Old-Time Jobs ThatAre New Again
Despite economic changes andadvances in technology, manytraditional jobs that began decadesor centuries ago are seeing a boostin business.
Butcher. Before supermarketswere common, neighborhoodbutchers prepared fresh cuts ofmeat for customers. With many oftoday’s consumers desiring locallysourced food, butcher shops aremaking a comeback.
Blacksmith. The ancient practiceof forging objects from iron nearlyfaded away when machines begandoing the work, but a trend inhandcrafted metalwork has revivedthe trade.
Milkman. Many homes had freshbottles of milk delivered to theirdoor until grocery stores andrefrigerators made the servicenearly obsolete by the 1970s. Thecurrent farm-to-table movement
has some farms offering homedelivery of their milk anddairy products.
Cobbler. Shoemakers have beenmaking footwear by hand forcenturies, and specialty shops stillcater to customers who wanthandmade goods or prefer to repairrather than replace a pair of shoes.
Barber. In years past, barbersprovided a haircut and a shave aswell as a shop where men couldsocialize. The profession is surgingagain, with modern updates ontraditional services.
Chimney sweep. Since theinvention of fireplaces, there’sbeen a need to clean out soot-filledchimneys. Today’s chimney sweepsalso diagnose problems andperform repairs.

Canine War HeroesMilitary working dogs have a long
legacy of brave acts during combat.During National Service Dog Monthin September, salute some ofhistory’s heroic canines:
Sallie. A Staffordshire bull terrier,Sallie was the mascot of the11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantryduring the Civil War. At the Battle ofGettysburg, she was separated fromher unit and discovered three dayslater guarding wounded soldiers. Abronze statue of Sallie is part of amonument at the historic battle site.
Stubby. This stray bull terrier muttgained fame for his courageousdeeds in World War I. His sharphearing and sense of smell warnedArmy troops of incoming shells and
gas attacks, and he once caught anenemy spy by the seat of the pants.Stubby received numerous honors, including the rank of sergeant, andlater served as GeorgetownUniversity’s mascot.
Chips. Trained as an Armysentry, Chips was a mix ofGerman shepherd, collie and husky. He became the most famousmilitary dog of World War II for hisheroism at the 1943 invasion ofSicily, where he charged intogunfire to attack enemy soldiers, forcing their surrender.
Nemo. While serving as a sentryin the Air Force during the VietnamWar, this German shepherd showedgreat bravery and loyalty when heand his handler were hit by enemyfire. Despite severe injuries, Nemoleaped at their attackers, givingthe airman time to radio forreinforcements. The dog thencovered his handler’s body withhis own until help arrived.
