GK CITY REPORTER Srinagar, Oct 25: The Power Development Department, which has been allegedly infa- mous for re-metering of already metered areas of Srinagar in the past few years, must have spent millions on such deals, but the PDD has failed to improve transmission network even at places where disaster is feared anytime. Take the case of Dr Ali Jan Road, electric poles catering to high tension lines, are damaged for years and have bend to a “deadly angle.” But the PDD has not taken remedial measures. The scene is worst in some Soura colonies where transmission lines hang so low that, as per locals, a tall person is feared to touch the deadly lines. The transmission network in other areas is no different. A few weeks ago, the resi- dents of Pal Pora Sonawar had a narrow escape when the transmission lines col- lapsed. Though the poles and transmission lines are “decayed”, the PDD Babus haven’t bothered to revamp the network. The PDD says it is running short of financial resources to make revamps. But the civil society has been asking why did the Power Ministry prioritize re-metering of Srinagar by spending mil- lions on areas where meters had been installed just a few years back. The PDD continues to pre- tend slumber over such queries, while human life in Srinagar is at risk. Srinagar, Oct 25: A day after the J&K State Commission for Women pulled up the district adminis- tration over defunct streetlights, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Muhammad Sagar Friday directed the officials to ensure that lights are fully functional, “so that the people do not face any conve- nience especially during the late night and wee hours.” An official handout said the Minister was addressing officers during a review meeting con- vened to discuss the functioning of various street lighting system of Srinagar City. Power Develop- ment Commissioner, Asgar Ali, Commissioner, SMC, Srinagar, Dr GN Qasba, Chief Engineer PDD, Bashir Ahmed Khan, SE, Executive Engineer and other senior officers were present in the meeting. The Minister asked the SMC and PDD to work in “close coordi- nation to ensure that streetlights are fully functional, so that people living in various localities as well as commuters do not face any inconvenience.” Sagar said a “mechanism should be worked out so that both departments can synergise their efforts and ensure that the people get the requisite facilities and proper maintenance of the street lighting system of the City is ensured.” He also directed the officers to ensure the implementation of the decision taken in the District Development Board Meeting and the subsequent directions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for “transfer- ring an Electrical Sub Division from PDD to SMC, so that the proper look after and maintenance of the street lighting system is done.” He said “by doing so the Munici- pality would be augmented by the much needed human resource and other related things for proper maintenance and upkeep of streetlights and other things.” The Minister also asked the PDD officers to ensure that the people get adequate supply of power during the ensuing winter season. He said that the Chief Minister has already passed requisite directions to ensure that power supply is streamlined and consumers do not face any unnecessary cuts. The J&K State Commis- sion for Women Chairperson Shamim Firdous has already taken a serious note of the defunct streetlights linking it with “harassment of women”. A few days before Eid Ul Azha some women from Chana Pora, Batamaloo and other areas had complained of “harassment on the dark busy roads” during fes- tive shopping while many roads elsewhere too reel under dark- ness.
