Alternative Learning Center /// Design Development
IntroductionThe process began with an initial meeting which included district administration representatives, representatives from each of the programs that will be housed in the new building, representatives of the program manager and architectural team. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the team and for the architectural team to receive district input regarding the new building. From there, site visits were conducted to observe the existing spaces, to see the building in operation and, to find out what worked and did not work for the building occupants. VLK Architects collaborated with the LCISD design team to develop a program which included the desired spaces and spatial relationships, not only for each space, but for each of the three programs who will occupy this facility. Information and illustrations in this document demonstrate the relationships and design concepts as determined by the concerted efforts of the entire team.
Building ProgramFollowing Board approval of the Schematic Design, VLK Architects conducted a number of meetings with LCISD staff campus leadership to verify the program and proceed to the next level. Each space in the program was reviewed with respect to finishes, furniture, layout, door locations, and utility locations and services. The building exterior was further developed with respect to materials and finishes. The project budget was reviewed against the building program to verify that we are meeting the project budget.
Building Plan VLK conducted a facility assessment of the existing facilities with participants provided the following information:
• Easy to observe visitors approaching front of school from within the building • Need improved way-finding for visitors to find their way to the respective entrance • Improved exterior lighting at front of campus for security • Locate playgrounds so that students do not have to cross drives or Shop area to access them • Courtyards need to be secured with a fence • Safe and secure Inspection Area for ALC • Separate entrances for ALC & 1621 • Multi-Purpose Commons area that can accommodate a wide range of learning environments • Hallways are spacious in width and allow appropriate traffic flow • Kitchen to serve hot meals to students and staff • Natural light is valued • Sufficient pod storage and printers • Every space needs technology • Special spaces need to be designed to support the programs at the campuses
Site Development VLK Architects utilized the Program of Spaces designed with the design team as well as feedback from the district representatives to develop the new site layout for this new facility. Building footprints were arranged on site acknowledging existing trees, existing easements, and potential detention areas. The site has been modified to incorporate the updated building footprint and to address input from LCISD staff.
