so big?• In the 1970’s millions of people began moving from rural areas (farms, rainforest) to cities =Urbanization

In Brazil, urbanization led to... Favelas- Slums on located on the

hillsides outside city centers. People move to cities with nothing ($,

jobs). -Build a home wherever they can.

In Rio, 19% of population lives in favelasLargest= Rocinha- 250,000 people

Favelas aren’t official parts of the city• -lack basic city services (electricity, sewers, education, hospitals)

Living in a favela provides you less opportunity to succeed ($$) than in more established neighborhoods.

Without opportunity, it’s hard to leave the favela. Without leaving the favela, it’s hard to have opportunity. You‘re trapped!

Favelas stay poor. Nice neighborhood stay nice. • Brazil has the one of the largest gaps

between rich people & poor people in the world.

Many favelas= overrun with gangs & drugs. -Like Mexico, the government’s fighting back.

Why would Brazil fight to want control its favelas?
