New Study Confirms Significant Land Loss Along Louisiana
Coast
Ducks Unlimited
LAFAYETTE, La. --(Ammoland.com)- Coastal Louisiana has lost more
than 1.2 million acres in the past 78 years, according to a new study by
the U.S. Geological Survey National Wetlands Research Center.
The study analyzed wetland changes from 1932 to 2010 and provides a
more accurate picture than previously available.
“This more detailed analysis provides vital information for
conservation planning,” Bob Dew, DU manager of
conservation programs in Louisiana, said. “We have a clearer
picture of which areas are in greatest need of restoration
efforts, and which areas are most likely to contribute to future
land gains.”
Ducks Unlimited’s coastal habitat programs have restored more than
100,000 acres in Louisiana, including marsh in areas like the Barataria
and Terrebonne basins – two of the areas undergoing the greatest
wetland loss, according to the study.
“By understanding land change on the Louisiana coast,
decision makers can make informed choices about how to
actively manage the land to help reduce future loss,” Phil
Turnipseed, USGS National Wetlands Research Center
director, said. “We can’t manage what we don’t measure.”
Louisiana land loss accounts for nearly 90 percent of the total coastal
marsh loss in the contiguous U.S. Much of the land loss is caused by
depriving the marshes within the Mississippi River Delta of sediment.
Dams, levees and channels along the Mississippi River and its tributaries
have cut off the source of land-building sediment responsible for forming
and sustaining coastal marshes.
But there is hope.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers diverts 30 percent of the Mississippi
River through the Atchafalaya River system, and its delta is growing. The
Atchafalaya and Wax Lake Deltas have grown significantly since the
1970s proving land building is still possible when freshwater and
sediments are allowed to flow into adjacent wetlands.
“Ducks Unlimited has long advocated for sustainable
ecosystem restoration of the Mississippi River Delta by
reconnecting the river to its marshes,” Dew said. “This study
further demonstrates the strength of that solution.”
The Gulf Coast winters 40 percent of the continent’s waterfowl
population and boasts some of the best waterfowl hunting in the country.
For that reason, coastal restoration is a top priority for Ducks Unlimited.
“We know we’ve already lost 1.2 million acres of this
important area, which is home to the largest population of
wintering waterfowl in North America. We have a duty to
address this national scale catastrophe, a duty to our children
and their children,” Dew said. “The loss of Gulf Coast habitat
is one of the most significant threats to waterfowl on the
continent, and everyone has a stake in the outcome.”
About:
Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated
to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl
habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than
12 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million
supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to
program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to
fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. Visit

National Rifle Association
FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- Today, the U.S. Seventh Circuit
Court of Appeals conclusively and forcefully held, without need for oral
argument, that the National Rifle Association has the right to recover
attorneys’ fees in its lawsuits against the city of Chicago’s and the village
of Oak Park’s unconstitutional gun bans.
The court held that the NRA was a prevailing party in the case of
National Rifle Association v. City of Chicago and Village of Oak Park.
“This is a Second Amendment victory and a civil rights
victory. The National Rifle Association and the Second
Amendment prevailed against those who sought to deny the
right to keep and bear arms in Chicago and Oak Park,” said
Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for
Legislative Action.
“The attempt to avoid paying the NRA’s attorneys’ fees was
rightly found to be unjust by the Court.”
After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment
guarantees a fundamental right to keep and bear arms for all Americans
in the historic McDonald v. Chicago and NRA v. Chicago and Oak Park
cases, it remanded them for the purpose of issuing an injunction against
Chicago and Oak Park’s unconstitutional gun ordinances. Before that
injunction was issued, however, those ordinances were repealed. The
City and the Village then argued that the NRA was not a prevailing party
and should not be allowed to recover attorneys’ fees. The District Court,
which originally ruled against the NRA, agreed and denied the fee award.
Today’s Seventh Circuit decision overturns that ruling, holding instead
that the NRA is indeed a prevailing party and is entitled to receive
reimbursement for attorneys’ fees. The amount to be recovered will be
established by the District Court.
“This is a major victory for the NRA. While we are grateful to
recover our attorneys’ fees, however, we remain steadfast in
our belief that Chicago and Oak Park continue to circumvent
the law of the land and deny their law-abiding residents the
Second Amendment freedoms protected by the Constitution.
We will continue to fight those efforts until the Second
Amendment is fully respected,” concluded Cox.
About:
Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest
civil rights and sportsmen’s group. Four million members strong, NRA
continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to
advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce

