Resolve Kashmir as per political situation: UN panel head

ABID BASHIR

Srinagar, Apr 28: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is set to chair her maiden Uni-fied Headquarters (UHQ) meeting on May 10, just a day after darbar move offic-es open in summer capital Srinagar. The meeting will discuss crucial issues that include dealing with law and order situations, fol-lowing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), counter insurgency operations and also vacation of land under the use of forces.

“Chief Minister Meh-booba Mufti will chair the Unified Headquarters Meet-ing on May 10 in Srinagar. Deputy Chief Minister (Dr Nirmal Singh) will also attend the meeting,” an official document, avail-able with Greater Kashmir reads.

Sources said the Army top brass had requested the Chief Minister to con-vene a UHQ meeting in the wake of five civilian killings in Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kup-wara district recently.

Srinagar, Apr 28: While the J&K Food Control Orga-nization has swung into action following directions of the High Court and announced a crackdown on milk adulteration, it has however once again banked on inadequately equipped Food Safety Lab here for test-ing samples instead of ensuring fool-proof scrutiny of samples outside the State.

As the state health machinery embarked on the ‘spe-cial drive’ to check the menace of adulteration in milk and milk products, the exercise seems to be headed nowhere. The samples lifted during the drive have been sent for testing to the Food Testing Laboratory in Sri-nagar, a facility with poor infrastructure and manpower. The department, as per the officials, is ‘following the rules’ in doing so.

Two days back, the High Court in a PIL on Food Safety said it was ‘shaken’ by the statement made by food commissioner that there is ‘no paraphernalia avail-able in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the mandate contained in provisions of Jammu and Kashmir Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.’

Srinagar, Apr 28: Jammu and Kashmir’s diminishing forest cover is not only facing a threat from smugglers but also the Government itself. In a shocking revelation that government departments are vandalizing the forests, the State Forest Advisory Com-mittee headed by Chief Sec-retary has pointed out how they are causing colossal loss to the State’s precious wealth.

Official documents in pos-

session of Greater Kashmir reveal that FAC has taken strong note of government departments violating the terms and conditions of sanc-tions accorded to them for using forest land for devel-opment projects.

In its observations, the FAC has noted that govern-ment departments are caus-ing massive damages to the forests owing to unauthor-ized deposition of muck in the forest land.

India-Pak foreign secretary talks were informal: VK Singh

New Delhi, Apr 28: The talks between the foreign secretar-ies of India and Pakistan were merely a courtesy meeting - and not an "official dialogue" - where they discussed certain matters, Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh said on Thursday.

The minister, responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said: "I would first of all clarify that there was no official dialogue between our foreign secretary and Paki-stan's foreign secretary."

"The Pakistan foreign secretary was here to attend the Heart of Asia Conference and as an etiquette, there were some talks. But it should not be taken as official dialogue," he told the Rajya Sabha.

Hearing a Public Interest Liti-gation against food adulteration, a division bench comprising Jus-tice Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey also directed the owners of food processing units to file affidavits indicating that the food items they supply in the market are fit for human consumption.

While the bench directed the owners/MDs of food manufac-turing and processing units to file by next date of hearing affi-davits indicating as to how and in which manner they follow the provisions of the Act of 2006 and rules there under, they were also asked to provide informa-tion about the laboratories set up in their units, the equipment installed and the number of per-

Geelani calls for protests after Friday prayersSrinagar, Apr 28: Hur-riyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Gee-lani has called for peace-ful protest demonstra-tions on April 29 after Friday prayers against, what he said, contin-ued imprisonment of Handwara girl, govern-ment’s failure to arrest the troops involved in killing of five civilians in Handwara and Kup-wara, suspension of five employees and imposi-tion of restrictions on holding funeral prayers for JKLF co-founder Amanullah Khan.

‘Greater Kashmir inspired us’Srinagar: Pointing out that Greater Kashmir in its four successive editions published investigative reports on food adulteration that brought to surface startling facts, the High Court said: “These reports highlighted that on one hand there is non-implementation of the provisions of the Food Safety Act 2006 and the rules made there under as also non-availability of the fully equipped testing laboratories including the manpower required in terms of the afore said Act, and on the other hand the markets are being flooded with adulterated foods.”
