James DeMars (b.1952)
Composer/conductor James DeMars belongs to ageneration that is revealing a new integration ofworld music with the range, depth and stylistic vari-ety of the classical tradition. His works include or-chestral concertos for violin, piano, African drumensemble, pow-wow singers, Native American flute, several cantatas, a requiem mass and an opera.
Ensembles that perform DeMars' music includethe New York Choral Society, Brooklyn Philhar-monic, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Symphony,Philadelphia Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic,Phoenix Symphony, California Symphony, ChicagoSinfonietta, Tucson Symphony, Anchorage Sym-phony, Choer et Orchestre Francais D'Oratorio(Paris), Wuppertal (Germany) Orchestra.

As a conductor, DeMars' performances include the national premiere of his work, AnAmerican Requiem, at the Kennedy Center in Washington and nationally televised per-formances at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. In 1998 he conducted the Eu-ropean premiere of the requiem in Paris at Église La Trinité with Choer et OrchestreFrancais D'Oratorio and was inducted to the French Order of Arts and Letters.
With Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai he has created four CDs for CanyonRecords. Two World Concerto received two Native American Music Awards and led to the2008 release of DeMars' inter-cultural opera, GUADALUPE. In 2010 he received the Ari-zona Artist of the Year Governor's Award.
Aesthetic influences include the writings of Joseph Campbell and Albert Camus. Heholds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota and currently teaches composition atArizona State University in Tempe
About An American RequiemCommissioned in 1993 by the Art Renaissance Foundation, James DeMars produced
this amazing work with the hope that it would contribute to bringing the American com-munity together. Hugely ambitious and soundly constructed, the 75-minute choral worktook a full year to be written and orchestrated. It is a stylistically eclectic, strongly ap-proachable offering in four parts, interpolating English and Latin texts in an attempt to re-flect the diversity of our nation’s cultural and religious life.

“ At the close of last night’s premiere performance therecould have been little doubt that James DeMars had metthe standards of the deathmasses of Brahms and Britten;grand and spacious, stately, ethereal, glorious, inspired andquintessentially American. Itspeaks of untarnished dreamsand naïve yearnings; an intensely hopeful conjuration of all that is best about the nation’s peoples.”— Washington Post
