Former Raiders punter and perennialHall of Fame snub Ray Guy saw histhree Super Bowl rings sell for $80,100this week as part of a bankruptcy filing. The seven-time Pro Bowler was forcedto sell the rings after filing for bank-ruptcy this spring.

An unnamed buyer purchased the ringsfrom a Los Angeles auction house. Therings, from Super Bowl XI, XV andXVIII, contained 28, 35 and 23 dia-monds, respectively. They were wonduring Guy's 14-year NFL career; thefirst two in Oakland and the final one in1984 after the team moved to Los An-geles. Strangely, each ring was a dif-ferent size, suggesting that, like a pairof pants, Super Bowl rings can run bigor small.

When asked by the Augusta Chronicleabout the sale, Guy declined to elabo-rate. "I don't walk to talk about it," hesaid. "I'm not trying to be hateful, butsometimes you've got to do whatyou've got to do."

The average price of $26,500 per ringwas on the lower side for recent salesof similar items, although the fact thatGuy's were offered as a package hada clear effect on the overall price.

A Super Bowl II ring belonging to GreenBay Packers legend Fuzzy Thurstonsold for more than $40,000 earlier thissummer. Three years ago, William "TheRefrigerator" Perry sold his Super BowlXX ring for $27,000. It was returned tohim earlier this year by a 10-year-oldboy who thought the former ChicagoBears star would appreciate having itback.

This auction featured a House, lot, An-tiques, Crocks, Primitives and ofcourse, license plates.

The daughter over the estate said she,"thought about just throwing those oldtags in the trash." It’s a good thing shedidn’t. A 1915 Tennessee License Tag,(only about 55 known to still exist), of-fered in this sale realized a price of$5,900.

Tag collecting, buying and selling hasreally taken off within the last ten yearsand the interest is not just in the oldrusty ones.

Vehicle registration has been docu-mented in various forms since 1901when the state of New York passedlegislation that required motor vehicleregistration. Inthis case, ametal disk(about the sizeof a silver dol-lar) with a reg-istered numberwas attachedto the dash-board of thecar, while theowner wouldfurnish a hand-made licenseplate bearinghis initials tothe rear of the vehicle.

In many states, the issuing of plates bycities and towns came before actualstate issued ones. These are often re-ferred to today as “pre-states” as theywere required by state law but not is-sued by any particular state agency.

These plates weremade of an assortmentof material by the ownerof the vehicle. Brass, tin, leather, wood, steel andother substances wereused to display registra-tion of the vehicle. Some had no date orstate identification. These were called Pre-state issues.

September of 1903marks the first of state is-sued license plates. These plates were all numeric andwere made of heavy steel with a highgloss dark blue porcelain coating andremained in use in several states untilabout 1915. Improvements to the li-cense plate came around 1915 withthe introduction of embossed or de-bossed metalplates and stillare the methodof producingplates today.

Other notableitems thatgaveled in greatprices were aPepsi Cola crockwhich sold for $1000, two Orange Ten-nessee 1951 license plates for$240.00, a Peerless Whiskey,Nashville, TN crock for $525 and aShelbyville Coca-Cola Bottle for $140.

The recession has hit the movie andfilm industry in Southern California anda huge props emporium in North Holly-wood is now looking at closing. 20thCentury Props of North Hollywood isplanning to close next month. The propshop has supplied props for majormovies and television shows for over20 years and has a huge 118,000-square-foot warehouse. But the prophouse has been losing money as filmproduction has fallen for a variety ofreasons. First the industry was hit bythe writers' strike. Then the recessionkicked in and many productions werepostponed or scrapped. Also filmmak-ers are finding itprohibitively ex-pensive to film inCalifornia and areincreasingly head-ing to other placeswhich offer tax breaks and other incen-tives. The owner says he has lost closeto $2 million over the past year. Theprop store employed 28 full-time work-ers.

