“A leader is one who guides and directs other people. He gives efforts of his followers a direction and purpose by influencing their behaviour.”-Louis A. Allen.

“A great leader shows the ability to make decisions and act boldly in the face of setbacks and adversity” – Kautilya,

• Based on modernism & initiative (Leaders are forward looking and full of initiative.)

• Based on creative destruction (Leaders are open to the process of destroying existing business modules to make way for the new one.)

• Based on capability to communicate (Leaders are communicate aggressively , they vision, mission and philosophy.)

• Based on managing complexity (Leaders are made things simple by cutting through bureaucracy.)

• Based on role model definition (Leaders willing to play role of ideal citizen.)

• -Leadership cannot be taught but it can be learned• -No substitute for learning from experience but

needs to be situated in a planned and integrated model of leadership development

• -Learning from experience affected by the amount of challenge, variety of task and feedback quality

• -Leadership theory helps leaders make sense of their development as leaders, challenges their assumptions and opens up new horizons

What makes “Successful Leadership” remain a hotly debated topic

• Leadership is not just about talent, intelligence, or charisma.

• Winning leaders usually are those who bring forth a rare mix of vision ,passion and drive.

• These intangibles motivate ,excite and drive others to relate to a grand vision.

• Leadership, then , is not about maths and science alone. It is about the human touch that converts efforts into result, and talent into magic.

• In a commoditized off-the-shelf world, leadership is all about creating lasting competitive advantage

Person : is it WHO ‘leaders’ are that makes them leaders?

Result : is it WHAT ‘leaders’ achieve that makes them leaders?

Process : is it HOW ‘leaders’ get things done that makes them leaders?

Position : is it WHERE ‘leaders’ operate that makes them leaders? (Keith Grint, 2005)

What is leadership ?

“The process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts toward goal setting and goal achievement”

(Stogdill, 1950,)

Three key components to this definitions : - an interpersonal process between one person and a group

- can’t have ‘leaders’ without ‘followers’

- criterion for effective leadership = goal achievement

What is leadership ?

• “Leadership is a process by which an executive imaginatively directs , guides and influences the work of others in choosing and attaining specified goals by mediating between the individuals and the organization in such a manner that both will obtain maximum satisfaction.” – Theo Haimann.

• Leadership as “a process of influence on a group in a particular situation at a given point of time and in a specific set of circumstances that stimulates people to strive willingly to attain organizational objectives , giving them experience of helping to attain the common objectives and satisfaction with the type of leadership provided.” -James Gibbin

Leadership

• Leadership is a psychological process of influencing followers or sub-ordinates and providing guidance to them.

• It is always related to a situation which means a leader may be effective in one situation while ineffective in another.

• To be effective , a leader should change his leadership style depending upon the requirements of the situations.

Importance of Leadership Leadership helps an organization in the following ways:

• Determination of goals • Organization Activities • Achieving coordination & cooperation• Representation of workers • Providing Guidance• Inspiration of employees • Building employees Morale • Facilitating Change• Creates confidence• Provides good working climate
