Aloha Hive BUZZ Winter 2012 Greetings Hivers! I am sitting here in my winter office and oddly enough, it is not feeling very wintry; it is November and it is 61 degrees here in Vermont! So many little things, like this warm day, get me thinking about our Hive summer together. Some other moments that I think about our summer together are when I pass by the local farm where all the pigs are, or even when I am collecting my own eggs from all the Hive chickens. I think of you all so often, smile at some of our crazy antics, and dream about spending another summer with so many of you. My memories are about so many moments, both big and small, that make our summer together so special. Do you remember that very first day of camp? Feeling the jitters and the excitement all rolled into one! And whether you are new to camp, or coming back as an Anti-Q for your final summer, the feelings are always the same on that first day of camp. It is the sense of community we create that immediately begins to let everyone know there is a friend to help them begin their summer journey; a hug from your counselor, a smile from a new tent mate, and singing in the Comb together on the very first night. We all have so many special days to share together in the coming summer. As I traveled all over this fall it was wonderful to see so many returning campers: Eliza, Catherine, Annie, Gaby and so many more, along with new girls who will be joining us for Hive 2012: Caroline, Maia, Sarah and Lily, to name just a few. It was such a treat to share memories with you all and dream about camp for the summer ahead. I am looking forward to creating the magic of Hive with each and every one of you. Beginning with Opening Day to all the adventures throughout your time at camp, together we will create the supportive and loving summer family of Hive 2012. For now, I hope you all stay well, keep in touch and dream about all you will do to create and be a part of the wonderful summer journey that awaits you. We’ve come to understand that we will have jitters, but we also know we have the strength of self, friends, and community to help us have the best summer ever! Aloha and Cheers to you all!! BUZZ Winter 2012

Greetings Hivers!

I am looking forward to creating the magic of Hive with each and every

one of you.

Hi Kathy,In Paris, we are having a very wild fall, I am back in school but will have a 10 day vacation next week. We are going to the Franche-Comté, where my father was born. It’s near the Swiss border, and very pretty. Over Christmas holiday we are all going skiing (if there is any snow), my parents, my brothers (Pierre and Luke) and I. Oh, and my brother Luke’s dog, Jules. I’ll take him sleigh riding. xoxoxoxoxo Rose Schelameur

I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger.

Then it hit me.

Q. Why doesn’t the elephant use the computer?A. Because it is afraid of the mouse!

Dear Kathy,Catherine is heading to Aloha next summer. We are sure it will be an excellent experience for her although it won’t even be able to match all of the enthusiasm, encouragement, and special care that you and your team produced the past three years. We all have to graduate various stages of our lives. Catherine looks forward to the future as well as the many times she will still be able to give you the BIG hugs every time she sees you in the years to come. Best, The Maddens

Dear Kathy,I had a birthday party at my house in a tent! with Caity and my best friends from school, and we had a fire...and a full moon! Our neighbor keeps track of all the birds on the pond and gave me a list, he has counted 89 species so far!!! miss you (a lot)love,Meggie mouse

Alohafrom our HIVE Assistant Director

Aloha from across the

Atlantic!I was hanging out the other day with my friend Addie Craig and, of course, our conversation turned to camp. I have known Addie for a couple of years from Hive but was delighted when she turned up in my drama class here at TASIS England. We were both wondering when the Dolphin Unit party might be next summer, and it struck me later that there is as much pleasure in remembering previous summers as there is in planning for future ones. It’s the perfect balance isn’t it: the best, fondest memories of friends, events and places all in the same thoughts as with so much excitement of what is to come!

I’m very fortunate to have so many camp friends who keep in touch and so lucky to be able to talk about camp with people here in England, like Addie, Nancy, Max, Grace and many more from summers past. I had a sneak preview of Nancy’s crossword for this edition of The Buzz, and after solving a few of the clues I began to recall things that I’d forgotten about. I think that’s one of the wonderful things about staying in touch with Hive folks: talking and reminiscing allows us to keep that Hive feeling alive throughout the winter.

