his is the theme for the ELCA’s 25th anniversary being celebrated in 2013. Based on the
2 Corinthians 5. 17-21, we rejoice that we are rooted in the gospel that is also making all things new
through Christ - and that we are called to be ambassadors of Christ in this and every generation.
Always being made New will also be our theme in Lent as we spend some time each
Wednesday evening during our Holden Evening Prayer worship service viewing a brief video made
by the ELCA that tells the story of some aspect of our ministry together… whether it’s our work
with World Hunger or disaster response or other stories of our mission in local and global contexts.
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 13 with Soup Supper from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and
Ash Wednesday worship with Holy Communion and Imposition of Ashes at 7:00 p.m.
On the following Wednesdays in Lent (February 20 – March 20) we will gather for soup supper at 5:30 and
worship with Holden Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. Invite a friend and come join us as we explore what it means to
be a part of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and what it means that we are

The Kitchen Remodel Task Force sent out a survey last November asking for input from members for the upcoming Kitchen Remodeling project. We were excited to have over 50 people provide input and complete the survey. Survey respondents were strong kitchen users with 84% of them working at least once a month in the St. Peder's kitchen. Some of the key findings from the survey were: A) Top 3 appliances that they would replace were: 1) Dishwasher; 2) Stove and 3) a Dedicated (with plumbing) coffee maker. B) Top four features that respondents would like to see enhanced were: 1) More workspace; 2) Larger opening to the fellowship hall; 3) Enclosed garbage area and 4) more sinks. In addition there were many great suggestions made to the open ended questions and each one of them have been reviewed by the Kitchen Remodel Task Force. As we begin our process and plan evaluation we will use the survey information to help guide our decisions. We would like to thank each and every St. Peder's member who took the time to answer the survery. Lots of terrific information and suggestions were provided.

THANK YOU FOR SERVING ON COUNCIL! Our thanks to Betty Caspar and Kristi Erickson as they complete their Council terms. We are grate-
ful for their fine service and leadership on behalf of St Peder’s. We also welcome two new Council members:
Carl Jensen and Jean Evers. Thanks to both of them for their willingness to serve these next 3 years - and
thanks to all who prayerfully considered an invitation to serve.
Staff Transition… For nearly 5 years, Nancy Hegdahl has served as St Peder’s Accounts Manager. She is resigning to spend more time with her family, and although she will be missed, we are most grateful for her years of faithful and competent financial service. A search team is being organized to lead the interview process under the guidance of our Personnel Committee. The updated job description will be posted on our website (www.stpeders.net). THANK YOU, Nancy, for all you have done to uphold and strengthen our ministry!
For All the Saints…
We commend to God’s eternal care two members who’ve recently
died: Rolf Kirkegaard (December 13, 2012) and Dorothy Paulsen
(January 9, 2013). We also remember two former members who died in
these past weeks: Luella Kiebach and Duane McCracken. May they
rest forever in Christ’s loving embrace.
2013 Recipients of the Rev. Ottar Jorgensen Service Award… Since 1988, members of St Peder’s are honored for their faithful service by sharing a
model of the bronze sculpture of Jesus and Peter installed in the narthex (created by Nicholas
Legeros for our 100th anniversary in 1984). This year’s recipients are Thea Wetzler
and Dwight and Kari Bullard. Thank you for your servant leadership!
Together in Mission… The offerings of your financial resources allow us not only to support the mission of our congregation,
but to share our resources with others in ministry so that all may know of Christ’s love. TOGETHER we work on
Christ’s behalf in the world - none of us can do it alone! Thank you for your offerings through the twelfth month

LIBRARY MATTERS:
NEW! TWO NOVELS BY AWARD WINNING
LOCAL AUTHOR, Louise Erdrich
THE ROUND HOUSE. The story takes place in 1988 on an Ojibwa reservation in North Dakota. When there is a
violent attack on his mother, thirteen-year-old Joe, frustrated, sets out with his trusty friends to find the justice that his
father, a tribal judge, is helpless to accomplish. Told from a teenager’s viewpoint, this novel educates us about the modern
day struggles of Native Americans and shows us that our common humanity bonds us regardless of nationality or
socioeconomic differences.
THE PLAGUE OF DOVES. This story takes place in the small town of Pluto, North Dakota, a community
strangled by its own history. Told in stories by three narrators – Evelina, part Ojibwa and part white, her grandfather, a
tribal history buff, and a judge who had seen it all, the author sees – with sympathy and humor – that the tragedy and
comedy in her people’s lives are ineluctably commingled.

