DENVER, Pa. Collectors snapped upgold, silver and paper rarities at thecentral Pennsylvania auction com-panys $241,000 numismatics sale,

with Internet live bidding throughLiveAuctioneers.com. All prices quotedinclude an 18% buyers premium.

    The top itemamong 201lots offeredwas an1889 $5L i b e r t yH a l f -E a g l eNGC PF65 cameogold coin. Withprovenance from the renowned collec-tion of Texas newspaper publisher

Amon Carter (1879-1955), the treas-ured coin was entered in the sale witha $28,000-$35,000 estimate. Buoyedby aggressive bidders, it finished at animpressive $44,800.

Another gold piece, an 1854-D $2.50gold Liberty Quarter-Eagle, AU-58,boasted provenance from the AshlandCity (Tenn.) Collection of branch-mintgold coins. It surpassed its high esti-mate to sell for $23,600.

Among the silver coins offered, a 1799Draped-Bust Heraldic silver dollarfared best. It is rare to see this partic-ular coin in extra-fine condition, as thisone was, said Morphys CEO, DanMorphy. Edging out its high estimate, the coin concluded its bidding run at$4,100.

Due to an anomaly that occurred at themint, a 1955 Lincoln Head penny wasrendered the appearance of havingbeen die-cut twice. Estimated at$2,000-$2,500, the humble coppercoin drew a high rate of interest, fin-ishing at $3,540.

The highest-priced bill in the papermoney section was an 1896 $5 silvercertificate. In very fine condition, thenote was expected to make $1,600-

$2,000 but instead was bid to $3,540.The current market for gold and silvercoins is unprecedented, and numis-matics will continue to be an area ofspecial interest to us, said Morphy.
