Direct Object Pronouns

SPANISH II/II HONORS

Nombre_______________________________________Fecha_______

Banco de palabras:

Direct Object Pronouns

ME NOS

TE OS

LO, LA LOS, LAS

Direct Object Pronouns

D.O.P.s are pronouns directly act on the verb.

I saw that girl at the movies.

They read the stories to the students.

Direct Object Pronouns

D.O. P.s directly act on the verb and…They answer the questions who? or

what? In the sentence.

Example: I saw the movie last night. WHAT did

you see?

THE MOVIE!!! SO…. if you saw the movie, you saw it. EASY, RIGHT????

So… how do we say it in Spanish???

me noste oslo, la los, las

So… now we have to figure out what the word for movie is in Spanish? Is it cine or pelicula?

Now that we figured that out…what word do you think would best replace that word from the DOP chart above?

THE MOVIE=la pelicula= la (it feminine)

I saw the movie last night. Vi la pelicula anoche.

So where do we put the “la” in our new sentence to say it instead of repeating the word movie?

Placement of DOPS and IOPS and Reflexives:

They go:

1. In front of a conjugated verb. Vi is a conjugated verb. ______ vi anoche.

2. Attached to an infinitive Voy a verla el jueves.

3. Attached to a gerund Estoy viendola ahora.

4. Attached to a command. Vela pronto! Es magnifica!

Ok, so let’s try another one:

We are going to sell the old books at the library.

What word directly acts on the verb?Ask yourself what/who are we going to sell?

DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS

WHAT are we going to sell? THE BOOKS!! What is the word for the books

in Spanish? Da da da da da da da da da da

da da daaaa da da da da da da da da da da da da da dada da da da da…..

Los libros! So…. What would los libros become in the form of a direct object pronoun? Remember those are just the me, te, lo, la, nos, os,

Do I need to the da da again??

So now we’ve come up with los to replace the word los libros…

Where would the “los” go? We have the following: Vamos a vender los libros

Looks like we have two options in this sentence:

In front of the ____________________verb.

Attached to the __________________.

SOOOOOOO…..write your two choices in your notes now….

DOPs placement continued

Los vamos a vender or Vamos a venderlos. One is in front of the conjugated verb…perfectly acceptable….

The other is attached to the infinitive….also perfectly acceptable. So when there is a conjugated verb AND an infinitive in the same sentence, do you get to pick where you will put the pronoun???? Si senor y senorita, you DO!

What if we changed the sentence slightly to …. We are selling the books (them) today.

Estamos vendiendo los libros hoy.

What if we changed the sentence slightly to …. We are selling the books (them) today.

ESTAMOS VENDIENDO LOS LIBROS HOY.

Remember the rules… in front of a conjugated verb or attached to an infinitive or gerund. What’s a gerund??

-ando,-iendo, -yendo are gerunds. This is equivalent to –ing in English.

Let’s translate again: Estamos vendiendo los libros.

Let’s get rid of libros and replace it with what again?

EXACTLY YOU ARE SOOOOO SMART!!

So…according to our rule, the sentence could be:

1.LOS ESTAMOS VENDIENDO

2.ESTAMOS VENDIENDOLOS

What if I need to say they brought me or she saw you?

WHAT WOULD ME BECOME?HOW ABOUT YOU?WHAT ABOUT US, OR YOU ALL?.....

So to conclude:

WE REPLACE OUR WORDS WITH PRONOUNS ALL THE TIME. THIS IS HOW WE REPLACE THE DIRECT OBJECTS IN THE SENTENCE

me = me

nos = us

te= you os = you all

lo, la = it, he, she or ud.

los, las = them or uds.

me noste oslo, la los,

las

Sra. Lee says… U have to memorize these so you don’t do the “flunco flunco!”

So now let’s review:I’m gonna quiz you…take out a sheet of paper and number it 1-5….yes, right now!