The morning of Tuesday, January 29th, I received a phone call from Pastor Julie. She called to inform me I was one
of the recipients of the Jorgensen Service Award. Needless to say I was surprised, shocked and most grateful. Tak,
Gracias, Danke, in other words thank you, thank you, thank you. I moved to St. Michaels 6 years ago to be near my
family, but have kept my church membership at St. Peder’s. I have been making the weekly Sunday volunteer
reminder calls for 5 years. It’s such a simply but rewarding task, and makes me feel part of the congregation. I so
miss the sermons, music, fellowship and friends. St. Peder’s holds many fond memories for me.
Again my thanks and blessings on St. Peder’s staff, council and congregation.
Peace and love,
Thea Wetzler

All retirement age folks are invited to join us for a potluck lunch on Friday,
February 15 at noon. Gathering for a warm meal shared with friends is a good way to
spend some time inside this winter! Bring a favorite dish to share and invite a friend to
come, too. After lunch, guest Andrew Carlson will make a short presentation on Estate
Planning. (There’s no luncheon in March…come instead to the
Codfish Dinner and the Lenten Soup Suppers!)
Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday February 3rd! On Sunday February 3rd, 140 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter and a warm meal. Please join young people around the country as they demonstrate God’s love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring. It’s a simple, yet significant act of caring for others. Drop $1 (or more) in the soup pot as you leave worship on February 3. We are also collecting non-perishable food
items for the Minnehaha Food Shelf on February 3. Our young people are developing hearts for giving that can last a lifetime. Please support their efforts as we reach out to our neighbors.
Journey through Lent Small Group Book Study Opportunity Acts of Faith; The Story of an American Muslim, the struggle for the Soul of a Generation By: Eboo Patel
This year for our Journey through lent time, we will be doing a book study & discussion each Wednesday Evening. Our book this year is written by Eboo Patel, is the founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based international nonprofit dedicated to building the interfaith youth movement.
Patel writes about his life, his struggles, and how his faith & the faith of other people helped to shape his life. His passion for help bring together young people from all different faiths is an inspirational story! Patel is helping to teach the younger generation that there is a place for all faiths to work together for the common good of the creation.
Each Wednesday evening during Lent, we will have a discussion on a portion of this book within the context of the season of Lent, and see where we are called to go during this journey what it means to live in an interfaith world. Reading schedules will be ready on Wednesday February 13th & we will kick off the study on Wednesday February 20th .
If you are interested in participating in the book study, please sign up on the sheet outside the fellowship hall & Sarah Grans will get copies of the book for each participant. The cost for the book is $10.00. If you would like to purchase the book yourself, amazon.com is the cheapest. We also have a copy of the book in the church library. Please talk to Sarah Grans with any questions.

Mission Trip 2013: Puerto Rico Each month will feature two of our Mission Trip participants to share a little bit more about who they are & why they want to head out on this adventure.
Amanda Vetsch I, Amanda Vetsch, am a senior at Bethany Academy and I love to play sports and hang out with my friends. This year’s mission trip to Puerto Rico will be my sixth mission trip. I am incredibly excited to go down and show God’s love to the people of Puerto Rico! I really wanted to go on this trip because I feel like God has given me a heart for service to others. I have been on five mission trips in the
States but this year’s will be different because it’s almost international, but not technically because it’s a U.S. Territory. I am most excited to learn about the different culture and see how God can use us there in not only the big ways but the little things too. I hope that you all can join me in praying for unity among our group and that we would right now be preparing our hearts so that when we are there we are filled with a spirit of service, joy, flexibility, and compassion! Thank you for all of your sup-port! We definitely wouldn’t be able to have this opportunity to serve God without everything this congregation does for us. Emma Johnson
Hi, I am Emma Johnson a freshman at Washburn High School. Some things that I like to do during my free time are reading, hang out with my friends, go to movies, swim, and play softball. I want to participate on this trip because I really enjoy helping other people out. I think it will be fun to get to know other kids on this trip and it will also be a good experience for me as a person. I am nervous about just
being so far away from home on my first ever mission trip. On the other hand, I love the tropics so it will be fun working in a nice environment. I would just ask you all to pray that we are safe and have a fun time in Puerto Rico. Thanks!
