Denton musician andsongwriter TonyFerraro is back at Dan’s
Silverleaf today — after a weebreak from a stellar, goose-bump-inducing 35 Dentonfestival set with George Neal’sproject, Hares on theMountain.
Ferraro is a familiar face forDenton music fans. Hepresided over the now-defunctEaton Lake Tonics andappears regularly with RyanThomas Becker’s Last JokeBand.
Today, he brings anotherproject, the Satans of SoftRock, to the stage at Dan’s.This time, the sunny-soundingside of rock is on the menu.

Buddy Holly. Ferraro isn’t name-checked
as often as other prominentsongwriters in town, but heconsistently crafts fully real-ized songs that imprint easilyon the brain and are easy onthe ears.
Sounds like: Weezer on aBeatles bender. Ambiguouslyrics that seem wistful, butare set to incurably happymusic.

It’s been said that theprospect of Salmon Fishingin the Yemen is as unlikely
as a man landing on Mars. Andas impossible as both eventsmight seem, this new romanticcomedy, to its credit, at leastmakes the fishing part soundplausible.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemenrisks believability by basing itsmain premise on shakygrounds. Because, after estab-lishing the possibility of bring-ing salmon fishing to an aridcountry like Yemen, the filmbecomes beguiling. After itsaffability kicks in, its enjoyablecast then adopts a flippant atti-tude while exchanging cleverdialogue and indulging in intel-ligent byplay.
Lasse Hallstrom (The CiderHouse Rules) directs and shows
a firm hand on knowing whento surf between satire and cyn-icism. By bringing a politicalelement into it, and with itsBritish roots, Salmon Fishingvaguely resembles 2009’sinspired In the Loop, but with-out that mordant film’sunhinged characters ormachine-gun dialogue.
As is, however, SalmonFishing succeeds on its own, telling the story, based on
Simon Beaufoy’s adaptation ofthe Paul Torday novel, abouthow an obscure British govern-ment official, Alfred Jones(Ewan McGregor), becomessnared in a seemingly hopelessscheme, all to make the party inpower look good.
Jones is approached one dayby Harriet (Emily Blunt), apublic relations agent repre-senting Sheikh Muhammed(Amr Waked), a fly-fishing afi-cionado, like Jones. The sheikhwants to coordinate his plan tobuild a dam in his nativeYemen with a new scheme tostock the river with salmon.Everyone agrees it is crazy andwould take untold amounts ofmoney.
But, because it would helpAnglo-Arab relations, the gearskick in mainly because of thedetermination of governmentalpress liaison Patricia Maxwell
(Kristin Scott Thomas).Maxwell, beautifully playedover-the-top by Scott Thomas, represents the film’s strongestlink to In the Loop, as she isplayed as a conniving, foul-mouthed, but consistentlyhilarious figure.
Beaufoy’s script does notshortchange reluctant roman-tics Harriet and Alfred, andthey trade so many barbs theirfuture coupling seems in doubt, particularly since he is marriedand she has a boyfriend.
But well-written romanticcomedies find their way aroundsuch obstacles, and Hallstromguides his players through theirvarious subplots until it all endsjust about where you knew itwould.

OPENING FRIDAYThe Hunger Games ()
Entertaining and suspenseful yet
sometimes overwrought rendition of
Suzanne Collins’ popular futuristic
novel about a young woman, Katniss
(Jennifer Lawrence), and a young
man, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), cho-
sen to represent their district in the
annual Hunger Games, a survival
competition to the death among 24
young people. While focusing on
Katniss, director Gary Ross keeps the
blood and gore to a minimum in the
hunt sequences yet prolongs the ini-
tial phase in the Emerald City-like
capital. Should please fans of the
novel. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. —

NOW PLAYINGCasa de Mi Padre (1/2) This is a
total goof, of course. That’s obvious
even before Will Ferrell, dressed in a
cowboy hat and a neckerchief sitting
astride a horse in the Mexican
desert, opens his mouth and utters
his first overly enunciated Spanish
words. But the premise, which would
have been just fine as a sketch, feels
as if it’s been stretched awfully thin
to fill an entire feature. Ferrell, speak-
ing solid Spanish (albeit with an
Americanized accent), stars as
Armando Alvarez, a dimwitted
ranchero whose successful business-
man brother, Raul (Diego Luna), is
the star of the family as far as their
father (the late Pedro Armendariz Jr.)
is concerned. Intentional continuity
errors, missing frames and cheap
production values abound. Rated R,
84 minutes. In Spanish with English
subtitles. — The Associated Press

His jets have hardly cooled from the release of the 2011 album This is Indian Land, but Cody Canada and hisband, the Departed, are days away from holing up in an Austin studio for a full-length album targeted for a fallrelease.
In the nine months since Indian Land was released, Canada said he still has strong ties to the album.“I finally got to do what I always wanted to do on that album,” Canada said during a short break from a band rehears-
al. “I had been wanting to pay tribute to these Oklahoma songwriters for a long, long time. You know, that title, This isIndian Land, had been floating around in my mind for a long time. After we put the last album together, it just seemedto make sense to use that same title.”

