TRANSCRIPT

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. The GPS is a navigational system involving satellites and computers that can determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by computing the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver.

GPS receiver• Contains a computer that "triangulates" its own position by getting bearings from three of the four satellites. The result is provided in the form of a geographic position - longitude and latitude. • If a fourth satellite can be received, the receiver/computer can figure out the altitude as well as the geographic position.

4. Demonstrate entering the latitude and longitude coordinates into the GPS to find a Geocache in your area. (will be shortly….let’s learn a little bit about this fun adventure)

a) Traditional Cache: Normal geocaches. If you go to the posted coordinates, you will find some type of box or container hidden there. Inside the container you will probably find a log book to sign and some trinkets to trade.

b) Micro-cache: This is a traditional cache in a tiny container holding usually nothing more than a small roll of paper and pencil on which to record your visit; and you may need to bring your own pencil

c) Virtual cache: Is a cache that exists in a form of a location. Depending on the cache 'hider,' a virtual cache could be to answer a question about a location, an interesting spot, a task, etc.

d) Multilevel cache: These are like traditional

ones, except there are multiple stages. When you get to the posted coordinates you will find a container. However, there won't be a log book inside. Instead there will be another set of coordinates which lead to another box. Eventually you will get to the final stage.

e) Travel Bug: Is a trackable tag that you attach to an item. This allows you to track your item on Geocaching.com. The item becomes a hitchhiker that is carried from cache to cache (or person to person) in the real world and you can follow its progress online.

Muggle: It is used to refer to someone who does not geocache. Usually this term is used after a non-geocacher looks puzzled at a geocacher making circles with their GPS receiver, or when a non-geocacher accidentally finds a cache.

What should NOT be in a cache?

An activity held sacred by Pathfinders everywhere, Trash Out simply means to take along a plastic trash bag while hunting Geocaches and picking up trash on the way.

Yes…… We will be going to practice all these good things we just learned…. But…. Wait…

We need to learn something very important.

Let’s talk about this topic….

Discuss Matthew 6:19-21 and Jeremiah 29:13 and compare them to geocaching.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:19-21

Discuss Matthew 6:19-21 and Jeremiah 29:13 and compare them to geocaching.

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Safety concerns you should consider when geocaching• Always take water with you
