No legal action taken against JawoynINSUFFICIENT evidence in rela-

tions to complaints of misappropria-tion of money by members of theJawoyn Association will see no legalaction to be taken in the matter.

Former Jawoyn chief executivePreston Lee, his sister, Member forArnhem, Larisa Lee, as well as sev-

eral employees of the Katherine-based association, had come underfire earlier this year, after former staffmembers raised allegations of misuseof Jawoyn money.

But an investigation by an inde-pendent barrister on behalf of the In-digenous corporations watchdog - the

Office of the Registrar of IndigenousCorporations, an official Federal Gov-ernment organisation - has now foundthat there is not enough evidence toprove breaches of the legislation totake legal or civil action against oneof the Territory’s largest Aboriginalassociations.

In February, Larisa Lee categori-cally denied any wrong doing andsaid allegations of covering up cor-ruption and misappropriating thou-sands of dollars that were meant to gotowards emergency funds, were“wrong”.

“The highly-defamatory allega-

tions being made against me arebased on groundless rumours and willbe revealed as lies when the currentofficial investigation into the associa-tion is completed,” Ms Lee said inFebruary.

“All my dealings with the JawoynAssociation have been lawful.”