Another fun way to keep Hive close by is to do some favorite camp activities. Here at school in England, I sometimes use camp games in my drama class warmups. I know some of you recreate your fave camps foods, either in the kitchen or over a fire outside; go camping or hiking; display or wear your pieces from Arts & Crafts...the list goes on I’m sure! One of the things that we can all do together is light our candles from Banquet at the end of the year while thinking of our wonderful summer of 2011 and looking forward to summer 2012 at

Hive or Aloha. See you all next summer, and in the meantime, missing you lots! Aloha,

Hello Lovely Lolanders! What am I thinking about right now, as we get further and further away from camp, and deeper and deeper into our every day lives at school, work etc…? I am thinking about your imagination, your creativity, and your zest for life this summer! And most importantly, your leadership!

As I reflect on the summer, I can’t stop thinking about all of the activities you planned. We are the youngest at camp, but that did not stop us from organizing a camp-wide prank on Kathy, or jumping up during lunch to surprise the camp with a flash-mob, or even organizing a spa for the entire camp! We have this rare opportunity at camp to be leaders, no matter our age or experience.

So as I sit here in New York City listening to the sounds to the hustle and bustle outside, I wonder how we can bring this little piece of what we learned at camp with us home and to school. How can we be leaders all year long? Maybe we can be leaders by going and talking to a new student at school…Or maybe we can be leaders by standing up for a friend…Or organizing something fun! I cannot wait to see you all next summer and hear what you are up to!

Right now I am living in New York City and working at the Whitney Museum of American Art. I work with schools who come to visit the museum with their classes, and I keep hoping that maybe one day, one of you

will walk in with your class! My plans for the spring are still undetermined, but I imagine they will be exciting…In the meantime, I will continue to count down the days to camp and think about all the fun we had this summer—making bat houses, squeezing 28 people into the lean-to, human fishing, and of course dressing up in COSTUMES! Oh, and remember the time the kanakas switched all the counselors one night!?

I miss every single one of you and hope to hear from you throughout the year!Aloha, Jamie

Dearest Dolphins,I miss you and hope you are each having a fantastic fall. I wanted to write to you about my day a couple Wednesdays ago in which camp kept popping up anywhere and everywhere. It was going to be an exciting day because my school was having a special guest visitor, someone that you all know very well.

While at the park with my students, a boy came up to me and asked, “will you be the pirate and try to catch us?” I immediately thought back to our incredible Peter Pan unit party during second half. While I was playing, I began to think about all the hard work we put into planning our unit party that took all of camp into a whole new world. I remembered how our playhouse was transformed into a first-rate nursery complete with (live) classical music, the woods became a delicious spot to eat (chocolate) mud with worms, and the Dell was host to not only a duel but also to the best rendition of “I Won’t Grow Up” that I’ve heard.

That afternoon, back in our classroom, Kathy Plunkett came for a special visit to talk about maple sugaring. When Kathy sat reading a book to the four-year olds in my room, it made me think about the time she read to all the Dolphins during the first half. Do you remember the huge storm we had the night of our unit overnight? I’ll never forget the funny skits we acted out, especially the one about ticks! And then we ran in the rain to Wilderness to eat a delicious dinner and then headed to the comb to get ready for bed. Do you remember the “Celebration Book” Kathy read? Has anyone thought of any celebrations?

That evening I went to my graduate school class and sat down for the beginning of class. Everyone was talking when the professor entered the room, and he cleared his voice to quiet everyone down. I instinctively raised my hand to help him quiet the room, like we do at camp, and it took me a good five minutes to realize that not every place has the same hand-raising signal system that camp does. Luckily my professor didn’t call on me! As I was drifting off to sleep that night I thought I heard reveille. I thought for a moment it was Hive’s birthday, but alas I was in my bed, in New York City, and not in a cot at camp.

