The Canal linking Nantes to Brest is an invitation to relax in orderto discover the unsuspected treasures of inland Brittany ; it is likegoing back to one’s roots. This 360 km long waterway runs throughthe counties of Brittany from East to West, providing a uniqueopportunity to experience the environment of the region at a slowwalking, biking or navigational pace.Its construction dates back to the first half of the 19th century, it wasinaugurated in 1858 by Napoleon III. In1923, the construction of theGuerledan dam and the progress of the railroad put an end to theuse of the canal to transport goods. Today, hauling horses havegiven way to cyclists, hikers and boaters. Following the banks of thewaterway means going through the 220 locks along its course,discovering many fine towns dotted along the route and passing insilence through unspoilt natural landscape. From Nantes, you willfollow the valleys of the Erdre, of Isac, of the Oust,the Blavet, the Dore, the Hyeres and the Aulne on the way to the final destination,the harbor of Brest.
