Mayoral Message Co-ordinator’s Message

About the Gallery

The 2018 program of upcoming exhibitions looks vibrant and exciting, again highlighting what a magnificent place the Northern Rivers Community Gallery is to visit and to display artists’ works.

The Gallery showcases local and visiting artists and also features exhibitions from BACCI members, NAIDOC contributors and the Ballina Art Society, whose combined expertise is growing with each new exhibition.

The Gallery has been successful in receiving funding from the NSW Government through Create NSW ($55,000) to support the establishment of ‘Ignite Studios @NRCG’ and the continuation of two public programs that were trialled last year in the Gallery; ‘BOLDsparks - Lifelong Learning’ program for people in living in Aged Care Facilities in the Shire; and the ‘1000 Words - Arts and Literacy’ Schools program.

These exciting new programs will add significantly to the Council’s commitment to a community cultural experience.

Excitingly, 2018 is the commencement of artistic endeavours in the heritage listed fire station behind the Gallery. It is hoped that this, combined with the Gallery itself, will further enable artists to achieve their optimum.

I urge visitors to attend each month’s opening where you will have opportunities to converse with the artists and enjoy refreshments at the same time.

Again, I congratulate Lee and the volunteers for making the Northern Rivers Community Gallery a must see by any visitor to the region. The delightful food experience garnered from the Gallery Café works hand in hand with the Gallery in promoting a wonderful tourist destination for locals and visitors alike.

Mayor David Wright

Our team of staff and volunteers feel very humbled by the continued patronage our Gallery receives from our community, artists and visitors.

Year after year our audience is growing larger than we could ever anticipate. During 2017 we

welcomed over 23,000 visitors through our doors and look forward to sharing our 2018 program with an even wider audience.

This year’s program presents 40 stunning exhibitions including works by local and visiting artists and the expansion of ‘Ignite Studios @ NRCG’ will extend our arts programs to offer more worshops and community led creative activities than ever before.

Enjoy and I look forward to sharing 2018 with you!

Lee Mathers

Dreaming features works by five Northern Rivers artists, Katie Alleva, Julia Curtis, Jasmine Phillips, Jill Runciman and Rebecca Tapscott. Dreaming explores the ways in which the subconscious manifests itself through dreams. This multi-disciplinary exhibition delves into the depths of the dreaming mind and how our thoughts, desires, memories and fears often jarringly juxtapose against the world of physical reality.

Exhibition Dates: 9 January - 4 February 2018

Launch Event: Thursday 11 January 2018

Whilst the works carry diverse narratives, they reflect a spontaneous response to the immediate environment, at a contemporary moment in time. Using a broad range of materials and media, the exhibition is a presentation of the creative diversity of the artists within the Practising Artists Network (PAN). PAN is locally based and committed to the visual arts in the Northern Rivers; providing a forum for support and networking between artists, social events and group exhibitions.

For Shelly Anfield, the silent language of painting offers the opportunity to express a poetic inner landscape of deep questioning and contemplation that she doesn’t easily find words for. Using a limited palette and layers of finely blended oil paint to achieve an atmospheric glow, the vast and seemingly infinite skies act as a metaphor for the complexities of human life.Exhibition Dates: 7 February - 4 March 2018 Launch Event: Thursday 8 February 2018

Ignite Studios @ NRCG is an extension of the Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG), a community-engaged cultural hub in the Northern Rivers region, owned and operated by Ballina Shire Council.

Located in the heart of the Ballina CBD, adjacent to the NRCG and housed in the historic former Ballina Fire Station, Ignite Studios provides a dynamic shared access space supporting the development and participation of artistic pursuits.

Ignite Studios offers two venues to support four activities for the growing demand of local arts and cultural activities. This includes Artist Studios; an Artist-in-Residence Space; Workshop Spaces and an experimental project space utilising the original ‘Engine Room’. The ‘Engine Room’ doubles as both an art education and an experimental art project space.

An exciting program of workshops will take place throughout the year for all levels of creative development. As dedicated creative workshop spaces, the ‘Engine Room’ and ‘Locker Room’, provide a beautiful setting to learn, make and create. Make sure to check the ‘What’s On’ Section of our website for details of all upcoming workshops.

The Artist Studios and Visiting Artist program will provide visitors an opportunity to witness professional artists creating and making in their studios or learn from them through our extended resident artist public program of events.

Visit the ‘Ignite Studios’ section of the NRCG website and sign-up to our E-News for information on the latest news and events at Ignite Studios @ NRCG www.nrcgballina.com.au