I must admit that having a mixed-up camp day wasn’t so bad after all. I hope you are letting bits of camp get mixed into your outside-of-camp life, and I look forward to sharing more magic and mischief with you in the woods this summer!!Love and Aloha,Margaret Pennoyer

Dearest Dolphins!I hope you are all having a fabulous school year so far: having fun, learning lots, and taking plenty of time to remember Summer 2011. Camp memories always come to me at the silliest, most unlikely moments, bringing a big smile to my face no matter what I’m doing. Even now, as I look out my window on a rainy day, I think back to our soggy, cozy overnight when we all gathered around the fire to eat our damper and listen to Kathy read a story. We had so much fun that night singing songs from “Mulan” and running around the Comb in our pajamas!

I am working in New York City now, and seeing Hivers and counselors everywhere I go! From the airport, to a high school football game, and even just walking down the street, your smiling faces stand out in this big city! Of course, it’s not the same as being able to see fierce tetherball matches, daring see-saw tricks, and luxurious spas right from my bed, but it certainly makes me happy to have a hug from a Dolphin!

I also try to bring a little piece of Hive spirit into my New York life. As those of you who were second-half or full will know, I LOVED playing Captain Hook at our magical Neverland unit party. (Aaargh!) So you’ll be happy to hear my nasty pirate persona came back this fall - at Halloween! Our unit party was one of my favorite memories of the summer. Lost boys, Indians, fairies, and pirates took over the hillside with laughter, swordfights, and plenty of “dirt and worms” to eat. We never will grow up!

Thinking back on all these wonderful memories, I can’t help but get excited for the new ones we’ll make in 2012. Which house will win the Quidditch cup? What show will get all its songs stuck in our heads? How many silly places will I find a farm chicken? We can all look forward to finding out in just a few short months! Until then, I am missing you all terribly and dreaming of Lake Fairlee’s sunny shores.

Love and hugs to you, busy bees! Kenyon Cory

Hello Hilanders! The winter came as a quick surprise for those of us in the North East with a big snowstorm before Halloween! Even though it was very cold, the 3rd Graders at the Elementary School in Norton MA, where I am student teaching this year, dressed up in Hive-worthy costumes and had a parade outside. In the usual camp way, I chose to dress up as Harry Potter, and flew around all day on my broomstick, unofficially winning myself the award for coolest teacher.

Although the fall has been fun, I miss the summer camp life everyday. The warm, sunny days in the Swimming Department, Rainbow’s End as the sun goes down, and the long beautiful hikes up to the Hilander Project site. I recently visited camp and walked all the way up to the lean-to to see the sunset, it was so beautiful, and I thought of all of you Hilanders, with your hammers and nails, building something so beautiful! I wonder what next year’s project will be? You all will be so helpful to next year Hilanders, not only because you will be role-model Anti-Qs, but also because you will have some helpful building tips to pass on!

I can’t wait for next summer, especially because there are always so many fun surprises that come up at Hive. I spend the whole year wondering what the Hive Show will be, when Quidditch will be, and where I might hide for Counselor Hunt! Thinking about all these fun events at camp keep me busy throughout the school year, what brightens my day the most is when I hear from all of you! Your letters and emails are the best reminders of why I love camp so much; it’s the campers and counselors of Hive that make all the magical surprises happen. I miss you all!Aloha and lots of love,Megan Streeter

Hello there Hilanders! I am writing to you from hot and sunny Australia, where my second summer for the year is on its way. I can’t believe that as the days grow warmer here, camp is growing colder and colder, and so are many of you in the Northern Hemisphere!

