Chigirie comes from the Japanese word chigiru(tear) and e(picture/art). In other words, Washi chigirie involves tearing paper and using glue to paste colorful torn paper to a cardboard. The traditional art of making washi has been around since ancient times and involves craftsmen working and enduring extremely cold winters to carefully create sheets of washi. With the care that is given to making the washi, the sheets are delicate but strong.
