MAKING MODERN LIVING POSSIBLE

2-Pipe Steam• Concept

– 3 things inside the piping and radiation

• Air • Steam• Condensate

• Advantages– better control– faster heating– faster condensate recovery

• Disadvantages– more piping required– air and condensate removal– traps require maintenance

MAKING MODERN LIVING POSSIBLE

Temperature Control with Manual Valves, The Old Method

• 2-pipe steam, manual valve– line sized, only passing steam

The flow is controlled by adjusting the handle manually

Key Evidence on a 2-pipe Steam System

• Properly functioning

• Requires proper piping and pitch

Other 2-pipe Low Pressure Steam Systems

• 2-pipe Sub-atmospheric Control System

– Also known as Variable Vacuum System or High Differential Vacuum System

– Controllable vacuum on both supply and return side of system

– Varying steam temperature

• 2-pipe Orifice System

– Each radiator has a sized orifice, at the trap or supply valve

– Controlling the differential pressure across the orifice to meet heating requirement

– Properly sized orifices provide even distribution of steam

“Human race did not leave the stone age because we ran out of stones. We simply found a

better way to do things.”

What if you could control each radiator…automatically?

Take Control

Thermostatic Radiator Assembly (TRV)Provided Benefits

– Non-electric

– Self contained

– Self regulating

– Zoning capabilities

– Simple use of operation

– Potential fuel savings of more than 20%

How does the TRV do it?

• The thermostatic operator throttles the amount of steam that enters the radiator

How does a TRV work on a 2-pipe steam?

Manual Only• Steam enters the radiator and forces

the air through the steam trap

• Air leaves the radiator and the steam fills the radiator

• The radiator is now filled with steam and radiates heat into the room possibly overheating the room

Installed TRV Assembly• Steam enters the radiator and forces the

air through the steam trap

• The operator senses the increase in the ambient air temperature and closes the valve, preventing additional steam into the radiator

• The radiator is filled with an amount of steam meeting the set temperature on the TRV reducing overheating and saving fuel

TRV’s Reaction

• The thermostatic operator reacts to the heat gains and heat losses within the room

• Free heat gains within a room can originate from:– Solar gain

– Appliances

– Occupants within the room

• Therefore …
