INTRODUCTION TO THE PARISIAN WASTE ISSUE

KEY FIGURES→ 1.09 million tonnes of waste generated in paris in 2017

→ 81.5% of parisian waste is not recycled

→ Paris is ranked in the last third of european cities in waste generation and recycling rates performance

STUDY PERIMETER: OUR APPROACH

TacklingDISPOSABLE CUPS

DISPOSABLE CUPS: ISSUE ASSESSMENT

SIZING

● 63 disposable cups

wasted/second

● 3 cups/day at work for

people in France

PROBLEM STATEMENT

● Huge impact for a

limited use

● By 2020, disposable

plastic cups will be

forbidden

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

● Environmental

benefits

● Social benefits

DISPOSABLE CUPS: ACTION PLANTARGETS

1. Coffee shops2. Workplaces and universities3. Big chains - Starbucks

CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME- Finding a sustainable business model- R&D for the reusable cup- Adapting to consumer behaviours

CREATING MOMENTUM- Commitment and engagement from

citizens- Call for artists every year- Creating a new symbol for Paris abroad

Disposable cups : BUSINESS MODEL

MAIRIE DE PARIS & private actor● They own and provide the

reusable cups - they are in

charge of connecting the

actors together

COFFEE SHOPS ● They are in charge of

collecting the deposit

from customers, taking

back the cups and

washing them

CITIZENS● Citizens get engaged by

making sure the system

works, giving back the

cups, voting for the next

design made by artists

→ The deposit secures the responsability of the cups through the whole chain - coffee shops

are incentivized to take care of the cups so they don’t lose the deposit, as do citizens !

Disposable cups : BENEFITS AND FIRST STEPSThe benefits are multiple :

- Better image for all the actors involved.

- Recycling and waste treatment costs are

reduced for the partners and for the

municipality.

- Citizens can be more sustainable without

having to think about bringing their own

cups

- The more the cups are used, the more

sustainable they become.

Implementing the first experimentation :- Targeting coffee shops

- 4e, 9e, 10e and 11e arrondissements

- 2500 Paris cups

TacklingCigarette butts

Cigarettes butts : Issue Assessment

SIZING

● Most discarded piece of

waste worldwide

● Represents more than one

1/3 of all visible liter

● 75% of smokers dispose

cigarettes on the ground

PROBLEM STATEMENT

● Discarding cigarettes is considered

socially acceptable

● Filters are not biodegradable , indeed

they are toxic waste, one cigarette could

pollute 500 liter of water

● The removal costs range from 3$

Millions to 16$ Millions for major cities

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

● Reduced pollution

● Costs savings for

municipalities

● Potential recycling or

recovery from butts

Cigarettes butts : solutions to implement (2) - lONDON

In 2015, in London the “Neat Streets” campaign promoted

by Hubbub connected with NUDGE theory. The project

consisted in putting ballot bins :

● Smokers can vote their favourite answer by putting

their cigarettes in the slots underneath their preferred

answer.

● The litter stacks up behind the clear glass front in two

columns, showing which answer is more popular

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubhUXqpiM50

● The immediate result was a 20 % reduction of

litter

● According to studies the bins could reduce the

litter up to 46%

● Was implemented also in Edimburgh adn

Manchester

Cigarettes butts : our solution

Our plan would be a trial period of 2 months in rue

oberkampf, with then the possibility to scale it up to the

entire 11th arrondissement later

Rue oberkampf 89-146: one of the most dense part of

paris

● Around 0,5 km and 30 between restaurants and

BARS

● 10 bins to be installed also with the participation

of bars

● Pilot project will cost around 3481€

https://ballotbin.co.uk/cart/

● Introducing also complementary long term

approaches: eg: distribute also free portable

ashtrays to smokers

Cigarettes butts: circular economy

● The filters contain plastic fiber, that can be recycled , while the organic part could be composted

● It is possible to create up to 1500 different products from butts

TacklingThe recycling issue of bottles and cans

Recycling bottles and cans: Issue Assessment

SIZING

● Of the 330,000 tons of cans

and plastic bottles used in

France every year, only 40%

are recycled

PROBLEM STATEMENT

● Systems asking consumers to pay a little

more for their packaging and then to

return to the same shop to give it back,

and receive a refund on its cost (The

practice was common from the

1960s-1990s) Has been abandoned in

the end of the 1990s

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

● The same bottle could be

reused as many as 50

times

● Saving energy and costs

Reverse Vending machine : The SolutionIn Germany:

● Implemented in 2003

● Supermarkets have a

reverse vending machine

which scans "Pfand"

returns and prints a

receipt for the total value

of the refund which can

be exchanged for cash

or put towards the cost

of future purchases.

Reverse Vending machine : The SolutionIn the USA:

● Reverse vending machines located throughout Some

cities

● “PepsiCo” and “Waste Management” have launched this

multi-year partnership in the U.S.

● Earn Reward Points (travel or movie tickets, or other

benefits, such as coupons for Pepsi products) or donate

cash to charities

● Benefits for: Community, Environment, FMCG Company,

Other participating companies (promotion tool), Public

budget

TacklingTakeout containers

Where do we stand?

Everytime we eat takeout food,

we receive:

The reusable takeout container

500 times washable

More resistant than classic takeout

Less impact on environment

Takeout containers: plan of action for Paris

They can open the special bin in their office and return the plastic container receiving a code to be

used for the next meal

The Municipality collects and washes

the boxes

Customers receive a card once they

subscribe to the program People buy food

from member vendors

Cleaned boxes are returned to the shops,

ready to be reused
