Fraser Valley civil engineer Brian Beard got an early New Year’s present the day before the celebrations: His 1922 Ahrens-Fox pumping fire engine and hose car arrived at the border. This rare, freshly restored 90-year-old motorized firefighting apparatus completes what is possibly Canada’s best privately owned vintage fire truck collection.
The last century has seen four major fire truck manufacturers: American LaFrance, Seagrave, Mack and Ahrens-Fox, which went bankrupt in 1956. Beard’s collection represents all traditional manufacturers from the early brass era through into 1960s and all of his rigs are completely stock.
His newest acquisition is his most historic truck, rescued from a half-century of neglect. In December 1922, Ahrens-Fox Model J-S-2 piston pumper #1211, built in Cincinnati, was delivered to Station 9 in downtown St. Paul, Minn. It was the city’s only all-African American-manned firehouse. The Cincinnati-built rig cost a staggering $12,500. The state-of-the-art engine could pump 750 gallons of water per minute and the engine is equipped with dual ignition – battery and magneto – for guaranteed performance.
St. Paul had been slow to transition from horse-drawn to motorized fire apparatus. In 1922, the department ordered four Ahrens-Fox J-S-2 combination pumper and hose cars with the urgent call for speedy delivery “as our horses are dying at an alarming rate.”
Following four decades of service, Engine 9 was retired and sold in 1964 to a Kinney Shoe store in St. Anthony, Minn., where it spent years with children jumping in and out of it. After 20 years, the old fire engine was sold to a museum and then a collector. Beard purchased the Ahrens-Fox in 2006 along with a similar truck from Detroit and commissioned expert restorer Andy Swift to revive the old fire engine at his shop in Hope, Maine.

Ford will throw open the doors to its all-new production-ready B-MAX compact multi-activity vehicle when it takes a starring role at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March.

500L – the L stands for “Large” – is the new addition to the 500 range, which, following the Abarth and Cabrio versions, furthers the brand’s strategy, with the aim of extending its offer by introducing models in a position to satisfy different types of customers.
With the “L,” the 500 expands and grows together with customers to accommodate new experiences and needs once more.
With MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a B segment car, the new Fiat model defies the conventional distinctions between the various segments, combining the typical characteristics of different categories in order to create a distinctive alternative to the traditional B and C segments.
With the 500L, the Fiat brand demonstrates its creative spirit once more: a marriage of functionality and emotion, it features a five-seater single-volume structure which is 414 cm long, 178 cm wide and 166 cm high. It is a further development of the concept of ‘cab forward’ introduced by Fiat with the 600 Multipla, a precursor to the concept of the compact people carrier.
Produced at the Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, 500L is a “first car” for those who won’t settle for anything less than Italian style, the versatility that comes from a functional design and engine technology that sets the bar in terms of efficiency.
The Fiat 500L will be introduced to Europe in the last quarter of 2012, with an engine range which will initially comprise two petrol engines (TwinAir and 1.4-litre) and a turbodiesel engine (1.3 MultiJet II) and the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology from Fiat Group Automobiles.