Philadelphia Beaver Confirmed To Have Rabies
Residents urged to avoid waterfront along Pennypack Creek until
further notice.
Pennsylvania Game Commission
HARRISBURG, PA --(Ammoland.com)- Dr. Walter Cottrell,
Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian, today announced
test results for a beaver that attacked three individuals in northeast
Philadelphia show that the animal was infected with the rabies virus.
Test results were provided to the Game Commission today, at 2:10 p.m.,
by the Department of Health’s Bureau of Laboratories in Exton, Chester
County.

Yesterday evening, the beaver carcass was taken to the University of
Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, Kennett Square, Chester County, and
prepared for transfer for rabies testing at the Department of Health
facility. A full necropsy will be conducted at New Bolton to determine if
there were other potential causes, such as injury or another type of
disease.
As a precaution, Game Commission officials continue to encourage
residents to avoid the Pennypack Creek waterfront area between
Bustleton Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard in northeast Philadelphia.
On June 1, a husband and wife were fishing in the Bustleton Avenue area
when a large beaver bit the woman’s leg. As her husband attempted to
assist her, the beaver turned and bit him in both arms and chest area.
Game Commission WCO Jerry Czech, who serves Philadelphia and parts
of Delaware County, responded to the hospital and interviewed the two
victims.
On June 2, in the area of Roosevelt Boulevard, a child was bitten by a
beaver. While at the hospital to interview the victim’s family, WCO Czech
received word that a Fairmount Park Ranger had captured a beaver 500
yards from where the child was bitten. WCO Czech responded to the
scene and put the animal down and transported it to the New Bolton
Center.
Last night, June 2, from 8 p.m. until midnight, WCO Czech, other Game
Commission WCOs and USDA Wildlife Services attempted to search for
other beavers in the vicinity. A search of the area will continue, and
Game Commission officials are encouraging residents seeing beavers or
other mammals acting in a suspicious manner to report that information
to the agency’s Southeast Region Office at 610-926-3136 or local law
enforcement.
In late April a rabid beaver was found in the White Clay Creek area of
Chester County. According to WCO Keith Mullin, in that incident, a local
angler heard a splash behind him and turned to see a beaver swimming
toward him.
“The beaver bit the angler on the back of his leg and
attempted to come at him again,” WCO Mullin said. “The
fisherman was able to drown the beaver after quite a struggle
and suffered another bite on his hand. I met him at the site to
retrieve the carcass, which was then submitted for rabies
testing and, unfortunately, it came back positive.”
Rabies is a viral disease affecting the nervous system. It is usually
transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal. According
to the state Health Department, rabies continues to be a significant
public health problem in the Commonwealth. Since the year 2000,
between 350 and 500 animals are annually confirmed in the laboratory
to have rabies. Health Department reports show that, in 2010, 53 percent
of the animal rabies cases were raccoons, followed by skunks (14
percent), cats (14 percent), bats (7 percent), and foxes (6 percent).
While an animal with rabies may exhibit abnormal or aggressive
behavior, this is not always the case. If bitten by any animal, the first step
in rabies prevention is to immediately wash the wound with plenty of
soap and warm water, and then promptly seek medical care. If the
circumstances of the exposure warrant, human rabies vaccine may be
prescribed by medical officials.
The last human rabies fatality in Pennsylvania was a 12-year-old
Lycoming County boy who died in 1984.
If any human contact occurs in the area with beavers or other mammals,
once medical care has been administered, a report should be made to the
Game Commission’s Southeast Region Office (610-926-3136).

West Virginia Hunters Harvest 9,216 Spring Turkeys
West Virginia DNR
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – -(Ammoland.com)- Preliminary
harvest numbers for the 2011 spring gobbler season show a take of 9,216
bearded turkeys, a decline of 10 percent from the 2010 harvest of 10,209
birds.
Division of Natural Resources’ wildlife officials surmise a combination of
inclement weather, high gas prices, and lower turkey numbers were
major factors in the lower kill.
“Our biologists had predicted a slightly lower harvest based
on poorer productivity in 2009,” said Curtis I. Taylor, Chief
of the Wildlife Resources Section. “Preliminary reports from
field personnel also indicate a lower hunter turnout, probably

