OEI Services Portfolio – Read Me First

• NAVIGATION:

– View in “Slideshow mode” – click on service names to see more detail where available(service names are linked to other pages if more detail exists for the service)

– The following symbols are used throughout:

• INTENT: Focus on key services in the OEI service portfolio

– Identify and begin developing profiles for the key services in the OEI portfolio

– Gather ideas about changes that should be made to the portfolio

– Use these profiles to begin developing service roadmaps for the key services

• APPROACH:

– Identify services from the customers’ point of view, not the providers’

– There are a million different ways to slice up the services in the portfolio, it’ll never be “perfect”

– Use simple yet robust language and graphics to describe the portfolio (e.g, UML)

– Focus on improvements that will yield the “most bang for the buck”.

What We Have

• Current Service Issues from UDDI reviews / integration experiences etc.

– Services Auto Generated by Tools

• Easier for developers only

– No security

– Non standard (questionable) WSDL files

– No reliable way to call / consume services

– Vendors building toward Chaos

– Disregarding lessons from the Network

What We Need

• Technical Governance • A Blueprint for Service Architecture • Functional Specifications that define

services across Offices within communities (GEO, Finance, etc)

– Contracts between all parties to do business within a unified standard model

– Service bus etc are defined over this baseline

• Need Common Specifications for– Security– Discovery– Web service management

• Clients that are reusable / no redevelopment that leverage standard security and discovery models

• Uniform ways for people to tap into services

• Standard Integration platform – Windows communications foundation

• Most promising for complex business
