The battle of Shiloh was a series of three main battles in Sharpsville, Tennessee. Grant, a Union Commander, was holding ground well until the weather forced him and his army to set up camp and wait for General Buell’s reinforcements..

Waiting and weak, Johnston’s Confederate army intended to strike them at Pittsburgh landing that night

this battle began April 6, 1862 early morning and lasted until night

South western Tennessee Sharpsville

…was near a small church on the west bank of the Tennessee River. The

Confederates struck, wanting to drive the Union defenders away from the river and

into the swamps of Owl Creek to the west, before Buell’s army arrived.

Instead they fell northeast onto “the Hornet’s Nest”, a sunken road.

General Johnston was killed by a stray bullet during the day. Beauregard, his second in command, decided not to go through with the assassination of the

final Union army

The confederates had to retreat and had no hope in blocking the

Union advance into northern Mississippi.