due to high fuel prices and many rainy days during the
season.”
The harvest was down 12 percent each in Districts 1 and 2, down 9
percent each in Districts 3 and 6, down 16 percent in District 5, and up
slightly in District 4.
Top counties were Mason with a kill of 447, Preston (325), Kanawha
(310), Jackson (291), and Wood (276). Rounding out the top 10 counties
were Marshall (254), Greenbrier (253), Harrison (242), Wyoming (242),
Fayette (237), and Putnam (237).
The 2011 spring kill is the lowest since 1990, when 9,152 birds
were checked. “Let’s hope for a dry June so young poults will
have high survival and bolster populations, although it will
take several years of good brood production to get turkey
numbers to levels they were 10 years ago,” Taylor said.

Youth Hunting Efforts Underway Nationwide
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Efforts to expand youth hunting
opportunities are on the move throughout the country.
These bills, which are in-line with the Families Afield initiative, are
designed to introduce more youth to hunting.
Michigan HB 4371 eliminates the minimum hunting age and creates a
mentored youth hunting program for those less than age 10. This allows
youth to hunt under the supervision of an experienced adult mentor
prior to completing hunter education. HB 4371 recently cleared the
House of Representatives and is now pending in the Senate. Similar
legislation has already cleared the Senate, so further action will be
needed before it is sent to the Governor.
New Jersey SB 2913 would allow the state to offer youth apprentice
licenses for firearms and bow and arrow hunting. The licenses would
allow youth ages 11 to 15 to try hunting under the guidance of an
experienced adult mentor before having to completing hunter education.
SB 2913 is currently pending in the Senate Committee on Environment
and Energy.
New York SB 177 reduces the minimum age for youth to hunt deer or
bear with a bow and arrow from 14 to 12. Under the bill, 12 and 13 year
olds must be accompanied while hunting. SB 177 was recently signed
into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Oklahoma HB 1338 expands the state’s apprentice hunting license to
allow youth ages 8 and 9 to hunt. Currently, only youth 10 and older can
use the apprentice license. HB 1338 was recently signed into law by
Governor Mary Fallin.
Pennsylvania SB 502 would allow the state game commission to
expand the mentored youth hunting program to include adults.
Currently, only those 11 and under are able to participate.
The Families Afield initiative was established by the U.S. Sportsmen’s
Alliance, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and the National
Wild Turkey Federation to bring a new generation of sportsmen to the
field. Along with the National Rifle Association and the Congressional
Sportsmen’s Foundation, the Families Afield coalition has worked to
pass measures in 32 states with more than 600,000 apprentice or
mentored hunting licenses sold since the program’s inception.

New York Bills Threaten Sporting Dog Owners
Bills in New York would create new unnecessary regulations for
sporting dog owners.
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Assembly Bill 7964, introduced by
Assemblyman Joseph S. Saladino (R- Massapequa) would require
anyone that houses dogs or other animals in a permanent structure to
have a working “fire suppression” system and have an alarm system that
connects directly to the police or fire department. Only “farms” are
exempted from the requirements.

“The bill would require anyone who keeps a single dog in
their home to outfit their home with a sprinkler system and a
monitored alarm system,” said Evan Heusinkveld, U.S.
Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state services.
“These requirements are not only wholly unnecessary, but
would prove costly for both kennels and pet owners.”
Senate Bill 5467, introduced by Senator Tom O’Mara (R- Horseheads),
would allow any person to enter the property of a dog owner that houses
more than 12 adult animals, or 9 animals and produces three or more
litters per year, to provide the animals with food or water if the person
claims that the animals have been without necessary food or water for
more than 12 hours.
Essentially, this language allows any person, whether they are an animal
rights activist or a law enforcement officer, to enter into these dog
owners’ property if they simply claim a dog has not been provided with
necessary food or water for 12 hours.
“Allowing any person to enter a dog owner’s land by claiming
dogs are not properly fed or watered is a major violation of
privacy rights,” said Heusinkveld.
Senate Bill 5467 would also require the Commissioner of Agriculture and
Markets to establish new standards of care, housing, and record keeping
requirements for all dog owners, regardless of the number of dogs they
own. It is essentially a “blank check” for the commissioner to force new
regulations upon anyone owning a single dog.
Take Action! New York sportsmen should contact their state legislators
and ask that they oppose Assembly Bill 7964 and Senate Bill 5467. Tell
them these bills will establish new costly and unnecessary requirements
for dog owners. To find your state legislator’s phone number and other
contact information, use the USSA Legislative Action Center at

