Winner of the international design competitionfor a new 27,000 square meter culturalcomplex in Albania, this design by BIG willreestablish the religious equilibrium withinAlbania by adding a new mosque to the newlycompleted Orthodox and Catholic Cathedrals.This entry was selected out of five finalistsincluding Spanish architect Andreas PereaOrthega, Architecture Studio from France,Dutch SeARCH and London-based Zaha Hadid.The complex consists of a new Mosque, anIslamic Center, and a Museum of ReligiousHarmony, providing a space that will not onlyserve the Muslim community of the city andsurrounding areas, but will educate the publicabout Islamic values and serve as a beacon forreligious tolerance.

The winning proposal by BIG, was chosen for itsability to create an inviting public space flexibleenough to accommodate daily users and largereligious events, while harmonically connectingwith the Scanderbeg square, the city of Tirana,and its citizens across different religions. Themosque can accommodate up to 1,000 peopleperforming their daily prayers and can expandto accommodate larger groups of up to 10,000on special holy days through the unique layoutof courtyards and public spaces.

The buildings forms were determined from twointersecting axes and formal requirementsplaced by the city grid of Tirana which calls forproper framing of the square and a coherenturban identity, and organization of theMosques main wall towards Mecca. Themosque contains a triangular layout and sits atthe end of the plaza framed by its twoneighbors. The placement of the buildingscreates a series of plazas, two minor ones onthe sides of the Mosque and a major plaza witha minaret in front. These plazas are semi-covered and serve as an urban extension of theplace of worship.

There are several Islamic nuances within thedesign that add to the aesthetics of thecomplex. The garden surrounding the newMosque and Center of Islamic Culture forinstance symbolically features the richvegetation described in Islamic literature. Thefaade with the multitude of rational,rectangular windows finds its inspiration inIslamic mashrabiya screens, which provideshading and privacy while still allowing viewsout. The curved facades as well are reminiscentof the curved domes and arches of traditionalIslamic architecture without becoming a literaltranslation.
