DESCRIPTION

This case study looks at how one hospital used real-time data streaming from health monitors to detect infections sooner. This was especially effective in the neonatal intensive care unit. Watch a video or read the complete case study at ibm.co/bighealth Art & animation by Angela Tuminello

Big Data in Healthcare

University of Ontario Institute of Technology:Real-time Health Monitoring and Intervention

There is boundless data in healthcare about every patient, condition, procedure and drug across multiple providers and organizations.

The ability to access, manage, connect and understand this data to create actionable insights is critical to

improving care and outcomes.

Real-time Health Monitoring and Intervention

Nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infection can be fatal to fragile patients like premature infants.

IBMbigdatahub.com

Monitors record data indicating subtle changes in the vital signs of

infected infants 12 to 24 hours before any outward symptoms appear.

IBMbigdatahub.com

These changes are not significant enough to trigger an alert, and the flow

of data is too rapid and abundant for the human mind to process in time.

IBMbigdatahub.com

So this information, which could stop an infection from becoming life-threatening,

goes unnoticed.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology teamed with IBM Research and the Toronto Sick Kids hospital to develop a

highly flexible platform, Project Artemis, aimed at helping physicians make better, faster

decisions in patient care.

IBMbigdatahub.com

Project Artemis’ first test was to determine how to

detect nosocomial infection sooner, taking advantage of the streaming physiological

data from monitors.

Using specially-designed algorithms to perform real-time analytics,

Project Artemis can spot certain anomalies as soon as they appear.

IBMbigdatahub.com

As a result, physicians can provide critical treatment to

infants up to 24 hours before the infection gets worse—

making a life-saving difference.

Different organizations are now utilizing Project Artemis’ early-warning capabilities for other conditions that can be detected through subtle changes in data streams, such as brain ischemia and cardiac care.

The IBM big data platform extends the value of your existing technology by tapping into all traditional and non-traditional sources of data and effectively managing, integrating, governing and performing analytics on this

torrent of complexity and data growth.