I am spending almost all my time here in Australia teaching. I love my job teaching English to international students, but camp is never far from my mind and most days I’d give anything to trade my classroom and whiteboard marker for a little clearing in the woods past Wilson’s Farm, a hammer, and some fabulous Hilander company. When I think of our secret project (you all kept the secret soooo well!) and how much we all learnt and achieved I just get so excited and proud – what an accomplishment the ‘Hilander Wahi Lulu’ was! First half campers – I can’t wait for you to see the finished project and the result of all your hard work I know your first overnights at the site as Anti-Qs will be very special experiences. Has anyone used their new Hilander construction skills on other projects at home? I hope there are some new tree houses or bird houses or doll houses springing up across the country! I have designed a beautiful book full of photos of all of you working on the project, so on Opening Day 2012 you will be able to show your families what we all did together. And Dolphins (or should I say upcoming Hilanders!) – I can’t wait for you to find out about your special Hilander summer project. We are already planning and talking about it!

Amid my project memories I am of course also dreaming about crazy paintings made with paint on our toes and noses, nightly calisthenics outside the Tree Jinx, walker races at our hilarious unit party, fort-building on the playfield, fierce competition and fun during Quidditch, and so many other crazy camp activities. I remember the wish rafts that we sent off into the lake and the memory web we created to connect all of our special camp moments – I hope these memories will stay with you through the winter, and until we all see each other again on the Hive hillside for Summer 2012. Love and Buzz,Catherine Bleakley

Alooo-ha Anti-Qs!!Greetings from Barcelona, Spain!! I miss everyone so much! Can you believe how fast time is already flying by? Before you know it we will be back swimming in Lake Fairlee and sleeping under the Vermont stars on tent family overnights!

I am currently studying abroad in Spain for the semester (September through December), but camp is always on my mind! When I’m not learning Spanish or visiting various art exhibits, I visit the Von Gerlach girls who live a short bus ride away. Zoe, Naomi, Chiara and I have spent a few days together playing volleyball and hiking on the hills around their home. They have introduced me to many new Spanish foods and are helping me learn Spanish. Of course, we talk about Hive; we had a long discussion about Mississippi Mud, candy day and Hive’s Birthday. We also sang one verse of ‘Jerimiah was a Bullfrog’. It is one of my favorites and I cannot wait to sing it with everyone again soon!

I’ve also been able to travel around Europe on a few weekends. So far, my favorite trip has been to the Alps in Switzerland. I spent the weekend eating chocolate (not as good as Missippi Mud chocolate) and hiking. The crisp air and evergreens reminded me of waking up on chilly Vermont mornings to the fresh smell of pine trees. I hope everyone is having an amazing year. I cannot wait to spend another fabulous summer with you very

soon!! Love, Ginna

Greetingsfrom a HIVE Unit Head

Dear Anti-Qs!This year I’m writing to you from another state that starts with “M” but it’s not Massachusetts. I bet the Hoffbergers and Leah Genth can guess what state I’m talking about. Give up? I’m in Maryland! I didn’t move down here immediately after camp though, I got to have a really cool new experience working with a group of counselors to help close up camp. One of our main jobs was to take down the tents! Can you believe those gigantic things come down and fold up? If you can imagine what a king size sleeping bag would look like rolled up, that’s what they look like. But let me tell you, they’re much heavier than any sleeping bag in the world! After carrying those things down the hill I have a much greater appreciation for those of you who lived in the tents up on the top row of the unit (A8-10, A12, Palace, A4, you know who you are!). That’s a hike!!

Anyway, as I write to you I’m happily training for my second half marathon, studying for the GRE, which is the test you take to get into graduate school, babysitting, and working at the gym near my house. It’s hard to be so far away from camp—I used to be less than 3-hours away—because this is the time of year that I love to go visit. Fall is when the memories from camp are still fresh in my mind and I can almost picture every last one of you in our unit.

I love remembering our summer. We had the most epic Harry Potter day on record, we went bowling and learned how to use paddleboards on Hiver’s Day Off (also epic), we fit all 53 AQs in Horizons’ boat house for a rainy sing along first half, and on the beach for an overnight second half, and we put on a thoughtful and beautiful assembly for the whole camp. Those are just some of the things that we did together. Individually, you all went on 3.5 day pack trips, swam the Rainbow Trout, participated in tri-camp events such as regattas, swim meets and tennis tournaments, you made new friends, you were amazing buddies to the younger campers, and most importantly of all, you each became a role model in a new way this summer and hopefully learned a little about yourself in the process.