Canada, who rose to fame asthe lead vocalist of CrossCanadian Ragweed, is aCanadian by birth. Canadaregularly produces countryand Americana artists (K.D.Lang and Shania Twainamong the best known), areality that might not seemright to citizens of theAmerican Southwest.
But Canada has some of thesame characteristics as theAmerican West and South. It’shome to sprawling land andendless skies. It creates citi-zens that prize self sufficiencyand hospitality. Both Canadaand the American Southwesthave weather with a capital“W.”
Canada was coming to theend of his teens when he lefthis homeland and arrived inStillwater, Okla. He venturedthat far from home because heloved the work of Oklahomamusicians. He stayed becauseRed Dirt music was a commu-nity that nourished emergingsongwriters — and still does.
“When I got to Stillwater,Okla., I knew I’d come to theright place,” he said. “I knewthere were people around Icould learn a lot from, and Idid. They taught me a lot.”
This is Indian Land is ascrapbook of memories andmusings by songwritersCanada reveres — LeonRussell, Mike Shannon, J.J.Cale, Gary Scruggs and KevinWelch. Through Canada’sinterpretations, the recordreads as an album aboutStillwater — and Red Dirtcountry in general. Snippets ofvoicemails made the record, including “Call from Crouch”and “Call from Coop,” eachvoice a little dusty-soundingand drawn out with an Okietwang. Nineteen tracks fea-ture Red Dirt rock, a mix offolk-rock guitar and saloon-style keyboards. The drumsare often pop-rock, but thestylings are all from Canada’sheart and memory.
The band will go into thestudio to turn out anotheralbum, and from what Canadasays, fans can expect plenty ofmusic.
“The big picture for thisnext record is that it’s 100 per-
cent us,” he said. “There isn’t arecord where I haven’t writtenover 50 percent of the songs. For better or worse, IndianCountry was a cover record.I’m ready for a record that isall ours.”
Canada lives in NewBraunfels. The band has madetwo records in Denton, andwhen Canada and theDeparted roll into Dentontoday for a show at Rockin’Rodeo, it will be the band’ssecond engagement at thevenue. The upcoming releasewill be recorded at Yellow DogStudios in Austin, with DavePercefull producing.
Canada’s own songs growout of his experiences, themusician said. The musictakes form around his experi-ences and his feelings.
“Well you know its hard to
wrap my head around that, when I try to explain how I getmy songs,” he said. “It’s usuallywhat I’ve gone through. I’mthe kind of guy that angermotivates my songwriting. Not a hateful anger. But I get alot of things off my chestthrough my music. A lot of mysongs are about being in loveand struggling with love. For awhile, my songs were in partabout being on the roadbecause I wanted to be outthere on the road. Now I wantto be with my family. I write alot of songs about my kids. Iwrite a lot of songs about mywife because I love her. I writea lot of songs about my wifebecause I’m mad at her.”
While his heart is inStillwater, Canada found thatNorth Texas was the place theRed Dirt scene and Texasmusic were going.
“Texas was the hotbed formusic,” he said. “Everyone wasjamming and doing festivals. That’s when things reallystarted happening for a lot ofus. I feel like our bands, CrossCanadian Ragweed, Stoney[LaRue] and the Great
Divide, really had a big part ingetting things going. Itseemed that everyone startedgetting up, getting togetheragain and making music andtouring.”
Canada said he’s excitedabout two emerging acts —country artist Jason Eady andTurnpike Troubadours. Bothacts are infusing Red Dirt andcountry with a new shot ofsongwriting skill and talent. He expects them to have wideracclaim before long.
When it comes to collabora-tion and making music thatwill keep fans coming back toan artist for new music andshows, Canada said he feelslike there are a few rules.
“Be honest about it,” Canadasaid. “Respect everybody else.Respect your elders. If youreally say you’re a Robert EarlKeen fan, don’t copy him. Be afan, but make your own music. That’s the main thing, respectand honesty. “
