Sea LifeThe under water world is teeming with life. In oceans and seas all over the planet, many different creatures make their homes. Everyday, new creatures are being discovered. Read on to learn more facts about one of these amazing animals…the green sea turtle.

AppearanceThe green turtle is one of the largest sea turtles. Green turtles are named because of the greenish colour of their fat, not their shells. Most green turtles are brown and black or greenish-yellow. Green sea turtles have flippers that allow the turtle to move quickly and easily through the water and, unlike many other turtles, green sea turtles cannot pull their head into their shell.

HabitatGreen turtles are found mainly in tropical waters. They are sometimes found in the Mediterranean Sea and have even been found in the sea around Great Britain. Adult turtles migrate over very long distances between their feeding grounds and the beaches from where they hatched.

DietAdult green turtles are herbivores. They feed mainly on seagrass or algae. They have powerful jaws to help them tear up their food. Healthy green turtles live a very long time. Some can live 80-100 years or even more!

ThreatsGreen turtles are endangered. They are threatened by hunters, by being caught in fishing equipment and by the destruction of their eggs.
