the same day, in order to avoid re-infestation. If you have found evidence of head lice, you have a few options to treat them but ensure that you are thorough as head lice can be quite resistant to certain chemicals. The best option is to use treatments that have a physical effect on the head lice instead of a chemical one, as the head lice cannot form a resistance to this.

WET COMBING OR BUG BUSTING

•Start by washing your child’s hair with ordinary shampoo, then rinse and apply generous amounts of hair conditioner.

•Use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your child’s hair first. Then use the fine-toothed nit comb, slotting the teeth into a section of hair at the roots and drawing it down to the tips of the hair. Wet, conditioner-coated lice stay still and will be caught in the teeth of the comb. Wipe the teeth both sides with kitchen roll or rinse under a tap to remove any lice and eggs.

HEAD LICE PREVENTION IS BEST

• Regularly inspect all household members and then treat them if necessary (if live lice are detected)

• Children with long hair should attend school with hair tied back (school scrunchies are available for sale in the uniform shop)

• If head lice are present in a child’s hair, parents / carers should notify their child’s friends or parents and teachers, so that they have an early opportunity to detect and treat if necessary

For further information please see the website:

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice/Pages/Introduction.aspx?url=Pages/What-is-it.aspx

Any other questions regarding Head Lice please feel free to discuss with your school nurse.

NURSES CORNER

HEAD LICE FACTS

Head Lice:

• are small wingless insects that live on the human head.

• prefer the warmest places on the human head, e.g., behind the ears or in the nape of the neck.

• have nothing to do with hygiene. Head lice do not discriminate between short or long, or clean or dirty hair.

• do not carry diseases, but scratching can break the skin, leaving it open to infection.

• cannot survive for longer than 2 to 3 days outside of hair.

• can survive hair washing by gripping on tightly to hair, and closing the holes along the sides of their bodies through which they breathe.

• cannot jump, hop, fly or swim.

• reproduce very quickly. Female head lice can lay up to 10 eggs a day. The eggs are usually found near the hair root, close to the scalp. They are more difficult to remove. So, the earlier you detect head lice the easier you can get rid of them.

ADVICE

WHAT DO HEAD LICE LOOK LIKE?

Head lice:

• are only about the size of a sesame seed (3-4 mm) when they are fully grown. Their 6 legs end in hook-shaped claws which they use to tightly grasp the hair.

• are transparent. This makes them difficult to detect in hair. Once they have fed, head lice turn brown-red. They lay their pearly-white eggs close to the scalp. In some cases you can find dead eggs, which are brownish in colour or empty egg cases, also known as ‘nits’ that are white and look a bit like dandruff.

• The eggs hatch after 7 days. These ‘baby head lice’ are called nymphs. After 10 days, nymphs become mature adults ready to lay eggs.

• Adult head lice live about 30 days. In that time, female head lice can lay 200 to 300 eggs.
