June 21st a small group of designers met for an even-

ing CEU hosted in tandem by Columbia Forest Products

and Dal-Tile. The topic was “Decorative Hardwood Ply-

wood and Interior Air Quality”. Richard Poindexter

with Columbia Forest Products educated the group on

understanding composite core adhesive options and

formaldehyde emission issues. Multiple samples of the

differing applications were passed around the group to

touch and feel. Dal-Tile generously provided refresh-

ments and their showroom as

a meeting place. An HSW

credit and tasty meal capped

off the evening.

JULY CEU

The Metropolitan Multi-Service Center was the setting for Houston City Center’s annual Barrier Free CEU Event. Participants were led through this strategically designed environment allowing them to explore numer-ous universal and accessible spaces, including an adap-tive fitness room, full court gym, wheelchair-accessible indoor pool, and the Playground Without Limits. To top it off, participants were able to spectate a Wheelchair Rugby Match! The guided tour was followed by an inter-active discussion and Q&A session with none other than Lex Frieden, Director of the ILRU Program at TIRR Me-morial Hermann and instrumental player in the develop-ment of ADA.

A special thanks to the Southwest ADA Center, who made this entire event possible. The South-west ADA Center has teamed with IIDA HCC for the past 4 years in order to bring the important subject of ac-cessible design to Houston’s design community. Tracy McCarthy, a grad-uate student of Industrial Design at Philadelphia University, was instru-mental in making this year’s event a

THANK YOU TO PAST COUNCIL

If you happen to remember last year at this time at the beginning of my term as Director , I likened my-

self and our upcoming IIDA year to a Tasmanian Devil, whirling around and around at break-neck speed. That

analogy has remained true. It has been a wildly exciting and successful year for our Industry. We have seen tre-

mendous growth in Houston design firms equating to busy, busy designers...but not so busy that they didn't

make time to attend a few project tours, CEUs and maybe an entertainment event or two. All work and no play

= bad news!

This year's IIDA council has worked tirelessly to provide creative, educating and entertaining diversions

throughout the year. In October, volunteer designers created masks to disguise us at Art & Artifacts Masquer-

ade, in February, we volunteered time to encourage design students at our 12th annual Student Conference,

and lest we forget all our volunteer design teams' hard work to give back to our community with Product Run-

way in May. Our organization is nothing without volunteers, so part of my next adventure as Past Director is to

rally those in our A&D community to make our industry stronger and connect them with the opportunities they

are passionate about.

The memories I have collected from this past year will stay with me forever. There is a saying that has

proven very true for me...You get out of life exactly what you put into it, so even though this particular adven-

ture is over, my next adventure is just around the corner, waiting for what I can put into it.
