This map illustrates satellite-detected firesand smoke plumes at oil wells south ofMosul, and also east of Baiji, Iraq. The Mosulfires began with an initial fire at one or twowells on 8 May 2016, lasting less than oneday, and intermittently burned in June. Thecurrent fire complex began on 3 July withdaily fire detections occurring until about 12July, when the fires greatly increased innumber and continued to burn until gradualreductions in detected fires occurred startingin November 2016. The fires east of Baijihave been active since early January 2016.The frequency of smoke plumes (in days) issymbolized in shades of red and yellow, andwas calculated using daily MODIS satelliteimages collected between 18 July 2016 and13 March 2017. Note that as the plumedissipates then areas of thinner smoke arenot detected in this process. The inset on thetop right corner shows the infrared data froma Landsat image collected on 25 February2017, indicating the Mosul fires in white. Theinset on the top left corner, from 5 March2017, shows the same area in real color.Additionally, precipitation data from NASA'sIMERG algorithm was included to evaluateinstances of rainfall intersecting the smokeplume. This is a preliminary analysis and hasnot yet been validated in the field. Pleasesend ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.
