Original position of the 3rd Arkansas and 27th NC on September 17, 1862

The 2 regiments joined Cobb’s Brigade as they crossed Hagerstown Pike.

A split-rail fence lined the road during the Battle of Antietam.

The 3rd Arkansas traversed this knoll in their advance toward Mumma’s Farm.

Continuing the advance over the crest of this ridge and into Mumma’s swale.

Going up and over the ridge.

Continuing the advance.

The Antietam Visitor Center is beyond the stand of trees.

Beyond the crest of that ridge lies Mumma’s swale.

The end of a long, uphill doubletime.

The first view down into the battlefield.

Continuing the advance, and now within firing range of Union batteries.

3rd Arkansas and 27th NC are turned east by advancing Federal troops

Their next barrier is the fence rail at Mumma’s Lane.

Mumma’s Lane

The tree line over there is as far as the 3rd Arkansas advanced on Sept. 17th.

Placing a flag in memory of the 3rd Arkansas at Mumma’s Lane