So, as I wrap up this letter I have just one request. I implore you all—campers and counselors alike—to pick a tentmate, counselor, best friend, or person you wanted to get to know better and write them a letter. It doesn’t have to be long and you don’t have to limit yourselves to one, but as fall turns to winter and summer seems farther away, let’s help each other keep camp always fresh in our minds. I’m so proud of you all and can’t wait to see you when I bring the Anti-van over next summer! Love,MadelineP.S. If you lost your address packet just email me ([email protected]), I’ll hook you up!

Dear Anti-Qs!I hope you are all having a fabulous fall and are looking forward to winter. I just moved from England to Maine and guess what, it has already snowed a bunch here! We don’t really have too much snow in England so I am enjoying all the snowy activities and new winter experiences I can, including making a ginourmous snowman in my yard, I think it is almost as tall as Hive’s maple tree (perhaps not quite that tall!). I gave him tomatoes for eyes and of course it made me think of Tommy K, maybe next summer there will be a sequel.

Speaking of snow, it was wonderful to see all of the Hivers at the Boston Open House, we certainly got caught in an early snow storm didn’t we! It was great to see all those photos of our amazing summer 2011 and it made me miss camp and all of you so very much. I think about my first Anti-Q summer with you guys ALL the time. Remember our cookouts and overnights at Horizons, complete with a special swimming activity for those second sessioners! And for first session when we had to hide out in the boathouse and sing a million amazing camp songs while we waited for the storm to pass. I just love how at Hive the weather doesn’t matter, sunshine, rain, storms, we just find a way to still have an incredible time. I bet we could even survive a summer snow storm and make it the best day ever!

Well I hope you are all still wearing those periwinkle shirts with pride, we will miss you at Hive next summer but I just know you will all LOVE Aloha and have an incredible time. For those of you who will be Anti-Q’s next summer it is going to be a blast, it’s a summer at Hive, of course it will be amazing!

Love to you all, have a great Winter, a happy Spring and I will see you all in just a few more months for the SUMMER!Lucy x

Aloha Elfins! How is your school year going so far? I hope that everyone is staying nice and toasty during this beautiful fall while we wait for next summer on Lake Fairlee!

I am still in Vermont and we have already gotten quite a bit of snow! I already had to put on my winter boots, hat, and mittens when I went for a hike last weekend. It made me miss the sunny warm days at camp when we all wore our crocs and socks to walk thru the tunnel on our way to activities.

I am teaching kindergarten this year in Vermont and I have told my students a lot of stories about camp and how fun it is to sleep in a tent all summer. We sing lots of songs together during the day too. Right now their favorite song to sing at morning meeting is “Waddly Acha Waddly Acha.” Every time we sing it, I think of our morning assemblies in the comb and all of the meals we had in the dining hall.

My favorite camp memory from last summer was our Elfin overnight on Aloha Hill. We had so much fun making pocket stew over the fire, playing vegetable off, reading the Kanaka book, and of course eating s’mores! It was such a beautiful night and we got to sleep under the stars!

I went to visit Kathy Plunkett a few weeks ago and we had so much fun talking about camp and remembering all the silly things that happened this summer. It was so different to see camp with all of the leaves changing colors and starting to fall off of the trees. It was beautiful, but not as fun as seeing all of you running around the shores of Lake Fairlee.

I am so excited to see you all in a few months to begin another magical summer at Hive! I hope that you all enjoy the rest of your school year! Love,Ali Ward

Would you like to help us spread the message of the Alohas? We are always looking for ways to interest families in the value of camping and in our quality programs for children. Even families with children not yet ready for camp can begin to think about including a summer at Aloha, Hive or Lanakila in their future. If you know of families who might be interested in knowing more, we can send you brochures or a video. Or perhaps you might be willing to gather interested families together; we would be happy to come with slides and stories. Please contact one of the directors or [email protected].
