The yellow-and-green 1968 Picasso, de-picting a pipe-smoking musketeer, was of-fered by Jerome Fisher, co-founder offootwear company Nine West Group.
The star lot lifted the total to $102.8 mil-lion, beating the $87.6 million low esti-mate as the highest-priced artworks foundbuyers. The tally was still Christies' lowest
for Impressionist and modern art in NewYork since 2004.
As the crowd poured out onto 49th Streetafter the 70-minute sale, dealers and col-lectors were relieved. The night before,Sothebys' aggressively priced lots by Pi-casso and Alberto Giacometti failed in anauction that fetched just $61.4 million.
There is pent-up demand to buy, said NewYork dealer David Nash. The estimateswere reasonable, but some of the priceswere really hard to follow. He said prices
were high for the rare and the really ugly.
A possible indicator of market jitters: onthe day of the sale, Christies withdrew a1928 surrealist Max Ernst, estimated tobring up to $9 million. The blue canvaswas the featured artwork on Christies' salepress release.
Ernst's current auction record is $2.4 mil-lion. Europeans were the buying majority, snagging 45 percent of lots, according toChristies. Americans bought 42 percentwith Asians scooping up nearly 8 percent.
Another late Picasso, Femme au chapeau, sold for $7.8 million to the Nahmad art-dealing family, shy of the $8 million to$12 million estimate. The work was soldby painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel,
who acquired it from Picasso's sonBernard Ruiz Picasso in 1989.Schnabel'ssale was motivated by real-estate debtslinked to his construction of an Italianate pink condominium building in Manhat-
tans West Village, he said in an interviewwith the New York Times.
Collectors were reluctant to offer majorworks this season, but estate sales broughtout fresh artworks.

Ted Williams memorabilia stolen
SWANZEY, N.H. (AP) -- Ted Williams'
fishing license and personal notes on local
fishing holes have been swiped during an
auction preview in New Hampshire.
Auctioneer John Pappas tells the NewHampshire Sunday News the stolen items
had drawn strong interest and could have
fetched $1,000 or more at Saturday's auc-
tion.
The 1970 license for "Theodore Williams"
was in a small holder attached to a fishing
cap, and the notes were tucked inside. The
items were taken from the Knotty Pine
Auction Service last week. Saturday's auc-
tion was the second time the auction serv-
ice has sold items for Williams' third wife,
Dolores Wettach Williams.
The model and actress was married to the
Boston Red Sox hall of famer from 1967
to 1973. The items come from their Ver-
mont home.

. . . Rookies
Lets set the stage. This is an opportunity
for those who have not previously won
the contest, are now an apprentice or haveless than 3 years auctioneering experi-
ence.
These brave souls take their place on a
stage in front of a room full of veteran
auctioneers and their families. The con-
testants are asked to sell a couple of items
they bring with them for the competition.
From this performance, they are judged
from a set criteria which includes, but is
not limited to, the actual bid calling and
the ability to get the bidding audience in-
volved in the sale.
For those who have had the pleasure, or as
some will tell you, the misfortune of
speaking in public, then you have some
idea of how daunting a task this is. If you
have ever delivered a speech or been
asked to train, instruct or even brief your
peers on any subject, then you are begin-
ing to get an idea how nerve racking this
sort of contest can be.
After the first round, four very talented
auctioneers were cut down to the two fi-nalists; Jeremy Robinson who apprentices
with Ben Bray at Ben Bray Realty and
Auction in Lafayette, TN and Jarrod
Richardson who apprentices with David
Allen at Music City Auction in Nashville.
After a very spirited final round, Jarrod
Richadson was chosen the winner of the
2009 Rookie Bid Calling Champion.
The State of Tennessee continues to pro-
duce some very fine auctioneers and it ap-
pears very evident that all four of this
years contestants will soon take their
place alongside of the best in this talent
rich industry.
