FALL CITY, Wa: One thing about the Korean carmakers – they never stand still.

In 2009, Kia introduced the Soul as a 2010 model.

It was a radical departure from the humdrum models like the Spectra and Magentis that had gone before.

But more than that, it was the harbinger of the Peter Schreyer design language that, with the Forte compact car, signalled not just a new design direction, but a corporate culture shift.

And that direction is beating the competition at their own game and that includes the Europeans, the Americans and, yes, even the Japanese.

They are doing it by offering leading-edge engineering, be it powerplants, transmissions, fuel savings, electronics and all at attractive price points.

No matter how well a vehicle is selling, the Koreans keep on improving anything and everything.

The 2012 Soul is a perfect example. It’s only two years old and probably

the best (and some might say the only) slab-sided car on the market.

It starts with two brand new engines. While they are the same

displacement, that’s about the only similarity. The 1.6-litre inline four-cylinder with gasoline direct injection now produces 138 hp (up 16 hp) and 123 lb/ft of torque while the new 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder produces 164 hp (up 22 hp) and 148 lb/ft of torque.

The 1.6-litre features Kia’s Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology as an

option. It temporarily turns off the engine when the vehicle is not in motion in situations such as standing at a curb or at a stop light. The engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake pedal, resulting in lower levels of fuel consumption and emissions.

You’d think stop/start would be rather simple, but it is very complex. For instance a special reinforced starter motor is needed. The normal life of a starter is about 50,000-60,000 crank-overs. In the ISG Soul it has to be good for at least 350,000 starts because the car has to be restarted so many more times.

I tried the ISG on my way to the press launch site in northern Washington

State. The system worked as expected and should result in a 10 per cent saving in fuel consumption in real life.

Kia officials said the inclusion of ISG is actually the first step towards the eventual electrification of the brand. Stop/start is an essential part of hybrid and full electric cars.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.4/5.6L/100 km city/highway for the 1.6-litre manual, 7.5/5.6L/100 km for the automatic and 7.0/5.4L/100 for the ISG. The 2.0-litre is rated at 7.9/5.8L/100 km city/highway for the manual and 7.9/5.5L/100 km for the automatic.

There’s a lot standard even on the base model, including electric power steering (EPS), tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows, door locks and mirrors, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

A long list of standard driver and safety aids includes: front seat active

headrests, dual front advanced airbags, and front seat-mounted and full-length side curtain airbags. An Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) also are standard, as are front and rear crumple zones, side-impact door beams and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).

The suspension is unchanged with MacPherson struts, coil springs, rear mono-tube gas shock absorbers and stabilizer bar at the front.

At the rear is a transverse torsion beam axle with trailing arms, coil springs and mono-tube shock absorbers for a smooth ride and minimum intrusion into the cargo space.

A sport-tuned suspension is standard on 4U trims.

For my money, I’d go for the 2.0-litre although the 1.6-litre has the benefit of gasoline direction injection and is very frugal.

However, I found the 2.0-litre more gutsy and with the six-speed manual (as tested), there was as much power as I would normally want. It was also better at merging onto super highway traffic which is a big thing with me.

But around town, the 1.6-litre with ISG is probably the way to go if your driving is primarily urban. Gasoline

prices aren’t about to go down, so if you are leery of the extra cost of a hybrid or electric car, the Soul becomes an interesting alternative.

In terms of the overall styling, Kia has kept exterior changes to a minimum with a larger grille and headlights with two rows of LED along the bottom – amber for turn signalling and clear for daytime running.

At the rear there’s a switch to LEDs for the taillights while the interior gets a dashboard facelift.

One thing that should be noted is the available UVO powered by Microsoft voice-activated infotainment system with a 4.3-inch colour touch screen and rear camera display matched to an all-new eight-speaker Infinity audio system that enhances the sound with a centre speaker, subwoofer, external amplifier and speaker lights in a rainbow of colours that pulse to the beat of the music or add mood lighting.

There are still a number of interior trim colours and textures including a tartan plaid on the Retro model. This worked well for MINI so Kia, never one to miss a trend, is on it.

Seating is still more than adequate for five adults and cargo, thanks to the box-like architecture is 546 litres behind the rear seat, 1,511 litres for the seat folded.

So if want to add a little Soul to your life, remember it’s still hip to be square.

Vivian bought his 1939 Buick in 1951 for $97, plus tax.

The cost of a 1939 Buick Series 60 Century Sport Phaeton in 1951: less than $100; a new set of whitewall tires: approximately $800; driving a fully restored classic car several weeks ago for the first time in almost half a century: priceless.

Long-time Saanich resident Leslie Vivian has lived at his house just off Braefoot Road since 1950, and he has owned his domestic gem for almost as long.

“I bought it in 1951 in Vancouver,” Vivian recalls. “A friend of mine lived in Vancouver and he spotted it — somebody told him it was in storage over there so I barrelled over there and bought it. It was $97 dollars plus tax, it came to $127.”

