FLUORINEJustin Marshall

Origin of the Name From the Latin “fluere” meaning “to flow”

Discovery The mineral Fluorite (Calcium Fluoride)

was first discovered in 1530 by Georgius Agricola

Due to its high reactivity, it was not isolated until 1886 by Henri Moissan

Properties of Fluorine It is a pale, yellow gas. Fluorine changes from a gas to a liquid at

a temperature of -188.13 degrees Celsius.

It changes from a liquid to a solid at -219.61 degrees Celsius

Fluorine is the most reactive element Its density is .001696 grams per cubic

centimeter

Limitations Since Fluorine is the most reactive

element, it is very dangerous to work with.

Many chemists died or were seriously injured trying to isolate Fluorine.

Isotopes The only naturally occurring isotope of

Fluorine is Fluorine-19 Only one radioactive isotope of Fluorine

has been prepared, Fluorine-18

Availability Fluorine never exists as a free element It is usually found in minerals It’s the 13th most abundant element in

the earths crust, estimated at about .06 percent in the earth

It costs 190 dollars for 100 grams

How to get Fluorine Fluorine is made by Moissan’s method of

passing an electric current through a mixture of hydrogen fluoride and potassium hydrogen fluoride.

Uses Fluorine is used in rocket fuel because of

its high reactivity Fluorine is also used in uranium

purification Fluorine is found in toothpaste, as a tooth

whitening agent

Interesting Facts about Fluorine

It is the most reactive element It is the only element to react with Xenon