The LA Times reports that the the shopwill auction off the inventory whichowner Harvey Schwartz says consistsof 93,752 pieces including rattan furni-ture set used on the TV series "TheGolden Girls" and a desk owned byHoward Hughes and used in the movie"The Aviator." The insured value of theprops is around $8 million but the salevalue could be as much as $30 million. The props store also sells items oneBay and is a fantastic decorating re-

source for fans ofretro styles. Offer-ings on eBayrange from thesmall and inexpen-sive such as Art

Deco clocks to the huge and more ex-pensive items like a 1940s flying horsegas station sign.

'Toys with Character' ruled the roost atsummer Auction

Written by Auction House PR

VINELAND, N.J. – Hefty cast-irontrucks, banks and figural doorstopsfound favor with bidders who congre-gated at Bertoia’s New Jersey galleryfor a summer auction of ‘Toys withCharacter.’ The June sale grossed$1,014,000, withabove-estimate andeven world-recordprices achieved onmany of the 1,481 lotsoffered. All pricesquoted in this report in-clude a 15% buyer’spremium.

Topping the roster ofprices realized was acirca-1933 toy versionof an Ingersoll RandMack truck with painteddriver figure. Made byHubley, the richly huedgreen and red truckwith spoked nickel wheels featured anopen-frame body that exposed a well-detailed nickel compressor. In pristineto near-mint condition, it rumbled pastits $8,000-$10,000 estimate to settle at$13,800.

An extensive selection of still banksfeatured as its centerpiece the Guy andKim Zani collection. The tightly focusedcollection consisted entirely of antiquebanks shaped as safes, some with pad-locks, others with combination locks. Arare and unusual entry, a J.M. Harpersafe bank topped with a well executedbust of President Grover Cleveland wasdescribed in the auction catalog as “re-portedly one of two known,” and wasbid to $11,500 against an estimate of$8,000-$9,000.

Just as desirable as the mechanicalbanks that were cast from it, a complexbrass three-dimensional pattern for J. &E. Stevens’ “Cat and Mouse” bank wasin excellent, complete condition. Itearned more than twice the low esti-mate at $8,050.

Bertoia’s is known as a premier sourcefor early cast-iron doorstops. The com-pany’s owner, Jeanne Bertoia, is anoted expert on the subject and hasspent years collecting, studying, writing about and selling the very best

doorstop examples at auction. Some75 doorstops were entered in the sum-mer sale, and predictably, a Hubley ArtDeco design of two bathing beautiesunder a parasol, signed “Fish,” createda bidding frenzy.

“The Bathing Beauties doorstop is anextremely popular formwith collectors, and thisexample was in particu-larly nice condition,”said Bertoia. “It was es-timated at $3,000-$4,000 and sold for$10,350, which we be-lieve to be a world auc-tion record.”

Another doorstop thatmay well have set anauction record was theHubley/Fish MessengerBoy. A classic depictionof a Deco-era bellboyholding a wrapped bou-

quet of flowers, its bright colors andnear-mint condition helped elicit a win-ning bid of $8,050 against an estimateof $4,000-$5,000.

A flotilla of handsome toy boats com-manded a first-class fare from bidders. The flagship turned out to be an early20th-century Bing (Germany) clock-work King Edward gunboat. Made ofhand-painted tin and measuring an im-pressive 29 inches in length, it retainedits original guns, funnels, masts andlifeboats. The boat sold within estimatefor $8,625. Both a Bing Leviathanpainted-tin clockwork oceanliner andBuddy ‘L’ pressed-steel tugboatachieved a closing price of $6,900.

Tinplate character toys finishing in thetop dozen lots of the sale were led byan all-time favorite with Disney collec-tors – a Distler (Germany) tinplateclockwork Mickey Mouse Hurdy Gurdywith tiny dancing Minnie Mouse on topof the barrel organ. A highly sought-after toy, it exceeded estimate to closeat $8,050. Joining the beloved micewere two other coveted German clock-work toys: a boxed Lehmann Ma-suyama, which depicts a Japanesewoman being transported in a rick-shaw; and an extremely rare EppieHogg in Auto, made by Nifty. Each ofthe toys made $6,090.