Is The NRA Talking Out Of BothSides Of Their MouthJUN 03, 2011 03:44P.M.
Is The NRA Talking Out Of Both Sides Of Their Mouth
National Association for Gun Rights
Colorado -–(Ammoland.com)- As I told you last week, during Senate
debate on the mis-named “Patriot Act,” Senator Rand Paul (R-KY)
introduced an amendment to protect gun owners’ firearm purchase
records from the warrant-less searches authorized by the mis-named
“Patriot” Act.
U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), pictured here with NAGR Director of
Operations Luke O’Dell, is a true champion for gun owners.
That sounds like a good cause for Second Amendment groups to get
behind, right?
That’s why the National Association for Gun Rights, other active gun
groups and Senate leaders like Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Mike Lee (R-UT),
all got behind the Paul Amendment.
But not the NRA.
They criticized Senator Paul for his efforts and OPPOSED the
amendment!
And they did it publicly, in a letter that gave cover to every weak-kneed
and anti-gun Senator to vote against the Paul Amendment.
The NRA claimed they “could not support” an amendment which only
sought to exempt firearm purchases from Patriot Act provisions.
In true Orwellian fashion, the NRA told Senators that Paul’s amendment,
“encourages the government to use provisions in current law that allow
access to firearms records without reasonable cause, warrant, or
judicial oversight of any kind.”
Even a cursory review of Paul’s amendment would have shown that it
was written to prevent the very thing that the NRA claimed it was
fostering!
Sen. Paul’s amendment said “nothing in the USA PATRIOT Act… shall
authorize the investigation or procurement of firearms records which is
not authorized under chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code.”
In other words, no warrant-less fishing expeditions of gun owners’
records — which is exactly what Chapter 44 of Title 18 prevents.
Think about that for a minute.
Rand Paul, champion of Second Amendment freedoms, desired to add a
provision to legislation which would protect gun owners and firearms
purchase records from the warrant-less searches authorized by the mis-
named “Patriot” Act…
…and the NRA opposed it.
I would like to tell you that I think they have some sort of strategy here,
but I’ll be honest, I’m struggling to see what it is.
My phones here have been ringing off the hook with people calling in and
asking what in the world the NRA is thinking.
And I haven’t even told you the strangest part.
The day after the vote on Paul’s amendment, the NRA’s Institute for
Legislative Action released a press release that — you guessed it —
confirmed Senator Paul’s concerns regarding Federal law enforcement
agencies targeting law-abiding American gun owners.
They reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the ATF have
been circulating flyers demanding gun shops report “suspicious”
customers to their “local Joint Terrorism Task Force.”
Their criteria for what constituted a “suspicious” person?
• paying in cash instead of credit cards
• an interest in concealed weapons
• purchasing large quantities of ammunition
• traveling “great” distances to use shooting ranges
• Knowing little about firearms
Gun shops are filled with law-abiding Americans — many of whom frown
on debt and pay with cash — who are purchasing concealed weapons for

10
self-defense and trying to learn as much as they can about firearms.
So on one day, the NRA publicly stated that they couldn’t support Rand
Paul’s amendment on the basis that it was unnecessary.
And on the very next day their own legislative analysis team echoed
Paul’s concern by stating that certain law enforcement agencies have
gone “overboard” by targeting broad groups of American citizens with
authorities granted by the Patriot Act.
They stated: “Since the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms
and Explosives is responsible for enforcing federal gun laws,
dealers and other federal firearm licensees typically contact
that agency (or state or local police) when they encounter
suspicious customers. So, it raised eyebrows when the FBI
began circulating flyers in gun shops and ranges,
encouraging owners of those businesses to report suspicious
customers to ‘your local Joint Terrorism Task Force’
instead.”
It is virtually certain that these same “suspicious” American citizens
would then be tracked using provisions of the mis-named Patriot Act.
I cannot tell you what insider game NRA lobbyists may have thought
they were playing.
What I can tell you with utmost certainty, however, is that the National
Association for Gun Rights will never, ever compromise when it comes to
Second Amendment freedoms. I have built this organization on that
premise, and I will not back down now.
Nor will I ever.
We’re not going to oppose an amendment – sponsored by a hero of
Second Amendment freedoms – in order to curry favor with weak-willed
leadership (of both parties). Frankly, I’d rather close our doors than play
these kinds of parlor tricks.
If you have a spare moment this afternoon, why don’t you click here and
send Senator Rand Paul an e-mail. Please thank him for being a
champion for gun owners.