The Sequoia Cream Phaeton — resembling a pale yellow custard — has just had the finishing touches put on it and looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Featuring a 320cc eight-cylinder engine pushing 141

horsepower, the car had been sitting in Vivian’s garage since 2000 when he first took it out to start the restoration process. Before that, it had sat since 1953.

It was left neglected because the lively 86-year-old “kept buying cars.” His current stable includes a pristine 1966 Pontiac Grand Parisienne, a 1991 Cadillac Sedan de Ville and a 1998 GMC Sonoma pickup. A domestic purist, he’s also owned everything from a 1922 Studebaker Touring to several other assorted Pontiacs and Cadillacs.

Aside from a few wear-and-tear items, the Phaeton is largely untouched.

“Most of it is pretty well original. Well, I’ve done all the brakes, cylinders, an alignment, and the linkage on the front and a new radiator.”

The original tube tires were also replaced with modern tubeless editions, a piston added, the plush red leather interior fixed up and the cloth top was changed because of an incident while the car was patiently waiting in the garage.

“Racoons got in there and tore all the upholstery out and all that and made a mess of it. The roof was all collapsed.”

Most of the work was done by Vivian himself, a mechanic by trade. He has worked at various shops in downtown Victoria, and ended his career in 1985 as a maintenance superintendent with the District of Saanich.

Since then, he has kept busy with fishing and spending time at his up-Island home he built shortly after finishing his Saanich house. He plans on taking his newly finished Buick Century up there during the May Tour hosted by the Vintage Car Club of Canada, of which Vivian is a member. Before then, he hopes to take part in the New Year’s Day Run.

In the meantime, Vivian is just going to enjoy the car, having only taken it around the block one time after recently finishing the long-term project.

“It drives very good; it’s got lots of power.”

What prompted Ben Bodnar to purchase his 1964 Volkswagen Beetle? “Nostalgia,” says the nursery manager at Lynne’s Little Elf Garden Centre in Langford. “I owned one when I was a teen, and was looking at getting some sort of classic car when I came across this one.”

His favourite memory is definitely the day he bought the car, and took his young boys for their first ride, he recalls. “It’s loud, and they felt like we were speeding. I loved their huge eyes and smiles as we zipped around the neighbourhood.”

The baby blue Beetle reflects Bodnar’s appreciation for “older things, especially those with a great history.”

Favourite feature? “I love its simplicity in form and function. It’s also pretty economical to operate,” he says.

Plus, “it’s fun watching people of all ages punch the people they are with and yell out ‘punchbuggy’ as I drive by. It’s not the same with the new Beetle.”

Work on the next-generation Chevrolet EN-V concept vehicle, representing General Motors’ vision to meet the growing demand for safe, connected, zero-emissions personal transportation, is under way.

The next-generation Chevrolet EN-V could participate in pilot demonstration programs in megacities around the world to determine real-world practicality.

The award-winning EN-V, short for Electric Networked-Vehicle, is a two-seat, electric urban mobility concept that maintains the basic principle of personal mobility – freedom.

One of the stars of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, EN-V was designed to address environmental issues and help alleviate traffic congestion, parking, safety and energy consumption.

The next-generation Chevrolet EN-V concept will add new features that customers need, such as climate control, personal storage space and all-weather operation, while preserving key elements of the original EN-V, such as the small footprint and maneuverability.

It will also retain its battery electric propulsion, connectivity and autonomous driving capabilities.

In April, GM and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co. Ltd. (SSTEC) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on integrating the next-generation EN-V into the Tianjin Eco-City from a power, communications and physical infrastructure perspective.

The EN-V is a zero-emissions vehicle powered by lithium-ion batteries. Recharging from a conventional wall outlet using standard household power enables EN-V to travel at least 40 km (25

miles) on a single charge, acceptable for most urban trips.

By combining GPS with vehicle-to-vehicle communications and distance-sensing technologies, the EN-V can be driven manually or autonomously.

In autonomous mode, EN-V offers mobility to people who may not otherwise operate a vehicle.

By leveraging wireless communications it allows drivers and occupants to communicate hands-free with friends or business associates while on the go.

The ability to communicate with other vehicles and with the infrastructure could help EN-V significantly reduce the number of vehicle crashes and make it easier to find available parking spaces.

It could also reduce traffic congestion by automatically selecting the fastest route based on real-time traffic information.

Work on Next-Generation EN-V Concept Begins

Visitors to last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show got the biggest clue yet as to the look of the production five-door up!, in the shape of the cross up!

The cross up! previews the five-door up! but with the styling cues of an SUV, including suspension raised by 15 mm.

The most obvious differences when

compared with the standard up! are the additional doors and the styling of the C-pillars. While on the three-door car the shoulder line and windows ascend towards the rear near the C-pillars, on the five-door the two elements form a straight line, creating a more upright appearance.

