M
usic has always been an expression of faith - in our liturgy and in the songs of faith we
call “hymns.” God’s people have sung their joys and laments, their trust and hope, their praise
and thanksgiving for thousands of years. Who writes the texts and melodies of all that music?
This year on Wednesdays in Lent, we will learn from five different hymn writers what it means
to sing to the Lord a new song. Holden Evening Prayer will again be our liturgy February 29
– March 28.
On Ash Wednesday, February 22, we will gather for a service of Holy Communion and the Imposition
of Ashes.
Each Wednesday, worship is at 7:00 p.m. - but join us at 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall for Soup Supper!
Bring a friend and journey with us as we gather each week to sing to the Lord a new song in the Lenten days.

Social Ministry was active in 2011. We were able to respond both to urgent needs and more strategic missions. We supported a scouting trip made by a group of doctors and nurses looking for a hospital to support in Vietnam. We provided assistance in the wake of the North Minneapolis tornado.
We also held the second annual Fair Trade Sampler, selling goods made by people from around the world.
Thanks to all those who participated on the Social Ministry Committee in 2011: Marilyn Gisselquist, Lisa Jensen, Sandra Hultgren, Julie McMahon, Sue Nielsen, Marveleen Peterson, Dan and Karen Vetsch, and Joe Munnich. Thanks also to Christian Life for their collaboration on the Fair Trade Sampler. And special thanks to Pastor Julie for all her help and guidance.
During 2011, $18,450 was distributed to the following ministries
GLOBAL CardioStart / Humanitarian Services for Children of Vietnam ....................................................$5,000 ELCA Anti-Malaria Campaign.....................................................................................................$1,500 Maia Olsen, Support for Cameroon Work ..................................................................................$1,000 Feed My Starving Children .........................................................................................................$1,500

St. Peder’s Social Ministry Committee Annual Report for 2011
New Shepherding Groups met in January… If you weren’t able to attend Shepherding Group Sunday, January 8, and don’t know which group you’re in,
please take a look at the new group assignments posted in the display case outside the pastor’s office -
or give the office a call and we’ll let you know! A special word of THANKS to all those who’ve served
as leaders in the former groups: we’re grateful for your service!
Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study Again in Session! You are invited to share in this time of learning and faith formation at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
Pastor Sharon Kelly will be the facilitator as you gather to explore scripture and how this living word
reaches out to us. This session the focus is 1 and 2 Corinthians. These letters of Paul to the early Christian church
in Corinth has relevance even for us today! Bring your Bible and invite a friend and come to the
Conference Room at the east end of the hall for this adventure in Christian learning!
Synod Assembly is February 17 and 18: We’re electing a new bishop! The Minneapolis Area Synod will meet in Assembly at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake on
Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18. In addition to engaging in Bible study, business sessions, and worship, we will
elect a new Bishop to serve a 6-year term of office. (Bishop Craig Johnson resigned last summer to become the Interim
Senior Pastor at Mt. Olivet after Pastor Paul Youngdahl’s death.)
St Peder’s will have 3 voting members present: Pastor Julie Ebbesen, Sarah Grans, and Craig Rocheleau… and
you’ll read a report from them in the March Messenger. Results of the Bishop’s election will be announced in worship on
Sunday, February 19.
As we go to assembly, there are 18 nominees for Bishop. (Other nominees can be named on the first ballot at the
Assembly.) There are 12 men and 6 women candidates - and one of the nominees is a former St Peder’s pastor, Rev. Mary
Albing. You can learn more about the candidates - and the assembly’s agenda - by checking out the information on the
Minneapolis Area Synod website: mpls-synod.org.
Together in Mission… The offerings of your financial resources allow us not only to support the mission of our congregation,
but to share our resources with others in ministry so that all may know of Christ’s love.
TOGETHER we work on Christ’s behalf in the world - none of us can do it alone!
Thank you for your offerings through the twelfth month of 2011.
