Buckets for Badge System Design

New build: The badge system, learning content, and technological platforms are designed simultaneously.

Integrated build: The badge system and learning content are co-created and integrated into a pre-existing technological platform.

Layered build: The badge system is layered on top of pre-existing learning content and pre-existing technological platform.

Responsive build: The badge system responds to pre-existing learning content, and the technological platform does not yet exist, is optional, or is distributed.

Badge-first build: The badges are designed first and the learning content and technological platform are designed around the badges.

Quoted from Sheryl Grant ‘s 5 Buckets for Badge System Design: "You Are Here.”

Course Description

• 1 credit course. Wanted to find a way to extend learning beyond our course.

• 3 major projects in which students selected a technology they wanted to learn to fulfill the assignment.

• Wanted to better assist students who have differing levels of technological ability.

Designing our Open Badge System

Mozilla’s Webmaker badges plan used the “constellation” concept in which smaller badges are earned and added together to receive a higher level badge.

A Look at Our Open Online Course

Support open education and open access (teaching an online course with materials already developed for our students, so why not share!)

Increase recognition of our badge “brand” by further enabling non-BYU students to earn our badges

Why an Open Online Course?

Uses a CC license that allows remixing and sharing

Free enrollment and assessment.

A Truly Open Course

• Same amount of BYU students enrolled

• Non-university students enrolled to earn badges but not university credit

• Limited numbers allowed for instructor (or TA)–learner interactions, such as in online discussions and specific feedback on assignments.

• More enrollments will eventually require more TAs

Limited but Increased Enrollment

General auto feedback

No multiple choice questions!

We also provided specific

feedback if warranted

Async Video Discussions

• Inservice teachers encouraged to enroll because course was free and they could earn badges

• The hope was that inservice teachers would interact with our students in discussions on how to integrate technologies in teaching. The result could rich collaboration beneficial to both parties.

• Few inservice teachers made it past the first week

Inservice Teachers

Looking Forward

Future Badge Design Iterations

• Design of strategy and integration level badges.

• Creating pathways for people to earn badges not in our classes, particularly inservice teachers.

• Scaling assessment.

• Maintaining accuracy of rubrics and tutorials as tools evolve and change.

• Creating a smart dashboard management tool for people to log in and track their progression on badges (ala Khan Academy).

Future Badge Research Considerations

• Student motivation. How many students will go above and beyond to earn badges? extra badges? Post-class badges?

• How useful can this be for teacher inservice professional development? Does it present a solution that will be useful to teachers?

• Principal/employer perceptions

Future Open Online Course Iterations

• Integrate more elements of the Open Online Course into the IPT EdTec website

• Offer the badges in conjunction with inservice teacher professional development credit.
