Ron Andrews Beaudesert U3A welcomes back the above member this year, and we hope that your association with our organization will be a long and fruitful one. We look forward to your involvement.
Editorial Aahh—School Holidays, aren’t they great..?? We older members of the community get to see a bit more of our grandchildren as we do a stint of baby sitting, or “teenager control“ if the age group is right. Hard to believe that they grow up so fast, and sometimes they are a bit reluctant to spend a lot of time with we “old fogies“......Fortunately, the Beaudesert Swimming Pool is now open for the new season, just in time to be an attraction (or diversion) for the school holidays. For the first time we also have a Public Holiday in Queensland in October, after the move of Labour Day from the first Monday in May to the first Monday in October- the 6th October this year. This extends the school holiday break by an extra day. I personally believe that it is a great idea to have a public holiday in the back half of the calendar year, taking a bit of pressure off the multiple short weeks which used to run together so often when Easter fell close to Anzac Day and Labour Day. The U3A 4th term commences on the 7th October, in line with the school curriculum, and one of the old favorites, Aqua Aerobics, will be up and running again from the 8th October. This group activity is on offer twice a week, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7.30 to 8.30, with Flipper action from 7.15am. Contact Trish Fraser on 0417 440584 for details. Finally, the Beaudesert Show is all done and dusted for another year, and I must say that I think it was one of the best I have seen. The idea of having the show visitors entering via the pavilion was very successful, creating a lot more traffic into the display area. A “well done“ to all the organizers and exhibitors, and congratulations to the prize winners, some of whom are U3A members... Until next Newsletter....Andy Fechner. .

.Social Tennis
By majority decision, the U3A Social Tennis Group
has decided to continue tennis into October and
beyond, weather permitting. Initially planned as a
cooler weather activity, the players are enjoying it so
much that it has been extended until further notice.
This will still be at the present venue on Wednesdays
from 9.00am to 12.00noon.
Ball fees remain the same until replacement balls are
required, then a small additional fee will be needed to
replace them. I am gratified to see the vast
improvement in the beginners who have attended
this activity, and the old skills returning to some of the
past players.
Come along and enjoy the great outdoors and the
companionship associated with this group.

Our U3A Country Conference
On Friday 5th September, your Beaudesert branch hosted the annual U3A S.E. Qld. Regional Country Conference at Centacare, our “Showcase“ event. Attendees from Roma, Toowoomba, Boonah, Warwick, Jimboomba, Mt. Tamborine, Redlands, North Gold Coast, Brisbane and Broadbeach joined with local Beaudesert members to have 35 excited people set to enjoy a day of discussions and guest speakers after a delicious morning tea. The conference was opened by the State Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause, who along with local Councillor and Honorary member Jennifer Sanders, welcomed all visitors to the area. After some hilarity viewing a couple of short movies produced by the Scenic Rim Regional Council on the U3A, attendees were divided into groups for discussion. Group members brainstormed through a session then tabled all the results into a working paper. Our feature guest speaker was Peter Crowe, General Manager of Marketing for Bidvest Australia. Along with many community groups, U3A faces the problem of how best to market, advertise and sell themselves. Peter’s talk was an eye opener on the upcoming generation who are “tech savvy“ and will soon enough form the demographic of retirees and subsequently potential future U3A members. After a well presented lunch, Rhonda Weston, President of U3A Network Queensland and currently Chair of U3A Network Australia, addressed the conference. Her talk featured the information that U3A Queensland will be hosting the 2015 U3A International Conference in May next year in Brisbane at the City Hall. Our final discussion group session focussed on marketing solutions for U3A, and again the results were added to the working paper. The conference wound up with a talk by Andy Fechner on his experiences in surviving Cyclone Tracy in Darwin along with his wife and children in 1974. We extend a special vote of thanks to Kylie Parnaby at Centacare who along with Sharon Redmond produced an excellent morning tea and lunch for all delegates. In addition, we also thank both Bidvest Australia and the Scenic Rim Regional Council for providing tote bags and promotional items for all delegates. Finally, thank you to the U3A Beaudesert Committee members, partners and Friends of the Committee without whose help this conference could not have taken place. Andy Fechner. President U3A Beaudesert.