Underneath, there is robust silver-coloured underbody protection at both

ends. Like the front bumper, the rear

bumper also gets a silver cross-bar. That colour is echoed in the matt

silver roof rails and the light silver door mirror caps, all offset by the eye-catching Tornado Red paint of the body, which can also be found surrounding the Volkswagen logo in the centre of the 16-inch alloy wheels.

Nissan has released its latest safety technologies to help reduce fatal and serious injuries caused by accidents involving vehicles, based on the company’s “Safety Shield” concept.

By improving signal processing technology of vehicle-equipped cameras which helps enable the detection of people, other vehicles, road and obstacles around the vehicle, the Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication and Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera help drivers to take avoidance behaviour before an accident might occur.

In addition, the Predictive Forward Collision Warning System, which uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the deceleration of the second vehicle in front, alerts the driver in advance of a sudden drop in speed of the vehicle two cars ahead.

1. Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication: In car parks or other confined areas, in order to help mitigate collisions with obstacles such as walls due to the driver’s misapplication of the accelerator instead of the brake or pressing on the accelerator too hard, Nissan has developed a function to recognize whether the vehicle is on a road or in a car park by using image signal data acquired by the Around View Monitor’s four unit cameras. When the driver presses the accelerator pedal to the floor, this function allows the vehicle to accelerate if it is on a road, and does not in a parking space.

2. Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera: Using the Around View Monitor image processing technology, Nissan developed Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera, which detects people, other vehicles and road conditions in the rear and sides of

the vehicle, to alert drivers of possible collision risks. This system has the following three functions and will be installed in new models from 2012, followed by global distribution.

3. Blind Spot Warning: If the driver operates the turn signal while not being aware of other vehicles travelling in the driver’s blind spot, a buzzer is sounded simultaneously with an indication lamp flashing on the front pillar to warn the driver of the vehicle.

4. Lane Departure Warning: The rear camera works to detect the white lines on the road. If the driver does not use the turn signal and starts to drift from their current lane unintentionally, a buzzer is sounded and a signal on the display warns the driver that the car is drifting into another lane.

5. Moving Object Detection: When the vehicle is placed in reverse, the rear camera’s image processing function works to detect moving objects or people, such as pedestrians, around the vehicle. On detection of a moving object, the driver is warned with a buzzer and display signals. Nissan plans to apply this function to Around View Monitor where minor changes are planned for this November.

6. Predictive Forward Collision Warning System: To help prevent pile-up accidents resulting from the deceleration of vehicles in front and out of view, a sensor installed in the front of the vehicle analyzes the relative velocity and the vehicular gap existing between the two vehicles in front. When the system determines the need to decelerate, it warns the driver in advance with a buzzer, signal on display, and also by tightening the seat belt.

Be Car Care Aware Canada is urging Canadians to look down the road, both literally and symbolically to address safety needs before they occur.

This October, much of the focus will be on children.

Even a slow speed crash can cause severe injury or even death to children if they are not properly restrained.

To ensure a child’s safety, Be Car Care Aware urges you to follow these simple steps regarding child safety seats:

• Properly install your child seats.• Ensure harness straps fit snugly

around the child’s body.• A rear-facing infant seat should

never be installed in a seating

position equipped with an air bag.

• Canadian law says that the forward-facing child restraint must be secured to the vehicle frame using the tether strap at the top of the seat.

Booster seats are required for children under the age of eight or who weigh between 18 kg - 36 kg (40-80 lbs) or who stand less than 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.

A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following criteria is met: the child turns eight years old; the child weighs 36 kg (80 pounds); or the child is 145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.

Children 12 and under should be properly restrained in the back seat, especially if there is a passenger-side air bag.

Finally, always set a good example and make sure everyone in the car wears his or her own seat belt.

Chevrolet hopes to excite first-time buyers and city residents when the Spark mini car joins the brand’s small car family next year in Canada and the United States.

The Spark is a sporty five-door, four-passenger hatch on sale in Chevrolet markets around the world.

More details about the Spark, the smallest Chevrolet in the Canadian and U.S. lineups, will be unveiled next month at the Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The Chevrolet Spark is 14 inches (355 mm) shorter than the recently launched Chevrolet Sonic.

It is three feet longer (0.91 metre) than the smart fortwo and four inches (101 mm) longer than the Fiat 500.

In Canada and the United States, the Spark will be powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 83 horsepower (61 kW).

The standard transmission will be a five-speed manual. An automatic transmission will be available.

The Spark will offer more interior room than other mini cars, and it will be the only car in the segment to provide standard benefits such as a five-year, 160,000 km powertrain warranty and the safety and security of OnStar.

Available packages include uplevel features such as colour touch screen radio; Chevrolet MyLink infotainment connectivity with Stitcher internet radio; Bluetooth; exterior enhancements such as chrome accents; heated leatherette seats; and alloy wheels.

The Spark is the newest sub-compact car from Chevrolet that will debut at the coming Los Angeles Auto Show.
