This was created for an internal company introduction to using social media, specifically Facebook and Twitter. At the time, most of our employees were not using SM personally or professionally. It is a 101-type session on navigating and understanding basic SM environments.

• The same people can be in multiple categories

Posting—The whole idea behind social media

• Social media would not exisit with out people “Sharing”

• You can share text, photos, links, video or other social media applications (i.e. Farmville, ESPN U, Mob Wars, etc.)

• By sharing items, you post them on your “Wall” as well as your friends “News Feed”

Commenting—The whole OTHER idea behind social media

• Commenting on posts is part of the “Social” side of social media

• You can see posts by others not in your network

• “Liking” is a way to comment without actually writing anything.

Posting—Using lists

• This will determine what groups can and cannot see your posts

Tagging Photos

• Allows you to identify people in the photo.

• Person has to be one of your “Friends”

• You can comment on photos the same way as your wall

• You can “Un-Tag” yourself if you want

• Gives us a presence in the space and gives us another good communication channel

• Messaging and content is geared toward the personality and employees of C&C

• As of right now, we do not have any C&C SM Guidelines, but we are looking into them

• You follow others because you want to hear what they have to say.

• Tweets are sent with the goal to have your followers “re-tweet” it—send out to their network

• Usually more frequent posting—you can get overwhelmed by an active poster

• Content tweeted properly can be searched and indexed

• Can be used to directly communicate with someone

Finding people to follow

• Twitter will give you suggestions based on:

• Your interests

• Popular members

• People you already follow

• You can search for accounts you may know

• You can easily follow and un-follow people until you find your right mix.

• Following too many people can cause too much noise and make you feel overwhelmed

Twitter is basically a 2-lane highway

Neither way of using is wrong.

• Don’t post often or at all

• Be a “Consumer”—a Listener

• Get information from those you follow

• Post quality content regularly

• Be a “Contributor”

• Have your tweets re-tweeted by your followers

• RT posts of those you follow

• Grow your network

• Content made up of:

• Text • Links—Sites/Photos/Videos • Mentions • Hash Tags

• Re-tweets (RT)—Passing along someone else’s tweet to your followers

RT Re-Tweet• CGraves is not in my network, but OgilvyWW is.

• They felt this tweet was important enough to share with their network

• CGraves will get a notification his Tweet was RT’ed by Ogilvy.

Tracking all of this

• Tabs allow me to see where my tweets and mentions are happening.

• It is good Twitter etiquette to thank those for their mentions and RTs
