Aloe Vera throughout HistoryHistorically, Aloe Vera has been used for thousands of years by many different cultures. Its earliest recorded use dates back to the Ancient Egyptians where images of the spiky plants were drawn on the walls of temples and the gel inside the leaves was used as a beauty treatment for their Queens. Mayan women from the Yucatan region in Mexico maintained smooth complexions by applying Aloe Vera and even American Indians applied the gel to soothe burns and help heal blisters.

It is believed that the Aloe Vera plant was first introduced to China during the Sui-Tang Dynasties, in the 7th century. From African origins, the plant travelled overland with traders and Chinese doctors embraced the therapeutic benefits the juice appeared to provide. They often utilised the plant in the treatment of skin conditions, irritations and rashes and it became regarded as a harmonic remedy that produced effective results.

Yunnan Evergreen Biological CorporationCommercial production of Aloe Vera commenced in the Yuanjiang Valley in 1999 when Yunnan Evergreen Biological Corporation established the first professional plantations. The area was already home to a wild aloe reservation as the natural environment >

presented the perfect climatic balance for considerable plant growth. From the initial activities in 1999 Yunnan Evergreen has grown to farm over 5000 acres of the pristine Yuanjiang Valley and surrounding areas. The land has remained fresh and pollution-free thanks to the careful developments overseen by the Provincial Planning Commission and the State Ministry of Science and Technology. The valley is heralded as the “Home to Aloe in China” and the industry has become a primary source of income for the region.

Yunnan Evergreen’s objective is to manage the natural plant resource through advanced technology systems and to produce healthy products that improve the wellbeing of its users.

Aloe Vera FarmingWith an average temperature of 23°C, an annual rainfall of approximately 800mm and over 2000 hours of sunshine, the Yuanjiang Valley provides Aloe Vera with the perfect environment in which to grow. The dry, warm valley is free from frost and has no history of natural disasters making it one of the best locations for Aloe Vera farming in the world.

The Aloe Vera is planted in long rows of two. Around the base of these rows a trench is formed 50cm in width and 40-50cm in depth to provide the plants with adequate drainage.

The large fields are regularly maintained by a local labour force. The farmers make successful careers from their Aloe Vera cultivation and have a strong dedication to quality and sustainability.

Aloe Vera Harvest and Powder ProductionThe thick leaves of the Aloe Vera plant reach maturity after approximately 2 years. Using a hand held harvest knife, farmers cut up to 1.5 tonnes of the outer leaves per day. The young inner leaves are left on the plant and continue to grow until it is ready for the next harvest. The collected leaves are transported directly to the Yunnan Evergreen processing facility where they are converted into a variety of different products including the freeze-dried powder. >

The state of the art facility was built in accordance with strict good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards and the production is programmed by a high level HACCP system, as much of Yunnan Evergreen’s Aloe Vera is produced for the food industry.

The freeze drying process involves rapid cooling of concentrated juice extracted from the Aloe Vera membrane. This process removes all the moisture from the plant material and is undertaken in vacuum conditions ensuring there is no biological deterioration or nutrient loss. Once the material becomes completely solid it is crushed to powder form and packaged ready for cosmetic use.

Certified Organic Aloe Vera PowderAloe Vera is rich in many active constituents. From vitamins to amino acids, it contains a large amount of nutrients that benefit the human body. It is this array of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes that make it such a popular choice when formulating for skin health. Their conversion to Certified Organic commenced 1992 and key crops were chosen according to their suitability in the natural ecological settings. Lemon Scented Tea Tree (Leptospermum petersonii) and Rosalina (Melaleuca ericafolia) were the most successful of these plants and now represent the majority of essential oil produced by Koree Herbs. KOree herbs hArvesting

The major harvest season for Lemon Scented Tea Tree and Rosalina commences in the middle of the year, either June or July, depending on the winter weather. Mechanical harvesting equipment is utilised in conjunction with a traditional farming tractor and there is much manual labour through collecting and sorting the crop. Only the aerial portion of the plant is removed during the harvest. This leaves a hearty stump on the bush in order to ensure continued growth and a long term life cycle for each plant.

Koree Herbs also carries out a smaller harvest during January to produce more oil should the industry demand surpass the winter season’s supply. Through quality crop maintenance and staggered harvesting, the farm has achieved a sustainable cycle that will promote success long into the future.

Lemon scented tea tree (Leptospermum petersonii)

Lemon-scented tea tree is a tall shrub to small tree that can grow

up to 5 metres tall. A native to the Australian east coast, it has thin leaves, approximately 20-40 millimetres in length that offer a bright lemony aroma.

The oil’s aromatherapeutic uses include cleansing and healing as it has excellent antiseptic properties. It provides anti-inflammatory benefits along with a strong expectorant action. It also aids digestion and eases cold and flu symptoms. The fresh aroma also makes the oil suitable for use in natural cleaning products.

rosalina (Melaleuca ericafolia)

Rosalina is a native shrub that has dark green, feather-like leaves. The essential oil’s aroma is significantly softer than its Tea Tree cousin and is gentle enough to apply directly on the skin. Rosalina offers a similar cleansing antiseptic and antibacterial action and is an appropriate choice to relieve insect bites.

It is known for both its soothing, calming effects, and strong antimicrobial properties. When used in inhalation it can help alleviate cold and flu symptoms and in massage it can relieve muscular aches.

Harvest of Calendula Flowers occurs from June through to November and the bright orange blossoms are dried in preparation for use in infused oils, extracts or tinctures. The herbaceous perennial is used topically for its soothing and healing properties. It can relieve itchiness due to dry skin and offers protective properties for sensitive skin types.

The plantations wrap around the largest remnant rainforest on the Alstonville Plateau, known as Davis Scrub Reserve. The area is pollution free and experiences stable rainfall patterns which assist in maintaining successful growth cycles. Being located on the site of the extinct Mt. Warning volcano further enhances the plantation’s success as the soil is deep and very fertile.

Serendip planted their first macadamias here in 1989 and by 1993 were Certified Organic with the highest levels accredited by NASAA. In the years following, Serendip Organics continued to increase their certification levels, achieving NOP/USDA in 2006 and meeting all IFOAM standards.

Certified Organic is a lifestyle philosophy for Serendip. serenDip OrgAnics hArvesting

The harvesting of macadamia begins in the second half of the warm Australian summer, anywhere from late January to late February depending on the previous month’s weather. Nuts are collected regularly throughout the harvesting season which can continue through until late August or sometimes even to October.

Harvesting is undertaken by mechanical tractor equipment. The outer husk of the macadamia is removed from the nut in shell and is processed into compost mulch for the plantation trees. The luxurious golden-coloured oil is extracted from the white macadamia kernel. In the cold press extraction method, a steel expeller screw press is used. Although some mild heat is created by