Aqua Aerobics
Ditch your jeans and winter woolies, (some might need to get out their epilady-razor), the time has come to allow some Vitamin D onto your body. Men are exempt from shaved legs unless cycling. Some of the girls and guys are ready to break the ice and start their sessions in the pool again. I have had lots of enquiries. Hope they are keen when they hit the water. (The instructor can always teach from the pool deck. Brrrrr!!!) Starting Day: Wednesday the 8th October, at 7.15 am. Mike is happy for us to do some laps, with our flippers and kickboards, or just swim before our class. Aqua class 7.30 to 8.30am Wednesday and Friday. Dig out your Aqua water weights and join us for a fun time. It is a great form of exercise without the pressure on your limbs. Our tongues still seem to get a good workout though!! The men feel a little outnumbered, so we encourage any male U3A members to join us. Cost: Admission to pool: Age pensioner $2.50 (Centrelink pensioner card must be provided). Adult: $3.50 Contact Trish Fraser 0417 440584
Line Dancing We will continue our dancing through to November, when it gets too hot for us. We are learning some new dances, so be sure to join us on Tuesday afternoons from 2.30 to 4.00pm. First day back for the 4th term is 7th October. Are there any dancers interested in going to the RSL on Friday nights for a practice night occasionally?? Talk to me....It is a long time between breaks and some of us forget the routines. (I wonder who??) Trish Fraser 0417 440584
Showtime Winners
As stated earlier, some our members were worthy prize winners with their exhibits at the recent Beaudesert Show: Limners: Jo Weymouth, Naomi Wheatley and Mike Goebel Mosaics: Michele Goucher Quilting: Trish Fraser. Our congratulations to our fellow U3A members on their efforts, and apologies if we have omitted anyone. However: you can send any information to be published to: andyfechner@bigpond.com
Genealogy Group
The group has been busy visiting venues to take their research further. On Thursday 11
th September
we visited Logan Central Library where their new Family Studies Manager, Sue Prenzler, made us welcome and assisted our research. On Thursday 25
th September a visit was undertaken
to the Mormon Family Research Centre at Karawatha. We were assisted by Lynn and Wilma and the group managed to find information to take their records further. These trips were an enjoyable adjunct to our research and the fellowship between members of the group was very pleasing to me. The Logan Central Library has organised a visit by Stephanie Ryan from the Qld. State Library on Friday 5
th December. Stephanie will give a talk about
researching Emigration and Shipping Records. The talk will be from 10.30am – noon and bookings can be made by phoning 3412 4165 or emailing localstudies@logan.qld.gov.au. I know how difficult it is to find this information and I am sure our members will find the talk beneficial. Tricia Edward—Ph.5544 1462
Art Appreciation
In October we will be visiting The Centre in Beaudesert to view an exhibition by Edwin Bode. Some members will remember we visited his grave at Wonglepong Cemetery when we visited the army museum at Canungra some time ago. I am sure it will be great to see an exhibition of his works. This excursion will take place on 15
th October and you
should contact me if you are interested in joining us. Our last get together for the year will be on the 19
th
November when we will meet at Centacare to view the remaining part of the DVD which was our August meeting. The works of Rembrandt will be featured at this meeting and will bring together where Rubens and Van der Meer used Rembrandt’s work to enhance their own works. That brings me up to date and I look forward to welcoming members of the group and any others interested but please contact me to let me know. Tricia Edward – ph.55441462 or email shikeo@bigpond.com
Our Generous Donors
We extend a special vote of thanks to the following members who have donated some beautiful art and craft work as prizes for our fundraising raffles: Laurel Fechner....Hand Stitched Quilt Val Chapman.......Mosaic Trivet Jo Weymouth.......Painting Denice Knight......Painting Gwen Elliott.........Painting
Our Kitchens Rule
September Cookery Group It was Biscuit time..!! Yummy Coffee Creams and an old favorite...Melting Moments. These lovely sweet treats were the order of the day at Laurel’s house for our September session, and the eight keen cooks there had no hesitation in getting busy on the recipes. In no time at all the smell of coffee and baking biscuits was in the air as the two groups got busy on their allocated varieties. It wasn’t really a bake off, but comparisons were made between the two resulting finished products. Fortunately our President Andy was at home, and he was able to try both biscuit flavours. Maybe he was just being diplomatic by declaring a draw, but I wonder why he needed seconds to make up his mind...!! Perfect accompaniments for our afternoon tea break!
The happy cooks at it again!!
Two irresistable results.!
For information about the Cookery Group at “Our Kitchens Rule“ call Laurel 5541 2072 or Tina 0418 780 861.
Thank You to Limners...
Our successful, talented (and financial) Limners Art Group recently donated $200 of their accumulated funds to the U3A general coffers to help us fund our recent Showcase Country Conference, and also help us to host our upcoming member‘s Christmas afternoon tea on the 12th December. Don’t forget to support the Limner’s great bus outings / field days when they come along. The costs are small, and any profits go back to the group for future events, or support for the U3A.

Mosaics Talents Shine
This is a mosaic wall plaque created by Val Chapman. Val is one of the many talented members of the U3A Mosaic Group and like most of us had absolutely no knowledge of this art form until joining the group. The work that is now being produced is quite fantastic and also very satisfying for the artist. Why not come along on Mondays at 1.30pm to 20 Lincoln Court Gleneagle. Start with a pot plant or stepping stone, and see how fast you move onto things like the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Be part of a great group of happy people really enjoying themselves. No outlay to start as I have 2 spare sets of cutters, nippers etc., and plenty of tiles for you to smash and turn into a very pretty piece of your own art. Just give me a ring on 5541 0745 for more information...Margaret Kendrick.
A Community Opportunity
The Friends of Beaudesert Library group has a voluntary service which ensures that keen but “housebound” readers at Wongaburra and Star Gardens have a stack of books delivered each month. But there is a shortage of volunteers (as always – tell me about it!) to deliver this reading material, so we are canvassing other groups in town to see if anyone would like to help out. It’s a flexible commitment – regularly once each month, on a regular but occasional basis, or as a stand-in when someone else can’t do the job. If you’re a keen reader and like meeting people, you would enjoy this. The volunteers visit the library, select books according to the requests or taste of the housebound readers, and put them into personal bags for delivery. They then visit the readers to make the delivery and pick up the previous month’s stack of books. If you are interested, please phone or email me: Cheryl Folley 5544 2024 or echeryl2002@yahoo.com.au
Telephone Scam Warning
An old SCAM has just raised its ugly head again. For those of you that have Voice Mail or an Answering Service. A reminder of the details:- A message is left on your system saying “Hey, this is ?????. Sorry I missed you - get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.” (This message can vary in content such as sick relative and family member involved in accident is common). She then repeats a phone number beginning with 0809. Do not dial Area Codes 0809, 0284, and 0876 from the UK, U.S, Australia or Canada unless the number belongs to someone you know. Some of these number are legitimate. Always check your Telephone Bill to ensure you are not charged for one of these numbers. The charges can be
extremely large. The 0809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic...... The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, your local Telephone provider will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Be aware that Australian Government regulations forbid Australian Telco’s from passing these call charges on through their System to you. You can insist that they be removed from your Bill.
