M erry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays and Season’s Greetings. Regardless of the holiday you celebrate or how you wish

others a happy holiday season, we hope that you will be able to embrace and enjoy the festivities around you. From Winterfest to the annual holiday parade down the main highway to your own traditions, our hope is that you all can use this guide when you’re looking for something to help you get in the holiday spirit and help you when you’re stumped about where to buy local gifts.

Within these pages you’ll find a calendar of holiday events from the traditional “The Nutcracker” ballet at Vashon High School and annual tree-lighting cer-emony to the more Vashon-centric Holiday Art Studio Tour and Point Robin-son’s Holiday Open House. For those who give gifts, this guide provides plenty of inspiration, including ideas from island shops and galleries, as well as local food and libations. From locally-made jewelry, pottery and art to decadent sweets or outdoor activities, there is something on the island for everyone on your list.

For those just looking for a festive read to get into the holiday spirit, brush up on the history of the holiday traditions on Vashon, like a lit up deer-shaped pond or a festive tow truck. For those who like humor, read a personal account from an islander whose family has made it their new tradition to find the ugliest Christmas tree on the lot (you need to see the photo).

Happy Holidays from all of us at The Beachcomber. We hope you enjoy flip-ping through the pages of this guide and shopping locally. Have an enjoyable holiday season.

ith over 25 million Christmas trees on the market every year, it’s no surprise that families often squabble when trying to find the one

perfect tree. The long-held family tradition of choos-ing the best often ends up with at least one unhappy face.

Our family fell victim to the Christmas tree tiff for many years. My husband, whose family cel-ebrated Christmas by playing Mitch Miller records once and then putting them away, didn’t waste any warm and fuzzies on the commercial conventions of the season. My family, on the other hand, marked the holiday with over-the-top enthusiasm. So, when we found ourselves on the field of a Christmas tree farm trying to select something we both would like, a lively discussion, or several, ensued. Adding insult to injury for my husband was the price tag attached to the rain-wet boughs.

Our daughter, as any child is apt to do, would often interject a solution, which was met with intermit-tent success until a few years ago. With a wink and a nod, adding a splash of humor to the endeavor, she pointed to a small, misshapen tree with two trunks growing out of one base, like Viking horns — clearly not the classic Christmas tree. After a delightful laugh, I looked over at my husband. His eyes were sparkling. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then

the wonky tree had clearly won his pageant.“Let’s see what they want for this one,” he said. Before we made the first cut, we asked the sellers

what a less-than-perfect specimen might cost.“Depends on the tree,” one said. “Cut it down, and

we’ll see how ugly it is.”Enlivened by the novelty of it all, we scrambled

back to our woebegone evergreen with bow saw in

hand. Soon, my husband was buried under its ir-regular branches cutting the trunk in half.

When presented with our prize, the sellers burst out laughing. And the price?

“That tree? That tree’s 10 bucks ugly.”“Sold,” we said. Back home, wrapped in twinkling lights and

festooned with favorite ornaments gathered over the years, our 10-buck beauty was the star of our Christmas and a humorous topic among our friends and relatives.

And so began a new tradition in our family of choosing imperfect trees. When we presented our special pick the next year, the seller said, “That tree? That tree’s free as long as you don’t tell where you got it.”

By the third year, the tree sellers had caught on that we truly fancied the rejects. We now look forward to discovering the oddest tree on the field or in the lot, knowing that whatever we pick will be lauded with praise and affection.

Vashon has many spots for discovering your own tree, either on a lot or in a field. Even the Boy Scouts get into the act by selling trees in the heart of town. Take a drive down Vashon Highway, and you’re bound to find numerous options for your own kind of tree, whether elegant, Charlie Brown style or “10 bucks ugly.”

Get festive at WinterfestVashon will celebrate its annual

Winterfest weekend Dec. 4 to 6. For young islanders, the highlight

may be Santa’s arrival to the island, but there will be plenty of other activi-ties for people of all ages throughout the weekend. The Gallery Cruise will open the weekend on Friday night. On Saturday, downtown merchants will accept coupons (printed in The Beachcomber) for possible prizes, and the gingerbread tour will be underway at island businesses.

For those looking to be entertained, “The Nutcracker” will be performed at the Vashon High School theater Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the

Vashon Island Chorale will perform holiday concerts on Saturday and Sunday. The Art Studio Tour will also take place that weekend, with shop-ping available.

The heart of the weekend, when Santa comes to town and the town tree is lit, will begin with a parade leaving from IGA at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. The parade will wind its way to the Village Green, where the town tree will be lit and holiday merriment will abound.

Those who would like to provide entertainment for the evening should call the chamber of commerce at 463-6217.