Liberty Safe Pink Gun Safe Survey Is Now Available Online
Liberty Safe
WESTPORT, Conn. --(Ammoland.com)- Liberty Safes USA, one of the
largest Liberty Gun Safe dealers in the United States, and The Women’s
Outdoor News (The WON) have teamed up to conduct a survey about the
market potential of a gun safe designed specifically for women.
Moises Szarf, Online Marketing Manager for Liberty Safes USA noticed
the surge of websites dedicated to women in the outdoors, and wondered
if the increase in sales of outdoor products specifically for women would
also apply to gun safes, which he markets. The idea came to fruition
when Mr. Szarf met Barbara Baird, Publisher of The WON, who was
enthusiastic about the survey from the get-go.
“There are already many firearms and other outdoor
equipment companies marketing a variety of products for
women, so I thought it would be cool to create a survey to test
the waters for something like a gun safe for women, too. We
are just asking simple questions. We would like to know
about purchase decisions, color preferences, price
preferences, things like that, and see how it goes. We’ve called
it the Pink Gun Safe Survey just to make a catchy name and
headline, but that doesn’t mean we favor that color,” Szarf
said.
“When Moises approached me with the idea of doing a survey
for a women’s gun safe, I felt that it was something worth
pursuing. It’s just the kind of thing that gets lots of responses
on our website, and I am curious to find out what our
members and beyond think about the proposition,” said
Baird. The WON and Liberty Safes USA are joining forces to
spread the news about the survey, and hope to capitalize on
the experience for potential future collaborations.
“We’ll keep the survey posted until we get enough responses

to get a really good idea of what women look for when
considering the purchase of a gun safe,” said Baird. “We’re
sure it will not be a ‘Hello Kitty’ safe, like Moises first joked
about when the topic came up!”

Delaware’s Spring TurkeySeason Enjoys Eighth-StraightRecord HarvestJUN 03, 2011 11:49A.M.
Delaware’s Spring Turkey Season Enjoys Eighth-Straight
Record Harvest
Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife
Delaware --(Ammoland.com)- For the eighth straight year, Delaware’s
wild turkey season has set a new harvest record – bringing more
prominence to one of the state’s most successful wildlife restoration
programs as it coincides with DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife’s
celebrating its first century of conservation service.
The spring wild turkey season tallied 487 birds, surpassing last year’s
harvest by more than 100 gobblers, and included a 25½-pound tom shot
by a first-time turkey hunter that was the largest in the state this year.
“The turkey harvest really started climbing in 2004 and we
have experienced a remarkable 350 percent increase in just
eight years,” said Fish & Wildlife game biologist Matt DiBona.
“While we can’t predict what our maximum harvest level
might be, we feel that the turkey population is growing, along
with hunter interest, so there might be more record seasons
to come.”
A number of nice gobblers were recorded this year, the largest the
25½-pound tom taken by Jamie West of Milton.
“I talked to Jamie a couple of weeks after the season, and he
was still pretty excited about his accomplishment on his first
time out,” said Fish & Wildlife program manager Ken
Reynolds. “I think Jamie’s now a committed turkey hunter.”
With Delaware hunters permitted to take only one turkey per season,
almost 500 hunters scored with the big birds.
Rob Gano of Frankford took the turkey with the longest beard at 16-1/16
inches. Jay Hastings of Delmar had the longest spur lengths with a
matched set measuring 1-13/16 inches each. The top overall scoring bird
as measured using the National Wild Turkey Federation formula was
taken by Mark Fenimore of Clayton. This system takes into account
weight, total spur length and total beard length. Mr. Fenimore’s bird
weighed 23 lb. 7 oz., had a total spur length of 2-1/16 inches and had five
beards with a total length of 39-3/16 inches for a score of 122.4375
points.
Birds were harvested in 16 of the 17 management zones in the state but
several areas stood out as turkey “hotspots.” Zones 4, 6, and 11 accounted
more than a third – 38 percent – of the total statewide harvest. Zone 1,
which is New Castle County north of the Canal, was the only zone where
no birds were taken.
Biologists weren’t surprised to find that nine in 10 birds were taken on
private land. But given the limited amount of public land in Delaware
and the limited number of turkey-hunting permits available, hunters also
did well on state-managed property. Fifty-one birds were bagged on
public lands, another new record. Redden State Forest, the Midlands
Wildlife Area and the Norman G. Wilder Wildlife Area were the top three
producing sites. Birds were also taken on the following wildlife areas:
Assawoman, Nanticoke, Marshy Hope, Milford Neck, Little Creek, Cedar
Swamp, Blackiston and Ted Harvey.
With the Delaware Game and Fish Commission having been established
in 1911, the Division of Fish & Wildlife is now celebrating 100 years of
fish and wildlife conservation.
“There have been many noteworthy conservation
accomplishments during this century, and the restoration of
the wild turkey definitely ranks high among them,” said Greg
Moore, Wildlife Section administrator. “We look forward to
having this magnificent game bird around for many years to
come.”
For hunters planning ahead, Delaware’s 2012 turkey season will run
from April 14 – May 12, with the special youth and disabled hunter day
set for April 7. Also: a reminder for hunters aiming to pursue wild turkey
for the first time in Delaware that a one-day turkey hunter education

