Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg and Rockingham County provide visitors with unsurpassed culinary options, a thriving arts community, endless outdoor adventures, a vibrant downtown, and a diverse mix of performances, annual events, and festivals.

The Appalachian Trail and Virginia Main Street Community is populated with several cozy bed & breakfasts and luxurious hotels, each ready to welcome you with a unique lodging experience.

Arrive in style by flying into the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport. By providing the quickest, most convenient access to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with well-timed departures and arrivals, the airport makes it easy and affordable to fly local.

Trendy, locally-owned restaurants, museums, and art galleries connect historic downtown Harrisonburg to James Madison University, creating one of Virginia’s first designated Arts & Cultural Districts. This 10-block walk passes by a handful of museums including the Virginia Quilt Museum, Explore More Discovery Museum, Harrisonburg Fire Department Museum, and Valley Turnpike Museum, as well as the Harrisonburg

Farmers Market, Court Square Theater, and parts of two National Historic Districts.

In Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the surrounding areas, there are eight designated National Historic Districts: Harrisonburg Downtown and Harrisonburg Old Town Historic Districts, Port Republic, Bridgewater, Dayton, Massanetta Springs, Singers Glen, and the Skyline Drive Historic Districts. These designated areas are hotspots for self-guided walking tours.

Uptown is filled with national favorites including popular restaurants and shops, so whatever you came for, you’ll leave with that and more! If you’re looking for an eco-friendly vacation, you’ll find it in Harrisonburg. Harrisonburg and Rockingham County are home to over 33 Virginia Green designated businesses and our city, the first in Virginia to offer guests access to electric car charging stations, and Harrisonburg encourages cycling as a healthy and green form of transportation.

Begin your adventure at the Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor Center, where hospitable travel specialists welcome you with information to help you plan your

Harrisonburg area getaway.

Harrisonburg is the Cycling Capital of

the Shenandoah Valley, offering the

material and natural resources needed

for green travelers. Many city streets

have markings known as “sharrows,”

indicating that the lane is used for both cyclists and

motorists to share. Harrisonburg was honored by the

League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze Award

Level Bicycle Friendly Community and recognized as a

Bronze Level Ride Center by the International Mountain

Bicycling Association. In addition, Harrisonburg was

recently named Best Biking Community by Blue Ridge

Outdoors Magazine.

Multiple levels of road and mountain bicycling trails are

supported by a variety of local and regional businesses

offering quality products and services. Check out

Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park, which offers three

different levels of trails to appeal to cyclists of all skill

levels. Our area is also home to numerous bike rental

and repair shops, each ready to serve you on your

bike-friendly vacation. These cycling enthusiasts can

also assist you in mapping out your rides!

While you’re here, join in on a casual community ride

where everyone is welcome. Typically these social

rides happen once per week and are fun for all! Want

something more heart-pumping? Sign up in advance

for one of the area’s numerous competitive annual

events, like the challenging Massanutten Hoo-Ha! or

the intense Alpine Loop Gran Fondo.

Garnering the title of “The Breadbasket

of the Confederacy,” the areas of

Harrisonburg, Rockingham County,

and the Shenandoah Valley played

significant roles during the American

Civil War. Harrisonburg was at the crossroads of two

major highways: the Valley Turnpike (modern-day Rt.

11) and the Rockingham Turnpike (modern-day Rt.

33). The city was also located about 25 miles north of a

huge Confederate rail and supply center in Staunton.

At the time, Rockingham County was one of the most

prosperous agricultural counties in the nation.

Explore iconic Civil War sites including key battlefields,

cemeteries where soldiers were buried, and sites

involved in The Burning with Harrisonburg and

Rockingham County’s Battles on the Home Front

driving tour. Stop at the Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor

Center to pick up your driving tour map and brochure;

these documents will help guide you through nearly 30

trail sites within a 20 mile radius.

Visit The Heritage Museum, located in Dayton, where

you can view an electric map highlighting Stonewall

Jackson’s Valley Campaign of 1862 and visit their

bookstore with a unique selection of Civil War history

and family research. Continue to soak up Civil War

history at CrossRoads (Valley Brethren-Mennonite)

Heritage Center, where you can find exhibits and a

video on the settling of the Shenandoah Valley by the

Brethren and Mennonites, including in Civil War times.

Travel to Grottoes and visit Grand Caverns, a Natural

National Landmark that features over 200 signatures of

Civil War soldiers.

Local fishing enthusiasts know they’re fortunate to

live in an area with abundant water and plentiful

opportunities to cast a line. Whether you’re seeking

to link up with a guide service or just looking to spend

a day on the shoreline, the Metro Area boasts ample

locations and services to meet your needs. Be sure to

explore Lake Shenandoah and Silver Lake in Dayton

– both easily accessible with public parking. Throw in

the canoe at River Boat Landing on Island Ford Road

in McGaheysville it’s just minutes from the cities core at

the base of Massanutten Mountain.

Travel a few minutes east to enjoy the activities at

Massanutten Resort, including an indoor/outdoor water

park, two golf courses, snow sports, zip line, and canopy

tour– a true four season destination!

Our area also offers many public parks that include

playgrounds, surface trails, athletic fields, picnic

shelters, basketball courts, and many other amenities.