Vashon’s 2015 Holiday Guide

BY BRUCE HAULMAN AND TERRY DONNELLYFOR THE BEACHCOMBER

slanders have always celebrated the change of seasons, even as

the days grow shorter and the rains begin.

The Sqababsh people, a band of the Puyallup Indians native to Vashon, gathered in their permanent village winter houses and told stories.

With American settlement of the island, Thanksgiving and Christmas became the seasonal celebrations that defined the changing season and the coming of winter. As Vashon’s settlers fell into the routine of island life and the holiday season, outdoor, community Christmas trees at Burton, Dockton and Vashon went up along with holiday window displays in island stores. Holi-day church services began; power poles

were festooned with lights and fir swags (later with candy canes), and the obligatory school Christmas pageant was performed. All defined the way Vashon celebrated the holidays in the early 20th century.

Holiday traditions turned to the Gal-lant Lady Christmas Ship cruise around the island in the 1960s and ’70s; Vashon Allied Arts’ annual “The Nutcracker” ballet performances began in 1999, and for a time in more recent years, Vashon elves collected donations at the four-way stop in town.

However, one of the most memo-rable holiday traditions was the annual Holiday Parade with Doc Eastly and his team of shires (originally Russ and Al) pulling the wagon with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus (George and Sandy Eustice), packed with children. Doc began driving the wagon in the parade in 1980 and continued to his last parade

in 2006. Each year, Bettie Edwards and her staff at The Little House decorated the wagon for its trip through down-town Vashon.

Doc would prepare for the parade with a big family chili feed made by his wife Pat. They would head up to the parade, and Doc would don his winter driving gloves, load up the wagon and snap the reins to lead another holiday parade through the streets of Vashon.

Along with the parade, there are two long-standing lighting traditions island-ers look forward to every year: William and Harold Mann’s 1,200 feet of lights outlining the Deer Pond on Cemetery Road (with one red light for Rudolph’s nose) and Lou and Paul Engles’ lighted tow truck towing Santa and his sleigh.

While the holiday traditions have been cheery, the holiday season on Vashon has also been full of memorable storms. The “worst storm in memory”

swept though in 1923 closing both ferry docks and isolating the island for several days. In 1950, over 14 inches of snow blanketed the island and brought everything to a standstill, and Fisher Pond froze solid for six days in 2009.

The holidays have also brought some amazing gifts to the island. The “Christ-mas Miracle” of 1995 saved Island Manor Nursing Home from closing and ultimately created what is now Vashon Community Care, when 30 islanders led by “the Two Teds” (Ted Kutscher and Ted Clabaugh) pledged $10,000 each to keep the nursing home from closing. More recently, Glacier North-west gave up the fight to mine the gravel of Maury Island, and the site became a county park in December 2010.

This year, traditions continue with the Winterfest festival, VAA’s “The Nut-cracker” performances, a tree lighting and a parade featuring Santa Claus.

Whether you take the Tour to just look or to buy gifts for those on your holiday list, the art-work runs the gamut from oil and acrylic paint-ings, to watercolors, photography, tiles, glass, weavings, jewelry, garden art, apparel, ceramics, beeswax candles, encaustics, prints and more.

Several stops include a multitude of artists. Waterworks Studio, off of Dockton Road, exhibits the diverse works of 22 different artists and hosts an opening on First Friday, Dec. 4 dubbed “A Night Circus,” with music and liba-tions. Further south on Maury, in Dockton, a new studio opens its door, showing work by new Islander and ceramic artist Gale Lurie, mixed media artist Lin Holley and painter Rose Belknap. Back on Vashon, at the Willingham Weavery, seven fiber artists demonstrate weaving and ‘demon’ spinning along with finished pieces available for purchase. At the North End, the Grange includes a group of five, working in oil, encaustic, sculpture, watercolor and more. Nearby, Carol Schwennesen opens her studio doors for the first time in nearly 20 years, showing her own work plus that of fellow painters Ann Nicklason and Mary Lawrence.

In town, galleries and shops like Heron’s Nest, Vashon Allied Arts, The Hardware Store Restaurant and Hinge Gallery will show work by Island artists. The Holiday Tour offers visitors the chance to talk with the artists, see where and how they create their work and purchase art directly from them. Most stops also offer holiday treats. The Tour is free and self-guided with brochure maps available at most Island businesses and at all studios on the Tour.

ore than 80 artists exhibit their work at 35 Island locations on the Holiday Art Studio

Tour held the first two weekends in December. The Holiday Tour began over 30 years ago when a small collective of individual artists opened their studio doors for visitors to view and purchase their artwork. Today, the beloved tradition continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5-6 and 12-13.