Wildlife in Flooded Areas Should Be Left Alone
Floods Displace Wildlife; Resist Urge to “Help”
South Dakota Fish, Game & Parks
PIERRE, S.D. --(Ammoland.com)- The South Dakota Game, Fish and
Parks Department reports that wildlife is being displaced due to flood
waters, and the public should keep a healthy distance from these
animals.
The number of calls about fawns and other wildlife from woody areas
now filled with flood waters have increased tremendously.
“The best thing people can do is leave wildlife where they find
it, even if it appears to be displaced by flood waters, as there
is a very good chance the mother will be back for it” Ron
Schauer, GFP Regional Wildlife Manager in Sioux Falls, said.
The number of calls about “abandoned” fawns is on the rise
in GFP offices, he said.
There may be health risks from handling wildlife, including rabies from
animals like skunks. In addition, it is illegal for individuals to remove
and possess deer fawns from the wild, he said, even if they look
abandoned or displaced.
“Due to the very low chances of surviving in the wild after
being raised in captivity, the best care they can receive is from
their own parents or in the wild,” he said.

Michigan DNR & U.S. Fish and Wildlife Announce Information
Meeting on Wolf Delisting Proposal
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Michigan Department of Natural
Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announce a public
information meeting about the Service’s recent proposal to remove
Endangered Species Act protection for the gray wolf in the western Great
Lakes region, including Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The meeting will take place on June 16, 2011, from 6 pm to 9 pm at
Northern Michigan University’s University Center, Michigan Room, 540
West Kaye Avenue, in Marquette, Michigan.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to view a presentation,
receive information and ask questions about the Service’s proposal.
The proposal, published May 5, 2011, in the Federal Register, identifies
the Western Great Lakes Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of wolves,
which includes a core area of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, as
well as parts of adjacent states that are within the range of wolves
dispersing from the core recovery area. The proposal would remove ESA
protection and return wolf management to appropriate state and tribal
authorities.
The proposal also recognizes the presence of two species of wolves in the
western Great Lakes area: the gray wolf (Canis lupus), the wolf species
currently listed under the ESA, and the eastern wolf (Canis lycaon), with
a historical range that includes portions of eastern Canada and the

northeastern United States. Recent wolf genetic studies indicate that
what was formerly thought to be a subspecies of gray wolf (Canis lupus
lycaon) is actually a distinct species (Canis lycaon). To establish the
status of this newly recognized species, the Service is initiating a review
of C. lycaon throughout its range in the United States and Canada.
The Service is seeking information from governmental agencies, Native
American tribes, scientific community, industry and any other interested
parties on threats, population trends, and other data that could affect the
long-term survival of the Western Great Lakes DPS of the gray wolf. The
Service is also seeking information on the status of the eastern wolf
(Canis lycaon) throughout its range in the United States and Canada.
Written comments may be submitted by one of the following
methods:
• Federal eRulemaking Portal: www.regulations.gov. Follow the
instructions for submitting comments to Docket No. [FWS-R3-ES-

Following the close of the public comment period on July 5, 2011, the
Service will analyze information received and develop a final rule. The

Publisher Barbara Baird said, “When we launched The WON