Additionally, Rockingham County Fairgrounds is not

Agritourism comes naturally to the Shenandoah Valley, and the Metro Area truly embraces our unique and robust reputation. As the top agricultural-producing County in Virginia, our poultry, beef, pork, dairy, and all manner

of fruit and vegetable offerings are legendary. Our farmers markets and roadside stands are abundant so bring your appetite and get ready to sample the local flavors! While downtown visit the Harrisonburg Farmers Market or traveling north the Broadway Farmers Market where you can meet the farmers who with heart and soul provide a bounty of delicious Valley favorites.

Enjoy a variety of locally-brewed beers at Three Brothers Brewing Co., a popular brewery located inside a renovated Coca-Cola bottling plant that is dedicated to producing quality and unique craft beer utilizing the support of the local community. The brewing brothers frequently host beer tastings, live music, and food trucks at their venue, making it a fun hangout for visitors and residents. Harrisonburg voted Best Beer Town by Blue Ridge Outdoor magazine is 2013, joining Three Brothers in 2014 is “Three Notch’d” and “Pale Fire Brewing Company”

Old Hill Cidery, located at Showalter’s Orchard and Greenhouse, is a Valley favorite offering more than 20 varieties of apples. The orchard processes its famous apple cider and hard cider on the premises, so make sure you stop for a cider tasting while taking in the breathtaking views of the property’s 40 acres of rolling countryside.

Relax by taking in the beauty of our area at one of our quality wineries. CrossKeys Vineyard and Bluestone Vineyard offer impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. With tours, tastings, events, special dinners, and live music, these vineyards will provide you with endless entertainment.

Looking for gifts or souvenirs? Check out Downtown Wine & Gourmet and stock up on craft beer, wines, local coffees, and local gourmet chocolates. With nearly 300 beer varieties and 500 wine varieties, the shop has an endless selection of spirits, many brewed or fermented right here in Virginia. The shop also hosts weekly tastings, allowing you to sample a selection of their diverse beers and wines.

Agritourism

Thanks to its designation as a Downtown Culinary District (the first in the state to achieve such status), Harrisonburg has truly earned a reputation as The Dining Destination of the Shenandoah Valley. Literally bursting with culinary offerings and supportive of the local food movement in all kinds of delicious ways, Harrisonburg and Rockingham County welcome you to dine with us on a rooftop, out on the patio, in a historic building, at the weekly Farmer’s Market or surrounded by local music and art – even as you watch your food prepared by one of our popular local food truck enterprises. The choices will amaze you and dazzle your tastebuds!

With a dynamic blend of live music, late-night dining menus, and specialty beer nights, many of the area’s local dining hotspots tout a vibrant nightlife scene. Music and specialty events combine with some of the best fare around at Clementine Café, Billy Jack’s Wing & Draft Shack, Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint and Corgans’ Publick House. Two locations offer hearty, wholesome goodness at A Bowl of Good Café, and no trip to Harrisonburg is complete without a savory European treat from New Leaf Pastry Kitchen. Looking for a romantic dinner for two complete with an extensive wine selection? Head to The Joshua Wilton House near the JMU campus or The Local Chop and Grill House – you’ll find luxe menu offerings featuring the freshest ingredients prepared with flair to tantalize you and your dining companion.

Uptown, dine at L’Italia or Bravo’s Italian Restaurant, where breads and sauces are made fresh daily. Feeling spicy? Feast at Hank’s Smokehouse and Southern Grillery, or Thunderbird Café, both are found just east of the city. For a light breakfast or lunch sandwich and small-batch hand roasted coffee and tea, stop by Greenberry’s Coffee Company.

From classic burgers with a twist at Union Station (where you’ll love the modern industrial vibe) to authentic Ethiopian dishes at Blue Nile, fresh seafood and thick steaks at Bluestone Inn to the down-home county spread at The Village Inn, the area’s variety of both locally-owned and nationally-recognized restaurants will take you on a culinary trip around the world, providing flavors to satisfy even the most discerning palette.

White Oak Lavender Farm is also a popular spot to not only taste homemade lavender lemonade, but also to pick up unique gifts made right on the farm like lavender spices, soaps, pillows, and

even sock monkeys.

Focused revitalization efforts as part of the Virginia Main Street Program have helped downtown Harrisonburg grow into a vibrant arts and shopping district, garnering the title as one of the best shopping

areas in the Shenandoah Valley by Virginia Living Magazine. Stroll through historic downtown and stop for fair trade artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories, and gift items from across the globe at Ten Thousand Villages grab a few quirky collectibles at Glen’s Fair Price Store, and browse art supplies and local artwork at Oasis Fine Art & Craft and Larkin Arts. Locally-made and Fair Trade items are also available in other locations around Harrisonburg, such as at Artisans Hope, and the Valley Mall is home to all of your favorite nationally-recognized stores.

Travel the small towns minutes from the cities core where you can visit charming stores, offering locally-made goodies and fine handcrafts.

in Virginia is home to

the performance-filled

Court Square Theater, as well as a variety of other

art events, thanks to the efforts of The Arts Council of the Valley. Sitting next to downtown is the grandiose

175,000-square-foot Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, which showcases top performances in dance,

music, art, theater, and more. Throughout the region

small towns host events where local performances of

folk, gospel and bluegrass music date back to the days

of the early settlers in the 1700s.
