BRAINSORMING FOR AN IDEA When asked about the day-to-day problems

that theses kids faced we got to hear of lot of ideas. But what alarmed us was the complete absence of security for these girls at the center. Following were the reason for their unease:

There was no sign on the gate declaring that the ashram compound is private and restricted. Anyone, whether with good or bad intentions, could enter the compound .

BRAINSORMING FOR AN IDEA

There were complaints that boys enter the compound and bother the girls late at night.

There was no compound wall at all around the back of the aashram and the terrain of it was reason enough to be concerned.

Some girls, being really young and naïve, didn’t really understand the dangers that faced them. They told us that they thought that the boys entered the compound to “steal stuff”.

Proposed Solutions We brainstormed with the kids for

solutions and here are the points we came up with.

1. need to contact the local police and persuade them visit the ashram area frequently so as to send a message-trespassing will not be tolerated.

2.To avoid the entry of any unaware soul from intruding into their private space, have a board at the front gate(With proper instructions in Kannada and English.)

3.We need to construct a fence in the backyard to avoid accidents and also to mark the area.

4.We need to teach basic self defense lessons to the kids to prepare them just in case.

IMPLEMENTATIONWe implemented all our ideas in the

following way: We went to the police station with the kids

and persuaded them to make frequent rounds to the ashram area to boost the security.

We conducted a self defense class ,conducted by professionals who taught simple but effective techniques to the kids. All of us learnt some good moves that day!

IMPLEMENTATION

We constructed a fence ourselves such that kids are less prone to accidents. It was a difficult task but the kid’s enthusiasm drove us to complete it.

We put up a board on the front gate cautioning trespassers form entering so that no one mistakenly enters the compound.

RESULT Trespassing reduced immediately and

effectively owing to police intervention and the better security measures. Although this is just a beginning and we hope to do more ( for e.g. we have planned to put broken glasses with cement on the top of the existing boundary) it was sure a start!