varnished deep red paint with gold leaf designs and lettering just the way it was delivered new. The owner doesn’t want to talk about the cost of the restoration. But Beard enthuses about other fire engines in the two large “fire halls” he constructed on his rural acreage.
There’s a 1924 American LaFrance Type 38 combination pumper, a chemical engine and hose car that originally served Port Henry, NY. It was restored for a museum after the fire chief who originally took delivery of the pumper bought it in 1960. When he retired, the old fire engine was passed on to his son who sold it in 2000 for restoration.
This amazing rig is designed to not only pump water, but also has a 40-gallon chemical tank creating pressure by mixing vials of soda and acid, effectively making it a large fire extinguisher.
An extremely rare truck is the 1948 Bickle-Seagrave 66EA 75-foot aerial ladder powered by a 195 HP dual ignition V-12 Seagrave Engine built on the Pierce-Arrow design by Seagrave. The engine served Toronto for 20 years before being sold to St. Hubert, QC. Seagrave designed and built the first all-steel hydraulic aerial ladder in 1935. Brian bought the 15,000-mile (24,000 km) fire engine that is completely original except for repainting in 1984.
His beautiful 1947 American LaFrance 700 Series triple combination was a big city fire engine serving the small Minnesota
community of Kenyon. American Lafrance designed the first custom cab-over-engine fire truck in 1945 with the first deliveries in 1947. He found it through the Antique Fire Engine Society and bought it from an owner in the community it had been delivered to.
The truck has travelled just 4,900 miles (7,900 km) since new. It’s powered by a 215 horsepower Auburn-designed V12 engine with dual battery ignition for extra reliability. It carries 300 gallons of water and can pump 1,000 gallons per minute.
Brian Beard has managed major projects and now works as a consultant after a career building refineries, mines and pulp and paper mills all over the world. He got the fire engine bug as a child during visits to his grandmother in Edmonton. Her neighbour would eventually be fire chief and took young Beard to visit Edmonton’s fire stations.
After that, his mother would take him to fire halls whenever possible. “I saw firemen as heroes – proud of their profession and ready to go into burning buildings,” he says. “I was hooked and laddered forever.” As a matter of interest Beard, wrote the Pictorial History of the Edmonton Fire Department along with Jack Scott who was the Chief of Apparatus.
Beard served in the Fort St. John volunteer fire department with its 700 series American LaFrance. It was the first fire tuck he ever drove. His own fire halls feature an amazing Gamewell electo-mechanical call box fire alarm system with its central headquarters panels in a corner of his museum. The system, invented in 1865, was used in most major cities,
fire engines including Edmonton and Vancouver, to turn in fire alarms long before telephones were invented. His “watch desk” came from Vancouver’s fire hall No. 22.
The most modern truck in Beard’s collection is a 1963 Mack C85 Triple Combination. Many consider this Mack cab-over-engine design for a fire truck to be the most attractive ever built. Mack inherited the design by purchasing the Beck Bus Company, which had acquired Ahrens-Fox in bankruptcy.
The big rig is powered by a behind-the-cab 707 cubic inch Mack Thermodyne dual ignition six cylinder gas engine delivering 280 horsepower. The fire engine is loaded with 800 gallons of water. “My neighbours know it’s here and it’s ready to work if there is a fire,” Beard says with confidence.

Street Stock drivers in B.C. will have something new to look forward to in 2012 with the formation of the new B.C. Street Stock Drivers Challenge.
The inaugural season will see a four-race series between Penticton Speedway and Western Speedway. The series should bring the top teams from all over the province to do battle before crowning the best Street Stock driver in B.C.
The series will start at Penticton Speedway Aug. 4 and 5 for the running of the Gordie Mannes Memorial weekend and conclude at Victoria’s Western Speedway on Aug. 24 and 25 in conjunction with the Reg Midgley Memorial Canada 200. Both tracks will use identical formats.
Qualifying, trophy dashes, heat races and a 75-lap main event will be run on the first night; the second night will see points from the previous night determine the lineup for trophy dashes, heat race and 75-lap main event.
The overall winner of each weekend will
be determined by the driver accumulating the highest number of points for the two days, with $1,000 to the winner.
Cars from each track use their own track rules, with the exception of three common rules:
• Weight – The total weight will be 3,200 lbs, with 55 per cent maximum left side weight and 48 per cent maximum rear weight, at the end of the race.
• Crate Motor Gear Rule – Drivers must match Penticton or Western Speedway track rules as they apply to crate motors. For cars running the Penticton restrictor plate there is no gear rule. Those choosing the bigger plate of Western Speedway must use the Western Speedway gear rule. There will be a 5500 chip rule for all Crate engine cars.
• Tires – Hoosier 970 or American Racer P265. Tire testing will be performed and a weight penalty will be enforced if either tire is faster than the other.

The spring of 2012 will see the smart fortwo making its mark in a striking new look, featuring an upgraded exterior and a fresh leather/fabric mix in the interior.
The substantially revamped smart fortwo sports a markedly more dynamic appearance, featuring a larger radiator grille with integrated logo, striking front aprons in a new design, horizontally arranged LED daytime driving lights, muscular side skirts and modified rear aprons.
The chrome-coloured logo is now positioned directly in the black radiator grille.
While the main focus of this facelift is on the exterior, there are changes inside the car, too.
These include a new, high-quality interior package in crystal grey, comprising a fresh leather/fabric combination for the seats, an imitation leather/fabric mix for the door trims and black imitation leather for the instrument panel in combination with a grey kneepad.
The five lines – pure, pulse, passion, BRABUS and BRABUS Xclusive – are to be retained.
Similarly, the smart fortwo will continue to be available as a coupe and cabrio version and with six engine and motor variants.
