NEW YORK A long-forgotten pieceof America's militaryhistory is goingto auc-tion.

The original smallerstatue of the iconicraising of the U.S.flag at Iwo Jima in1945 is expected tofetch up to $1.8 mil-lion later this monthat a New York auctiondedicated to World War II artifacts.

That such a statue even exists is newsto all but the most ardent history buffs.

Most Americans are familiar with the32-foot-tall Marine Corps War Memorialin Arlington, Va. Felix de Weldon's 1954bronze depicts five Marines and a NavyCorpsman raising the flag on IwoJima's Mount Suribachi as Allied forcesstruggled to capture the Japanese-heldisland.

    Less well-known is the 12 1/2-foot-tall

statue created soon after the event."It's an incrediblyiconic image of brav-ery," says MarciReaven, vice presi-

dent of historic ex-hibits at theNew-York HistoricalSociety. "It immedi-ately captured Amer-icans' imaginations, their hopes for victory

and their fears at a difficult time."

Completed in just three months thecast stone monument was erected inWashington, D.C., in front of what is

now the Federal Reserve Building onConstitution Avenue. It remained thereuntil it was removed in 1947 to makeroom for a new building.

Restored by an avid military collector, the statue will be offered at auctionalong with the tools, drawings, sketches and photos, all belonging toartist who created it, Felix de Weldon.
