1. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this manual is to provide the operator with the information necessary to safely operate the Runway Closure Marker (RCM). Sherwin Industries strongly recommends that personnel thoroughly familiarize themselves with the operation and maintenance information contained in this manual. 1.1 System Description The Sherwin Industries Inc. Runway Closure Marker is a self-contained, towed unit designed for heavy duty use in all weather conditions. The unit consists of a single axle trailer, an engine/generator group, a RCM assembly, and an electrical power distribution and control system. 1.2 Major Assemblies
1.2.1 Trailer The trailer is reinforced with steel tube construction to accept loads imposed by moving the unit. Connection to the towing vehicle is made by the tongue trailer hitch. The trailer has 4-ply tubeless tires on a single axle. Mounted on the trailer frame are the engine/generator, a 20 gallon auxiliary fuel tank, DC power unit, hydraulic enclosure, batteries, battery chargers, inverter, control box, and the RCM assembly. The RCM assembly is raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder with a working pressure of 2,500 psi. Four leveling jacks are distributed on the trailer to stabilize the unit while the RCM assembly is in the raised position. Four jacks at the corners are rigidly fixed to the trailer frame. The RCML893-G also comes standard with a fold-up tongue for ease of shipping and storage. The tongue should be tightly bolted in the down position while machine is in operation, or being prepped to be towed. 1.2.2 Battery/Inverter-Engine/Generator Group Electrical power is supplied by 2 D8 Batteries and a 600 watt power inverter. The gas generator is used only to charge the batteries. The engine/generator is mounted to the trailer frame towards the front and is centered. The generator should NEVER be used to run any other equipment. The engine is protected by a low oil pressure safety circuit. The fuel tank is mounted behind the engine/generator group on the rear of the frame.
